run (road) 12:53 [1] 1.29 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Avia

Short run in the morning before packing to leave.

Sunday Jun 29, 2008 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Knowing that we are always tired after the convention, our flight back is tomorrow so we have today to rest and recover. Slept in, watched TV, and went to the movies to see WALL-E. I had a headache for most of the day so never got out for the run I had hoped to do.

Square dancing (rounds, plus) 1:40:00 [1]
shoes: Blair - Botany 500

NSDC, Wichita KS. Last class for the leadership course at 10:30 instead of 9:30 as on previous days so I slept in. Also had a workshop on cueing rounds at 3:30pm. Went to round dance teaches with Jan from 1 to 3:30. A single swing, waltz, quickstep, and the first part of a cha-cha before I had to leave. Only the quickstep went badly. Neither of us are proficient at it and their was not enough time for a proper teach. We stumbled through it and were glad when it was over. Back for normal rounds 8-10, then plus squares 10-11:30.

Friday Jun 27, 2008 #

Square dancing (plus) 1:20:00 [1]
shoes: Blair - Botany 500

NSDC Wichita KS. Classes all morning, then a visit to the vendors and lunch, and another seminar. No dancing until the evening. 7-11:30. Last 3 hours with Jan from yesterday. Found out she does rounds so made plans to do some round dancing with her tomorrow.

Square dancing (plus) 1:30:00 [1]
shoes: Blair - Botany 500

National Square Dance Convention, Wichita KS: Main convention starts today. Since Bev is not here I signed up for a lot of the education seminars and workshops in the mornings instead of dancing or going to the Round dance teaches as I usually do. Will get a club leader certificate if I complete 5 required and 2 electives. Also went to a callers workshop. Danced in the afternoon in the Plus hall with a variety of singles before meeting someone who looks like a good partner for the rest of the week. Danced with her again in the evening.
Dancing 1-4, 8-11:30.

National Square Dance Convention 6/25-28 Witchita KS

run (road) 12:32 [1] 1.25 mi (10:02 / mi)
shoes: Avia

Short run in the neighborhood near the Econolodge where we were staying. Very short because I needed a rest room almost as soon as I started.

Square dancing (plus, mainstream) 30:00 [1]
shoes: Blair - Botany 500

Trail End Dance. Spent the first hour or so with Io in the youth hall then went to the Solo hall. Bev is not here so I will have to find dance partners among the solos.

Note

Off to Wichita KS for Square Dance National Convention. Not taking the computer so likely there will be no updates until I return.

Square dancing (rounds, ms, plus) 30:00 [1]
shoes: Blair - Botany 500

Trail thru dance in Wichita KS with Iolanthe. 7:30-10. My directions (a map from the dance web site) had the location off by a few blocks and on the wrong side of a major highway so we were late. Missed 15 minutes of the early rounds.

Sunday Jun 22, 2008 #

walk (road) 16:00 [1] 0.6 mi (26:39 / mi)

Walk with Io around the new neighborhood. Had planned to go longer but it started raining before we started so we waited until later after it was dark. Still looked like it might rain more as there was a lot or lightening and thunder off in the distance. Cut the loop short and got back just before it rained again.

Saturday Jun 21, 2008 #

other (mowing) 30:00 [1]

Got a new electric lawn mower. Still have to push it but now the motor spins the blades instead of of me. Cut the back yard and most of the front before the battery ran out. Will finish the rest tomorrow. Did not keep track of time so just putting 30 min.

run race (dirt) 27:36 [3] 4.0 mi (6:54 / mi)
shoes: Saucony ? (racing)

DCRRC: Hugh Jascort 4mi, Fletchers Boathouse. 7pm. Out and back on the C&O canal towpath. Went out easy, then latched onto Bill, one of the competitors in my age group who I would like to beat but rarely do. Will him for about a mile, until much like last spring, my left calf tightened up. I slowed down and he did not. It did this the last two races of the spring series and I thought it was all better, but realize now that I have not had a road race since then, only orienteering. Did not get any worse and I managed to hold some kind of pace, but it is tough to race when you are afraid to go faster. Splits 13:40, 13:56

run warm up/down 13:30 [1] 1.3 mi (10:23 / mi)
shoes: Saucony ? (racing)

Warmup on towpath before the race. Not measured.

