Adventure Race 5:30:57 [3] 56.25 km (5:53 / km)
Team Jackass decided to put the marriage on the line today in name of a fun day of adventure racing. Was always planned to be fairly leisurely but one silly mistake made it an epic.
Took a hilly but accurate route on the aerial photo stage and spiked 6 controls and came in. Got abused by a race director for not have a clear understanding of the "turn left at the kayak" instruction which, from the angle we approached it, sent us down the gully. When I saw Tooms and co on the hill we headed for them as 3 other teams made a beeline for the bikes and thus avoided the bog slog.
Had a nice ride through to TA 2 with no dramas here. Decided there to just pick up the required 7 CP's and to my surprise we did this really well. Seems the slower riding allowed me to nav cleanly. 11, 13 (via overgrown track), 2, 12, 3, 9, 6.
Single track through to TA 3 was slow and we got off course a little somewhere at the start before meeting Juffy on the right track. Cass struggled with the single track so we stopped to let anyone and everyone past but hey we were having fun still at this point!
Breezed through the brewery challenge at TA 3 and we were surprised to find we had overtaken Dolf and Liz somewhere who had left TA1 15 mins ahead of us. As we left TA 3 they were just coming in. Then it all went to s&%t with one monumental stuff up from me. Is was looking for the fork up to TA4 and got confused with the scale and somehow we flew past the right hand turn. What made it worse was it was a huge descent after the turn off which we flew down. A few minutes later I started to get that 'oh shit' sort of feeling in the stomach but the map still matched so we plodded on. Eventually hit Fergurson road which was off the map and realised our mistake. Found a tourist info board and planned a route to get us back up near MB 5 and realised our race was over. Cass was pretty tired by now (her longest training session had been a 50min run) so it didn't help when our planned route eventually hit a 'Danger no entry Mine Site' sign. Again we backtracked out and found another way across.
Fortunately for us Dad had seen us turn down Ferguson road as he drove the kids out to Gnomesville. My pigheadedness had kept us riding away despite his protests, so lucky for us he had been worried enough to come looking for us. He found us half way back to MB 5 and Cass was happy to take a ride in the front seat. No room in the car for me too so I rode back into the finish via Henty road and Lennard Road.
Lots of riding in this race which didn't help for Cass but a great weekend away anyway and I got to check out more area than expected in prep for espresso.
Great effort by Cass as she never complained once despite my stuff up and the race was a success as we are still married!
Shame we weren't able to hang around for the presentations as we apparently won a weekends accommodation at Evedon park.... bugger!
