Goldmining! I love goldmining terrain. However, my lack of practice orienteering (I have been off for over a year due to injury) and lack of fitness really showed in this technical area.
I stuffed up number 4 which I thought was behind a high point, but when I looked it wasn't there, so I ran around checking the other nearby highpoints and scratching my head before realising it was behind a 'knoll' which the first high point was on top of. I don't think I was the only person to do this.
Kate R caught me a couple of controls later and with Hania we ran together taking turns to lead into controls until I lost them on the vague downhill leg to 18. I really stuffed 18 (4-5 min), mistaking a minor creek for a major erosion on the map and searching south along the creek instead of north. Then I was tired and also messed up 19 (2 min) by not orienting my map properly and running off the wrong corner of a clearing.
One thing I did notice this weekend - although I did still make too many mistakes, I recovered from most of them and the worst were 10 min. A couple of years ago it wouldn't have been unlike me to make a 20 or 30 min error, so I guess that's progress. :)