DCRRC: Bunion 1. Race After the Women 5k Blumont Park, VA 7pm

run race (road) 20:37 [4] 5.0 km (4:07 / km)
weight:178lbs shoes: Avia

DCRRC: Race after the Women. 5k. Bluemont Park VA. Course was changed due to flooding. Seemed short based on my time since I expected to do much worse but splits from mile markers suggest it was ok. 9:56 at the turn around. Calf tightened up just before the finish like it had in races back in March. Eased in and did not kick and feels ok today.

run warm up/down (road) 7:00 [1] 0.7 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Avia

Warmup on the bike path before the race.

Sunday Jun 15, 2008 #

other (mowing) 30:00 [3]

Went shopping for a lawn mower but did not find one I liked. Want an electric but without the cord. With no new mower and lots of tall grass, brought out the manual. Hard work but I got the front yard mostly done. Put 30 minutes, forgot how long I spent, but it was a lot more than 30 minutes.

Saturday Jun 14, 2008 #

Note

Nothing but work recently. 12-14 hour days on Thursday, Friday, and today.

Square dancing (double, octagon) 10:00 [1]
slept:4.0 shoes: Avia

Left work at 2pm to go to Capitol Squares practice. 2-4pm. Mostly a waste of time. 1/2 to drive there, 1/2 to drive back and danced less than 30 minutes. Back at work by 4:40pm.

Tuesday Jun 10, 2008 #

Note

Planned DCRRC race for today has been postponed until next monday due to severe heat and possibility of severe thunderstorm. Wonder if I will go running on my own.

slept:3.5 weight:174lbs

I am moved out now. Slept in the new house for the first time last night. Drove back to the apartment this morning to drop off the keys.

Now comes the second part. Moving things from the garage to the house and the winnowing of the stuff to a manageable level. Would be nice to reduce it by about half. Lots of things were packed 16 years ago and have gone untouched the entire time I lived in the apartment. Probable would not miss them.

Square dancing (rounds) 30:00 [1]
shoes: Avia

At Rounds by George. 7:30-9:30 pm.

Event: QOC Jug Bay

other (moving) 1:00:00 [1]
slept:4.0 weight:174lbs

Another full day of moving. The last of the stuff. Also a lot of trips to the dumpster to get of things that will not be making the move. Io arrived at the new house and brought a car load of stuff that there is no room for. We went back to the apartment to do the vacuuming, carpets and cleaning. When she said she would help with the moving, I am sure this is not what she had in mind.

Note

Hated missing the Beer Chase today. Seemed like perfect weather for it. Because of the move and my lack of planning, I had to miss West Point, Team Trials, Meadowood, and now Jug Bay.

other (road) 40:26 [1] 4.0 mi (10:07 / mi)
slept:2.0 weight:175lbs shoes: Avia

Run back from returning the van. Very hot again. This time I was wise enough to run on the shadier side of the street.

other (moving) 1:00:00 [1]

Full day of packing and moving. The last load of the van loaded in the morning, plus some trips by car. Finally looking like I have reduced the stuff left to a small enough mass that it does not multiply any more. The end is in sight. Unfortunately; it does not look like it will be soon enough for me to go the QOC Beer Chase. I still have to clean the whole apartment and do the rugs and should not do it at night because of the nose level. Also, Io arrives tomorrow for the summer. She is excited about the new house, but will be less so when she finds out that very little has actually been unpacked. Her bed and desk are among the things that have not been reassembled yet.

run (road) 41:14 [1] 4.0 mi (10:19 / mi)
slept:2.0 weight:176lbs shoes: Saucony Grid Shadow

Even with the major move last week, there is still more stuff left than I can easily transport in my car so I rented a UHaul cargo van. Run from apartment to Vienna via Lee Highway and Gallows road to pick it up. 9:30 in the morning and already oppressively hot. Tired from packing and carrying all week and little sleep last night so very slow.

