Event: City to Surf

bike ride (Camel Farm) 1:07:29 [3] 14.03 km (4:49 / km)
shoes: Rocket

This was better than City to Surf, I'm sure. Each time I go I get a little bit less-worse, today I even managed a few km at sub-5:00! And I was keeping up with Anne much better, and catching her on the uphills.

bike ride (to/from gym) 10:00 [3] 2.5 km (4:00 / km)
shoes: Rocket

swimming 32:00 [3] 1.0 km (32:00 / km)

I was determined to stay in that damn pool until I swam 1km.

300m warm up
300m pull buoy
50m x 4 sprint-like things
200m cool down

paddle (downwind - really!) 42:53 [3] 7.22 km (5:56 / km)
shoes: Swordfish

Karen and I were expecting to float up towards Cott and back on a flat, calm ocean - but the seabreeze was in just enough to make it downwindable!

Good fun but hard work to catch and stay on the waves - I think I managed to catch four waves that allowed me to stop paddling and catch my breath.

Can't complain tho- it's still officially winter!!

Note

Foot update - hurts again :( Not nearly as bad as last week, but pushing my toes down causes pain, and the top of the foot is stiff and achy. I'll stay off it today and get the final prognosis tomorrow!

bike ride 10:00 [3] 2.5 km (4:00 / km)
shoes: Rocket

paddle (H Island) 1:24:43 [3] 13.54 km (6:15 / km)
shoes: Swordfish

I was a bit concerned about getting my foot wet and letting bacteria in through my chunk of missing skin, so I used one of my collection of RPH puke bags to cover the wound. Should have used more tape, it didn't hold . . .

And on the theme of 'things that didn't quite work', Karl's cabling job on the SF didn't hold either and by 6km in it was difficult to get the boat to go straight. By the time I got back to the Narrows it was downright painful on my foot so I pulled in there and tightened the cable ALL BY MYSELF!!! I didn't quite make it back to UWA before the knot slipped again.

However, I managed to get under 1:25 for the first time in ages!

learning to run (testing) 23:11 [3] 3.43 km (6:46 / km)

On Monday I was told I had a stress fracture and would need three months off running - which sounded a bit extreme considering a sawed-through sternum was only 12 weeks to heal. So I headed up the freeway to see the highly-recommended Steve.

I was resigned to needing at least six weeks off, but after a look at the x-rays and a poke at my foot he actually asked if I wanted to run this weekend!!! In about the space of 30 seconds I went from six weeks rest to potentially being able to do the Race of Near Death. Woohoo!

Steve put all the tape he had on my foot (looked like it, anyway) and told me to try running tonight. I stood up and couldn't really move due to the 1kg of tape, so he loosened it a bit and off I went. However by the time I got home it had tightened up and I couldn't walk - so I took the scissors to this amazing tape job and cut through the back so that my foot could move a bit.

I was nervous about the first running step but it didn't hurt! And it remained fine until about 2.5km when something of uncertain location was feeling sore. I made it another km and was limping - turns out the tape has rubbed a 10 cent coin size piece of skin off my foot. No doubt my fault for my impromptu alterations . . . .

But the good news is, I'm pretty sure I can get through C2S with this and a liberal application of nurofen - although I'll see how it feels in the morning.

Ice time!!! And thanks Steve :-) And Tooms and Juffy for the recommendation!

My podiatrist is at a different clinic on Mondays so he wrote down his address as '339 Cambridge' and told me it was really close to the Subi train station. Well, it wasn't. And when I got there, there was no podiatrist.

So I rang and was told he's actually at 202 Cambridge, which is indeed close to the Subi train station.

And with a stress fracture I'm not supposed to be walking much . . . .

bike ride (to/from work) 10:00 [3] 2.5 km (4:00 / km)
shoes: Rocket

paddle (ladders) 37:29 [3] 5.94 km (6:19 / km)
shoes: Swordfish

Got almost done our 1.5km warmup and a man on the bank started waving and yelling what sounded like 'shark 400m ahead' so we paddled over to him and he said there was a shark 400m ahead, he knew what dolphins looked like and this was definitely a shark. Uh-huh. We then saw numerous dolphins so we figured he hadn't seen a shark, but how nice of him to pull over and alert us about the dangerous predator.

I had planned on 4 x ladders but halfway through the third my foot was hurting so I stopped there. Happy with the effort and it wasn't freezing which was nice!!
