Ski orienteering 27:42 [3]

Ski-o at Grafton Pond. Middle distance. Different from yesterday with more skiing and less complex orienteering. A couple of controls on small dotted trails, but there was so little snow that it was easy to cut in to them from the bigger trails. More flow in the navigation (could even read the map some while skiing) and no error that I can recall. Very glad that I used my very old rock skis since there was a lot of rocks and bare spots. The skis worked fine, by the way, in spite of their age (I got them when I was about 18 or 20 and had a ski contract with Kastle). Didn't get to do any skiing after my race since Mark was in a grumbly mood and wanted to go home without even doing his race. The weather was crummy at that time with a mix of cold rain and strong wind so I can sort of understand him. He also tends to be frustrated by too much time with the kids on his own, especially when they don't behave, which they certainly didn't do for long stretches this weekend (we have probably convinced all the CSUers that stayed at Ed's place never to have kids) so he wanted straight back home to watch football. Wouldn't have been my first choice, but at least we have another ski trip planned in a couple of weeks to look forward to.

Ski orienteering 18:49 [3]

WRE at Ken Walker's ski area. Fun to see the ski-o crowd and a lot of fun to do the race. My map reading was rusty and the course complex or even confusing with a lot of controls in a small area so I was not able to read the map while skiing and had to do a lot of map reading stops. Only did a vey minor error where I started off on the wrong trail, but realized it very quickly. Never got any flow in my skiing, but had fun with the frequent turns and twists. And best of all, I got some 300 WRE points! Not sure what I can do with them, though...

XC Skiing (Skating) 30:00 [3]

Some skiing after the race.

XC Skiing (Skating) 30:00 [3]

Played with the kids in the snow while Mark was racing. Towed them in the sled (Tor just loves the downhills) and did some sledding in a small slope. The kids were lazy, though, and wanted me to retrieve the sled for them and carry it up so we had some arguments.

Note

Registered for the coming ski-O in F21 red (Brendan talked me into it). I hope it won't be too embarrassing. I tried to recall my last "real" competitive ski-O and it must have been during my first year in med school around 1989-1990. Quite a while ago. There was no snow what so ever in Stockholm that winter and I remember being away from home every weekend but two from Nov to March (and then orienteering season kicked in). Lots of studying in the airport trying to catch cheap stand-by tickets up north as well as taking the night train north. And lots of roller skiing. I never regretted giving up skiing after that winter, focusing instead on regular orienteering.

Orienteering 50:00 [3]
shoes: Sarva

CSU one-man-relay night-O at Hammond Pond set by Anna. A thin layer of wet snow, not enough to make running tough, but rather slippery (I used shoes without metal studs) so I took it slow. The good thing with the snow was that it made everything bright and light. Orienteering went well, only had trouble with one control up on the hill north of the parking lot. In contrast, running was not so much fun. Left hip adductor hurt and right achilles was slightly unhappy. Plus that I am so slow and not able to keep any speed uphill or through vegetation. Feeling old and out of shape. Blah. Fun training, though, and a clever way to use a small area.

At the gym. Cycling, arc trainer, efx, treadmill and erg. 12 min running, 10 min each for the rest. Achilles definitively not happy so tried to stretch properly and will take NSAIDs tonight.