There is a little park on Gallows road and even though I have lived a few miles away for nearly 16 years, I have never visited it. Today I did as I saw a porta-john in the parking area as I went by and I needed a break. All I saw was a parking lot, paved trail leading to a playground and some woods. Did not explore any more, as I had to get moving to pick up the van.

other (moving) 1:00:00 [1]

Took off work for a full day of packing and moving. One of the things I liked about this apartment when I moved here was it had lots of storage space. As I move, I can see this is not always a good thing. Way to much stuff and no matter how much I move, there always seems to be more. Probably should have gotten a small truck instead of the van since I ended up making 3 trips. Milage cost on the trucks was higher though ($8 per round trip). 10ft truck would still have needed two trips and the total would have been about $5. 14ft truck could probably have done in in one trip and saved $6 but I would have had to load everything at once. Would have saved even more in time and gas cost.
Any way I lost track of how many trips from the apartment to the van so will just estimate at 30 per load. Most were not nearly as strenuous as loading the car had been since I carried less stuff and was parked a lot closer.

Thursday Jun 5, 2008 #

other (moving) 8:00 [2]

Really packed the car this time. Time is small because I did a lot of it last night so added it into yesterdays entry.
Power still off in the new house this morning. It was off yesterday afternoon when I unloaded and has not come back yet. The tree hanging in the power lines and blocking Lee Chapel Road might have something to do with it.

Wednesday Jun 4, 2008 #

other (moving) 13:00 [2]

Mostly Iolanthe's bunk bed which I disassembled last night.

other (bailing) 25:00 [1]

Square dancing was canceled tonight because the storm in the afternoon knocked out power where we dance. Worked late instead and then home and bailed the water out of the back porch. Won't miss that when I complete the move.

Was planning on some ups but figure the bailing was a good substitute.

Tuesday Jun 3, 2008 #

other (moving) 9:00 [1]
weight:177lbs shoes: Blair - Botany 500

More stuff. Mostly odds and ends, the stereo, and my living room chair.

Square dancing (dbd, rounds) 20:00 [1]
weight:177lbs shoes: Blair - Botany 500

At Dixie Stars. 8-10pm. Last dance for our rounds cuer who is moving to Richmond. Special party to honor him. Unfortunately there was a big accident on I66 and traffic was backed up. People filtered in between 8 and 9:50. He was in the group that arrived at 9:50.

Monday Jun 2, 2008 #

other (moving) 9:00 [1]
(sick) shoes: Blair - Botany 500

Started in on the remaining stuff. Bad headache today as I pay the price for drinking a lot of caffeine friday and saturday.

calisthenics (ups) 1:15 [2]

Now that I have clear floor space in my apartment again, I can get back to some exerciseing. 25 pushup, 25 situp, 25 back. Should not have mattered since I have lots of floor space in the new house and that was where I did these anyway.

Sunday Jun 1, 2008 #

other (moving) 30:00 [2]
slept:2.0 weight:178lbs

Actual moving day. Rented a truck and had Ted and a friend Paul come over to help me move the larger stuff. Seemed like I had moved a lot of stuff on my own until now, when it seemed like I had hardly done any work. About 6 hours including the 20 minute drive to the new house. I did not keep track of how many loads I took so just put 30 minutes. Ted and Paul did most of the work anyway, while I was inside getting stuff ready.

Today I wore my old Saucony Hurricanes. So old the were never on my attackpoint shoe list. Not going to mess up a good pair of shoes.

walk 25:00 [1] 1.5 mi (16:40 / mi)

Walk home from Gallows Road / Merrifield after returning the rental truck. Probably should have kept it and made one more trip. Just throw all the lose stuff in and then pile it in the garage at the new house. Stuff moved earlier was stacked in the garage, not piled. But I was tired of moving and did not the idea of paying another $20 (0.84 per mile).

Looking back now I was foolish. I still have to deal with all the stuff left and a big pile in the garage is no harder than piles in the living room and closets. Plus I have to stuff it all into my car and make lots of trips which will take even more time and probably cost more than the $20 I did not spend earlier. May have to rent a van next saturday anyway to get the last of the stuff over.
