XC Skiing (Classic) 1:00:00 [3]

Had a morning appointment for Covid tests for the whole family and continued on to Great Brook Farm directly after. Nice to be there early before it would become too crowded. We had some discussion around whether skiing at GBF would be consistent with the socially distanced outdoor exercise that the Vermont travel restrictions allow, but decided that we have a season pass so no need to queue for a ski pass and once in the woods it should be fine. Got a phone call from Craftsbury while skiing asking if we have been quarantining and the status of our Covid tests so they definitively take it seriously :) We have too and have been home all week except for the skiing so I feel good about going.

XC Skiing (Skating) 45:00 [3]

Did a first loop on classic skis with Tor who was on fire and sprinted up every hill in max speed, but who needed to stop to catch his breath every so often so it turned into an interval work-out more than anything else. Dropped Tor at the car when he got tired and switched to skate skis and enjoyed a more relaxed pace for a second loop.

Running (Trails) 15:00 [3]

Felt almost completely recovered from my shot so decided to go for an easy test run to see if my Achilles would hold up (it has been almost completely fine the last couple of days). I probably should have run on pavement instead of trails as the slipperiness of hard-packed snow on trails was still a little aggravating so I kept the run short and added some walking to get my outdoor time in.

Note

Tired this afternoon with a low grade fever (around 100.5F) and a mild headache. Likely side effects of the COVID vaccine. Have a test booked already on Sat for our vacation next week, but feel fairly certain it is not COVID. Sent Mark off with the kids for ski practice (which they couldn't participate in as we are quarantining so they did socially distanced skiing by themselves) and crawled in bed with a book.

Note

Got my second COVID shot (Moderna). Benefit from working at a major hospital, but comes with the price of potentially being redeployed to work at COVID wards or wherever else the hospital may need extra hands during pandemic surges. It doesn't look likely currently, but almost half of our center were redeployed during the first surge last spring.

XC Skiing (Classic) 1:15:00 [3]

Another great day of skiing at Weston with a headlamp and doing all the loops. Had the company of both the kiddos today. I don't think Weston had groomed after the new snow yesterday, which was a little disappointing as conditions could have been fantastic and were just OK now. Spotted a raccoon halfway through that got paralyzed by our lights.

Strength 20:00 [3]

10 min Easy Abs Workout plus one set of my PT exercises. Have been neglecting them for a while. Also some very much needed stretching. Achilles is tight and borderline aching, but not alarmingly so. Thought it prudent to take a day off (also didn't manage to get a reservation at Weston today :)

Walking 20:00 [3]

Quick lunch walk through the snow to membership beach and back to enjoy the gorgeous weather and the bright sun before an all afternoon zoom conference.

XC Skiing (Classic) 1:10:00 [3]

Perhaps not the best for my Achilles (no sharp pain today, but a low grade dull ache), but oh-so-fun! About as good as skiing can get in Boston! -8C, crisp clear air (and few enough people that I could skip the mask most of the time), fresh cold snow, and recent grooming. Used my headlamp and did all the loops at Weston with Lukas. Tried my new skins and they were great! Quite an upgrade compared to Mark's fish scales, although I could easily have waxed my regular skis today.
