Every time Ash Nesbit organises a race the wind goes to shit. This was no exception. This was the 40km Freo to Mindarie relay and conditions for the first half were 13 knot or so ENE. Ha ha.
I did the 4th leg and by then we had a screaming southerly of . . . 6 knots! The boat wash was about the only thing that stopped me falling off my ski in abject boredom.
Well, that and the bet that the girls would come in less than 15min after Tooms and Danger. The girls got a 10min head start so that meant that Tooms would have to beat me by five minutes to win.
I started ahead of him cos Karen came in ahead of Danger on the third leg, but I had no idea how far ahead she was so I pushed hard. About half way thru I glance back and there is Tooms so I pushed harder. Couldn't keep that up forever and eventually he pulled up next to me complaining about how much his shoulders hurt and how he was having trouble staying in the boat and how tired he was.
Apparently not too tired to cruise past me tho. The bugger. Then I got annoyed about that and really put the hammer down, I wasn't going to let the girls down and get beaten by five minutes!
I think Tooms came in 2min in front of me, victory for the girls. However with the 38 degree temps we were really all just hot and tired so the victory dance was, well, absent completely. We weren't DFL but probably not by much!
Never doing an Ash Nesbit race again!
