A good hash from Joneys Cross on Woodbury Common. Plenty of fast running, as well as some bits which kept us thinking. I ran well given the emotion attached to the hash........ Joneys Cross was the last place that Tom ever hashed - on Boxing Day 2012, on what turned out to be the last full day we spent physically together as a family of four, because Tom left for Leeds the following day. Because of that, I had all kinds of emotions in my head at times during the run.

A good Isca Hash from Uphams Plantation on Woodbury Common. Radiohead and I spent most of the trail trying to out-wit each other and the hares which was good fun. The first part of the trail was over the part of the Common that I was orienteering on when Tom died - so that was emotionally hard. But, having been back there now, its another box ticked. Towards the end of the hash we all stopped to watch the amazing bright red moon rise.

Brown Course. Felt tired from the start after the last couple of days on Penhale but, nevertheless, seemed to run fairly strongly. I flowed well though the controls, but was probably a bit lucky that the times when my mind drifted towards thoughts of Tom and Co were on bits where less concentration was required, so it didn't have any material impact on me finding controls.

I really enjoyed the course around what I think is a great forest - one that has a very much undeserved bad reputation.

Making the final check of the remaining controls at Penhale. I'd forgotten how tough Penhale is over that period of time..... especially when you're weighed down by a MASSIVE breakfast from a B & B!!! :-)

The dunes are in great shape, so its looking good for the event. Its just a shame that an 'organisation based somewhere in Derbyshire' has decided to ignore the event by not putting it in their national league.......what kind of national league is it that doesn't include a top quality event using one of the very best areas in the country?!?! The terrain at this years JK and BOC won't get remotely close to equalling Penhale and yet those events are in the national league! Of this years big events, only the Scottish 6 Days could be argued to be on terrain which is at least equal to Penhale. All very stupid, but not necessarily surprising!!

Anyway, rant over!......details of this years biggest event are at: http://www.cornwallorienteering.org.uk/southern_ch...

A good hash from Talaton laid by Freewheeler and Flash - Flash's 'virgin lay', so to speak! There were some good fast sections, as well as some nasty climbs. It was a really nice moon-lit night, so I didn't bother using my torch for some of the bits in open fields.

Cycling 10:00 [3]

Cycling from my house down to Huey's house for a long run on the coast.

Steady Run long 2:05:00 [3] 18.0 km (6:57 / km) +800m 5:41 / km

An epic long run from Huey's house with Huey and Check-up. We went up 49 steps onto Salcombe Hill then across the plateaux to the Britannia Stadium (aka the Donkey Sanctuary!). From there we dropped down to Weston Mouth and along the beach to Littlecombe Shute for the epic climb back up to the cliff top. Then back to Sidmouth along the coast path - though Weston Mouth and Salcombe Mouth. It was a glorious moon-lit night, and we only needed our torches for the wooded parts of the coast path.

I had quite a sad thought part way around the run - the last time I did that route with last summer with Tom and Chris Bell - both of whom, of course, were tragically killed in the Glen Coe avalanche.

Today its one month since Tom died. I was out doing site vists at work all day, but made sure I was in a scenic place on the coast for a few minutes reflection at 1348 - the exact time a month ago that I became an only child. RIP Tom.

shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 333 (2012)

CSC qualifier - Brown Course. It soon became obvious to me that my legs still aren't right, so I just decided to cruise around because there is no point breaking myself - it is amazing what an impact such a life changing event can have nearly a month on! Technically I was generally ok, although I did hesitate a few times when my mind drifted towards thoughts to Tom, Rachel and Co rather than the orienteering - so, each time that happened, I had to stop, re-focus, and sort myself out...I can only hope that this will get easier with time.

The map was a bit odd in places - especially the contours. For example, at number 4, there was a whole hill missing!....the map made it look like it would be on flat ground, and it was clearly on top of a steep spur coming off a hill! There was also a completely random bit of downhill on the path between 8 and 9, which should have been at least a form line! Then the last control was half way up a massive hill that's simply not on the map!!

Despite all of the above, it was great to run on a new area, and it was a nice spring day.

