Wild West haute route day 1 Attadale - Maol Buidhe bothy. 10:30 (first!) train from Achnashellach to Attadale then on foot into the hills. Heading first for Ben Killilan. Felt ok running out the track, though not pushing the pace, and pack felt a lot easier than last weekend. After crossing the Ling, headed on a lovely stalker’s path up towards the mountain. Two eagles circling overhead down quite low here. Path eventually disappeared and I made for the back of the coire to (hopefully) find a line through the crags. Was in the clag by now so hard to see, but the line I’d picked looked ok up a grassy reentrant, albeit steep. Summit easily achieved then some nav in the white room to get me to the col below Sguman Coinntich. Another steep wet scramble up mossy grass and rock but it was soon over. The rest of the day looked relatively straightforward after this! Next stop was Sron na Gaoithe & then Faochaig, bobbling along the ridge in the clag with occasional breaks to give a few views and glimmers of hope, but the sun never managed to break through. More careful nav to pick up the stalker’s path off Faochaig, disturbing a hare at close quarters, before a long descent to the col at Reidh Leum na Feithe. Then a long climb back up the other side onto Aonach Buidhe. A few deer watching me as I climbed & a couple of ptarmigan near the summit. Cloud had lifted a bit by now and I could see my target of Aonach Buidhe bothy from high in the hill, but needless to say it took a long time to descend and navigate the bog to reach it (8 hours total). Pleased to find the bothy empty and very plush having recently been done up. Two guys came in later but plenty space for everyone for a chill and comfy night.
Good day, even if the promised sunny spells never materialised!
