Note

Gord and I were discussing this at the Kemps' meet this past Tuesday. Wouldn't Saunders Farm make a super interesting sprint area?

I biked out to physio early this afternoon for a 13:00 appointment about my ankle and Brian (my athletic therapist) had another look at my missaligned body and gave me a bunch of larger heal lifts to put in all my left shoes to straighten me out. He also had me book an appointment to see the resident podiatrist, Sean, who would probably make me some proper lifts for me left. According to someone who made me terrible custom orthotics a year or two ago my left leg is 11 mm shorter than my right... not cool - it's been causing me some major problems.

I then biked to Carleton to drop something off with regards to the COCs and then home to help stuff race kits. All in all a good day.

I bike out to Britannia this evening for Emily and Eric's O-meet but didn't run it because of my ankle though it did look like a lot of fun! I took pictures instead :)

Then on the way home I very nearly got myself killed. Here's the harrowing story as I told it to Alison. I was about to put it into attackpoint when the adrenaline finally wore off and it hit me just how close I was to being hospitalized or dead and I had to step away from the computer and do something - anything to get my mind off the near miss. Anyway, here it is:

I was biking down a hill on a fairly busy road and coming up to an intersection where I had a green light to go through. There were two cars in the oncoming left turn lane. The first guy pulls out and turns left which is fine - he had lots of room. I assume the second guy is going to see me coming and not pull into the intersection but I was wrong :( As soon as I see him pull out I know there's going to be trouble so I slam on the brakes. I don't know what speed I was going but it was pretty quick and as I was pulling up to him I started fishtailing. I was about a foot from broadsiding the car. Had I not being as quick as I was on the brakes he would have broadsided me - and I would have - at minimum - been in a wheelchair for a long time.

I was furious because during this whole thing he didn't look at the oncoming lane even once as far as I could tell. He didn't slow down or try to brake or avoid me or anything. It was as if I didn't exist. I really wish I had had a headcam on to video the whole thing to review / catch his license plate number (not that that would have done anything really).