Result wise - not that that's remotely important really, I think I did reasonably. Although, if I was running properly, I'd like to think I'd have been a good few minutes faster.

Went down the beach for a bit coz its a lovely warm spring day. Then went back to my parents house to help with the grim task of sorting out some of Tom's stuff. Not nice and, at times, quite upsetting. The accident was four weeks ago today. RIP Tom - you are being sorely missed.

Hashing 50:00 [3] 9.0 km (5:33 / km)
shoes: More Mile Cheviot

Hashing from Wheathill Plantation on Woodbury Common. EJ laid the trail, and laid exactly the same route as he did for his City Of Exeter hash in November. That was good tonight because I was still feeling a bit shitty, and didn't want to push it so, once I'd worked out what was happening, I had a fairly easy job keeping at the front! Emotionally it was hard though, because the trail that EJ had copied was the hash we did the very last time Tom and Rachel visited East Devon together, back in November, before they died in Glen Coe. I kept on thinking of places where I'd seen them on the trail last time around - not nice, but it will make it easier next time I'm on that part of the common.

Steady Run 55:00 [3] 10.0 km (5:30 / km)

Decided to go to running club to see whether that would help stir my body back into feeling like doing anything again. It sort of worked because, despite feeling like shite for the first 15 minutes or so, I felt fairly reasonable after that. Although I didn't push hard coz I didn't want to take any chances.

Running Race race 1:45:00 [3] 17.0 km (6:11 / km) +750m 5:04 / km
shoes: More Mile Cheviot

The Four Trigs Fell Race. Well, in my case today, the Two Trigs Race! I felt pretty shite right from the word go because I'd woken up a bit 'coldy'. So I'd decided before the start that I wouldn't do it all. In the end, I went back down the valley from Buckton Hill. When I finished I was changed to the Two Trigs class, so I'll have ended up winning that.....not that anyone really takes any notice of the results in this race - its all about the comradery of the event and enjoying the countryside......and, of course, the pasty and cake at the end!! :-)

I'm not surprised I'm a bit coldy and leggy - everything thats happened over the last three weeks has taken so much out of me because its the most stressful thing I've ever experienced, and I've not been sleeping well at all. So I'm feeling a bit run down.

Laying the hash from The Knowle in Sidmouth. With everything that has been going on lately, I hadn't had time to plan the route properly. I found a few minutes to make up a general idea for a route shortly before leaving home, and then just let it evolve as I was laying!

(rest day)

Tom's funeral took place today.

The ceremony was nice - well, as nice as attending your brothers funeral can be. Seeing Tom arrive at the Crematorium and then walking into the chapel behind Tom's coffin were the hardest things I've ever done. The ceremony was a celebration of Tom's life, and it is a great tribute to him that there were about 200 people present. In addition to such a vast number of people at the actual ceremony, we know of at least another 50 or so who were watching the web-cast. Tom was so modest that he would have been slightly embarrassed by such an attendance.

It was a physically and emotionally draining day.

RIP Tom - you may be gone, but you will never be forgotten and your all too short life will influence your family and friends forever.

Warm up/down warm up/down 20:00 [3] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 333 (2012)

It was a nice sunny day, so we decided to take a break from arranging Toms' funeral, and went to a random Sarum event at Vernditch Chase.

My warm up was extended because, despite working ok when I registered, my Emit card had stopped working by the time I got to the start. So, I had to run back to registration to get a new card, before running back to the start again.

Just goes to back-up the theory that Emit is shit!! Its a very worrying thought that this years JK will be using such a shit system!

Orienteering race 30:07 [5] *** 5.2 km (5:48 / km) +120m 5:12 / km
spiked:15/17c shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 333 (2012)

Ran the green course because that was the longest one. Given that my mind wasn't totally on the job, because its two weeks today that Tom died, I ran ok. My only mistakes were where my mind starting thinking about what was happening to Tom and his friends almost exactly 2 weeks ago to the minute, which was, understandably, very distracting and quite upsetting. Despite that, it was still nice to have a break from making the funeral arrangements, and get out into a forest. Won by an embarrassingly large margin but, to be honest, orienteering results really don't seem at all important at the moment.
