(rest day)

Another nice summer day. I would have liked to go out for a run, but I'm not really feeling like it, having just got back from burying Toms ashes at the Crematorium. Its very much brought it all back into strong focus again. RIP Tom.

A really good hash from Four Firs on a nice warm summer evening, laid by Radiohead. The trail was crafty in places but, nevertheless, there was plenty of good chilled out running.

A really good running club session! I ran from my house to meet Joe from his Grandparents house on the way down to the sailing club for a normal running club session. But, rather than doing one of the 'normal' runs, Me, Joe, Justin, Tim and Jason decided to do our own run..... and it turned into a bit of an epic at a pretty fast pace!! We went straight up Peak Hill, and along the coast to Ladram Bay, then up to Stantyway Farm and back to Peak Hill on the inland route. Then we ran across Mutters Moor and back into town. Proper Job!! :-)

Back to normal northern weather today....bloody cold, windy and wet later! Felt yesterday in my legs right from the start of the first uphill leg (2-3), and then found the bit around the northern hill (which was as wet and shitty as I remember it being!) tough too. But, after that, I began to get moving again, and was pleased with my run. An enjoyable weekends orienteering.

The details had made us believe that this was going to be a pretty grim area, so I went out expecting something really shite. However, with the exception of one valley I had to go through early on, it really didn't seem that bad, and the final few controls were in a really nice bit of forest. So, although it may have been because I initially had such low expectations of the area, I actually quite enjoyed it!! Astonishingly, despite being being so far north, it was sunny for a second day!!

Black Course, M21L, Course 1....or whatever its called at a badge event these days!! (Not sure what a badge even is called these days either!!). The course was pretty good given that they'd had to re-plan it just a week before the event because some mysterious and rare creature that may or may not actually exist in real life had be found in part of the area. There was a tough section with lots of contouring on the side of a very steep slope, before a blast around the mixed open and forest bit. Generally, I was running pretty well, and only lost time on 16 where it was widely accepted that the map was odd at best, and on 25 when I was just a bit unlucky and didn't see the control hidden behind a bush.

Hashing from Blackborough. It was a good trail, laid by PDQ, around some terrain we don't use that often, so it made a nice change. There were some bits of good fast running as well as some slower bits when we were going up one of the many massive hills! Nice evening, and felt pretty good running! :-)

A nice run with running club from the Sailing Club......well, sort of with running club. Justin, Tim and I decided that the route we were being led on had too much road on it by the time we got to Harcombe (and everyone knows that road running is for light weights!), so we headed up into the hills from Harcombe. We climbed the long way up to the Donkey Sanctuary (Britannia Stadium?!) Then we went along the hill, and up and down the side a bit, to the coast path at the Frog Stone, before heading back to Sidmouth along the coast path. It was a glorious summer evening with more awesome views wherever you looked! :-)

A great run with running club from Salcombe Hill. I led the group through the Blue Bell Woods to the Coast Path. We then went along the coast path, through Salcombe Mouth, to Dunscombe. Then we did a loop around Dunscombe before coming part way back along the coast path, and the heading inland to go back to Salcombe Hill via the camp site and Mary Kings place. Loads of fantastic views on an awesome summer evening! :-)

Warm up stuff for a random Wessex event at Shillingstone. It was meant to be at Studland, which would have been much nicer, but a few weeks ago, someone remembered that there are ground nesting birds there.....and there goes the event, even if Joe Public can still go wherever he wants on the area!

Brown Course. Didn't really feel up for it right from the start, but I was going ok, with just a couple of minor misses, until number 10, which was only a short leg, that looked easy on paper..........but the control was hidden in amongst a load of brambles behind a rootstock. Loads of people were looking for it. I eventually stumbled upon it, more by luck than judgement, and found it for everyone. Really pissed off with that, it was a very poor control site, which let down what was otherwise a good course given the area the planner had to work with. Its certainly not somewhere I would ever want to plan, especially when, as happened just a week before the event, you're told that you can't use the best bit because someone's just discovered that The Greater Crested Nine Legged Newt, or some other creature, might be living in that bit of the forest!!

I found it really hard to focus today, especially once I'd been screwed by number 10. However, I think that was mainly to do with the fact that today is four months exactly since Tom was killed. Thats been in my mind all day, and for a couple of days before, and has really brought is loss back into sharp focus. Probably going to the Crematorium on Thursday to see Toms headstone (which had just arrived from Scotland), and arrange a date to bury his ashes, hasn't helped either. We all miss Tom so much. RIP Tom.

A good hash, laid by EJ, from Wheathill Plantation on Woodbury Common. Plenty of fast running because the three dots were a bit too soon after each check, but the long/short splits meant that everyone stayed largely together. Awesome summer evening with great views everywhere! :-) Felt a bit sluggish to start with, but was going well be the end.

A really nice running club from Otterton. We headed out of the village towards the coast. Then ran a section along the coast path before heading inland to Clamour Bridge, and onwards to East Budleigh. Then though some more paths to Bicton and back to Otterton. A really good run on a nice summer evening. Felt quite good given the battering I gave myself around Bullers Hill yesterday - though the run was at a fairly social pace.

Warm up stuff for a Devon event at Bullers Hill (part of Haldon Forest). Including the run to the start.

Trying to get myself really focused for the course because I knew concentration was going to be hard today, as the last time I was at Bullers Hill was with Tom on Christmas Day when we went mountain biking there. So lots of happy memories, but also loads of very sad thoughts going through my head. Determined to run well because of that - do it for Tom!!

RIP Tom.

Brown course. Bullers Hill is always a physical area, so I knew it was always going to feel like hard work today. Its also one of those areas where there are some bits which can catch out if you're not concentrating properly. So, given those factors, and everything I had going through my mind, I was really pleased with my run. I felt reasonably strong running and flowed well though the controls with no errors worthy of mention - maybe only 90 seconds at the most through a bit of hesitancy at a couple of controls which seemed a bit odd. Enjoyed the course! :-)

A really nice social run from White Cross with the running club. We went out to the trig point, then down into Harpford Woods. Then up to the Bowd and along footpaths to Core Hill. Then we did several loops around the many paths on Fire Beacon, and eventually made our way back to the cars. Justin and I were running comfortably together, and it was a good chance to catch up as we haven't run together for a while. Glorious warm summer evening, with stunning views off the hill! :-)

British Relays in the Mens Short for Sarum. Lucy Butt did an excellent job being a bloke on first leg and brought us back 9th. Harry then ran well on second leg and brought us up to 3rd. I then had the best run I've had in ages and made up a massive chunk of time on the team in 2nd, but didn't quite have enough course left to pass the guy in 1st, who finished just over 90 seconds ahead of us. Nevertheless, we were pleased with the result and, from a personal point of view, I was glad to have a run where I felt physically good and was technically sound (apart from a small wobble on 9 because it was hidden!), and I ended up winning my gaffle with a comfortable margin. Hopefully, this is a sign that I'm finally getting over the period of not training at all after Tom's death, and then running the Grizzly on the back of no special training!!

Running club session. I ended up leading the long run with about 30 seconds notice, so didn't have chance to think of anything in terms of a route. So, as it was a hot summer evening, we headed straight out of town of the coast path in an easterly direction. We went as far as Dunscombe, and then went to the Britannia Stadium (aka The Donkey Sanctuary) before heading back to Salcombe Hill on an inland route. Then we finished off with a fun charge down the coast path back in to Sidmouth.
