Parts of this felt really good (granted, the orienteering was really easy) and I was moving amazingly well given the 6 hour adventure run the day before but then I made two massive blunders by taking risks I couldn't afford to take on an old map like this. Lost ~12 minutes over those two controls. Should have simplified and taken extra safe routes rather than trying something and then getting caught in no-man's land.

An awesome Run the Wild with Patrick. Thanks Nicki and team!

I started out a bit fast and Patrick had to pull us back a bit but after an hour or so we finally settled into a good groove and in the end worked quite well as a team.

The course started with a 4km trail run broken up with a surprise memory-o which we blew past because the organizers weren't in place yet. Oops! Got sent back 50m down the trail to the memory-o and lost our little lead but made it around the memory-o with a bit of luck. We were supposed to find objects along the way but after seeing the first one right at the first control we didn't look off the route and so missed all the other objects. Thankfully Jen happened to ask us about that first one...

Back on course to the end of the trail run in the lead and got to the start of the next section just as they were setting up. Patrick led us through the three technical orienteering loops with me following along and getting ahead of myself a couple of times. Made it through the loops with no real problems and then up to the top of one of the big hills to get the Rogaine map with the rest of the course.

Took about 10 minutes to draw a route that would collect everything and then off on course with just under 4.5 hours to go. The first section was easy and I had the orienteering map (each team got a large 1:15 000 orienteering map and a 1:20 000 rogaine style map). Then things got hillier and trickier for the middle section. Nailed one control smack in the centre of the circle but... no flag... we spent about 10 minutes searching around before giving up. Only after the race did we find out that the circle is positioned differently on the two different maps and that the flag was correct for the 1:20 map. That would explain why Patrick was thinking it was further off to the east than I did. The next checkpoint we went too also had a slightly misplaced flag so we almost gave up on that one too but we did find it after a minute of searching.

Ended up not quite being able to clear the course. We had to drop a 10 pointer and a 20 pointer near the end and run hard for the last control to get back in time (only to find out we had 5 minutes more than we thought we did). So in total we were 100 points down (the one we couldn't find was 70 points) but we still managed to take the win. I gather this was the first time no one was able to clear a Run the Wild course so kudos to the organizers for the perfect race length! It was a ton of fun!
