Trek 10:08:00 [3] 34.0 km (17:53 / km)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia 3 (Blue/Black)
A little walk with Joel and a full pack to break in some new shoes. Oh, and in case people are trawling for newsletter fodder: "Rogaining is stupid"
We planned about 40kms measured very roughly and quickly via the traditional “pick the biggest hills on the map and link them up” technique. Since we could see one of the largest from where we were sitting it was obvious it wasn’t going to be a very big climb. 5m contours made them seem large at least.
We started out with Janet and Robin and I am hoping that the speed difference was due to pack size otherwise Joel and I are in for some very painful trek legs in NZ. We were notably slower than the other two, even when Robin didn’t look like he was striding out. I came up with lots of excuses at least though I might need a few more before race day.
We abandoned them at the third CP and struck out our own way, and I promptly got zapped by the next fence we came too. Joel didn’t laugh too loudly and it was the only zap either of us got all night which I thought was good going, we were taking our time at the fences to make sure we didn’t though. I was glad I had my walking poles for some crossings as the extra balancing stick came in handy. So did being tall.
It was good to get back to reading a map after a long break, nav was pretty easy for the most part with only a couple of minor errors when we were contouring around hills and taking interesting approach lines. We got fairly lazy on some of them since it was a case of walk in the general direction until you see it for some CP’s. Guessing which tree the CP was hanging on from over a km away helped ease the boredom.
Around 4am we decided we had enough and planned a route that got us back to the HH just in time for it opening at 6am. Best planning we did all night.
