Steady Run 35:00 [3] 7.0 km (5:00 / km)
(sick) shoes: Montrail Badrock V2

Steady run from home around Harpford Woods. Felt ok - think I'm finally ready to un-click the ill button!! :-)

Felt much better this morning, although I still had to extricate some 'stuff' from my lungs after getting up, so decided that I wasn't going to risk anything. In any case, without any warning, some relatives we hardly see announced that they would be visiting today - so we went for a cracking walk with them from Stonebarrow Hill to the Golden Cap; amazing views on a glorious day! :-) As it was, I think I probably would have been ok to run but, in the circumstances, doing so would have been considered somewhat antisocial!

Will see how I feel tomorrow morning before deciding whether to do anything.

Body doesn't seem to have reacted too well to the last couple of days effort. Getting very pissed off with this cold now....it just won't quite f**k off! Though, speaking to a friend who is a GP, this seems to be fairly normal with this winters cold. Great!

spiked:26/26c (sick) shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 2014/15

Devon Christmas event at Parke.

Wasn't feeling too bad after yesterdays efforts, so decided to give this a go. Glad I did as it was really nice and I was breathing more easily than yesterday; although I was still 'clearing' a lot of stuff out while I was running, which confirmed that I'm still not 100%, but am slowly getting there. Somewhat pissed off with this now, as I've not been able to run properly since before the Compass Sport Final!

Enjoyed this event, which was an odds and evens score, on a cracking sunny day. Excellent mince pies and mulled wine at the end too!! :-)

Orienteering 35:00 [1] 3.5 km (10:00 / km)

spiked:21/21c (sick) shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 2014

I've been gradually able to breathe more easily without coughing over the last few days, so decided to give the QO Christmas event at Blackborough a go. After the usual chaos sorting the teams out, caused by people either not bothering to pre-enter, or pre-entering and not turning up, we eventually got under way. I was in a team with one of the QO juniors and a bloke who, only after he'd finished having not found any controls, told me that it was his first orienteering event!!

Initially, I wasn't able to run properly at all, as I started to cough again. This gradually eased as time went on. But to be safe, I didn't push it.

Overall, as is normally the case with this event, an enjoyable day out.

Steady Run 1:00:00 [3] 10.0 km (6:00 / km)
(sick) shoes: Montrail Badrock V2

Nice steady run on Woodbury Common with the running club. Really nice warm, almost summer like, weather! :-) Still not 100% in terms of breathing.

Hashing 50:00 [3] 8.0 km (6:15 / km)
(sick) shoes: More Mile Cheviot (Blue)-2014

Christmas hash from Newton Poppleford. A good run, felt OK running, but didn't push it. Massive pack of 65 people on the run!!

Steady Run 15:00 [2] 2.5 km (6:00 / km)
(sick)

Felt well enough to try a run to see how well my rehabilitation is going. Not as well as it felt when not running and, after a coughing fit (which, ironically, made me feel better!), I decided to cut my losses and head back. Will try again at the hash tomorrow, as its the Christmas Bash, so I can't miss that!!

Still giving the guy that brought this into work a very hard time!

Feel fine now after running; better than I felt before running in fact!

Note
(sick)

Coughed up some interesting stuff this morning, which seemed to suggest that, on the basis of previous experiences of such illness's, that I may well have just avoided a chest infection this time around. Feeling better after the coughing this morning, but definitely still not 100%. I'll see how I feel tomorrow evening before deciding about running club, but I'd imagine I'll feel ok to do a gentle jog to see whether I'm well enough to run properly again. Fingers crossed!

There is definitely no way I'd have completed the course on Sunday had it not been a team event, and I'm very glad I now have the experience to have kept my effort levels down to a maximum of 60% on Sunday. Hopefully, that has saved me this time; the next 36 hours or so will be crucial though.

Note
(sick)

Feeling a bit better than yesterday. Turns out that pretty much my whole office has been ill this weekend; except for the arsehole who came in with a really bad cold last Wednesday and refused to go home when told to by the team leader. Quite rightly, we gave him very hard time about it today. Twat!

I'm probably not helped by the fact that it seems to have been a long autumn to me, and I'm feeling pretty run down and tired anyway, and have been for the last 7 weeks or so if I'm honest. Fortunately, I break up for Christmas on Thursday, and don't go back to work until 5th January; which should give me enough time to re-charge my battery.

Orienteering warm up/down 20:00 [3] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)
(sick) shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 2014/15

Warm up for the CST final at Long Valley, including the warm up course - breathing really not feeling good.
12 PM

Orienteering race 1:16:15 [3] *** 13.5 km (5:39 / km) +90m 5:28 / km
spiked:29/29c (sick) shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 2014/15

CST final. My breathing was much worse than I'd anticipated even after the warm up; on the way to number one I was coughing so much that I made myself vomit, which wasn't great way to start. From then onwards, I knew there was no way that I was going to be able to run hard, so kept it at about 60% maximum effort all the way around - any more than that, and I just started coughing uncontrollably. Had it not been a team event, I'd probably have retired on the way to number 2 to be honest. Instead, I focused on getting all the controls right, which I did, although the area was pretty simple, so that was hardly a massive challenge. That said, the planner did a good job of making an easy area as hard as it could have been, though a few less bingo controls would have been nice.

It was as enjoyable as it could have been in the circumstances. Result wise, in my condition, I needed it to be a technical orienteering race, rather than basically a running race, so that, even going slower, I could benefit from others cock-ups. No chance of that today though! I think my breathing probably cost me about a minute per kilometre, so I'd have done pretty well under normal conditions for an area that really doesn't suit me at all.

On the plus side, when I finished my result moved Sarum up into second place overall (though the results on the internet say we were third, but we were announced as 2nd at the prize giving!??).

Steady Run 1:10:00 [3] 12.0 km (5:50 / km)
shoes: Montrail Badrock V2

A nice steady run with running club from Joneys Cross. I ended up leading most of the session, so I took as onto the parts of the Common that we're not able to hash on (but, somehow, its not a problem for "normal" runners to go there!!) to be a bit different.
11 AM

Stretching/Core Stability 15:00 [1]

A good social stretch.
5 PM

Orienteering 35:00 [2] 4.0 km (8:45 / km)
shoes: Hi Tec R154

East Devon training session. Just too some of the wee ones around the short urban course. Then back to the hall for free food! :-)

11 AM

Hashing 45:00 [4] 9.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: More Mile Cheviot (Blue)-2014

Hashing from The Bowd Inn. The trail was mainly around Harpford Woods; it wasn't especially long but, as with any run in Harpford Woods was pretty physical with plenty of steep climbs and descents.

7 PM

Steady Run 1:00:00 [3] 10.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Montrail Badrock V2

Tempo Run tempo 54:00 [3] 10.0 km (5:24 / km)
