Running warm up/down 20:00 [3] 1.5 km (13:20 / km)
shoes: olway tigers

Jog with dad in the field and then on my own to the start. Did drills and a few efforts.

Jog with Dad after.

Orienteering race 1:24:00 [4] 6.7 km (12:32 / km)
shoes: olway tigers

First control was very tricky. After yesterday afternoon was determined to have an attack point for each control so picked one for the first. Got the attack point and saw what I thought was the "depression" but no flag so headed to the next hill. Think I actually had seen the re-entrant further down and the control had been behind me. Relocated and went back the way I came and met people coming out the control. Ran too hard to two trying to catch up the group....stupid! Was a bit iffy and was two far left like most people I have spoken to, relocated ran past the control as head not up but then saw it. Not a good start. Got 3-5 fineish (slight overshot at 4). Looking at it now, my splits to these as all faster than dad's which is silly as he can run faster than me. I was going too fast. 6 disaster. Started ok but hit this crag, forgetting the scale I assumed I'd got my direction wrong so carried up the hill. However that crag was actually my attack point which had come quicker than I had expected. I kept going though and felt too close to the open which seemed silly since I had thought I was too far right. Saw a ride to knew where I was and came off it to my control. No control, went higher still none. Went along the ride and then realised I was on a parallel ride higher up. Went down with no plan and missed the control. Eventually stopped and got it. Headed up the hill to 7 saw come green and went through it but no boulder so went to the next and next. NO plan, no compass just all running and angry running. Tried to relocate but all looked the same and then got myself to the top of the hill and the cairn and then found the control. Saw dad coming towards me who started 20mins behind!

And so he reminded me it was difficult and that I should treat the rest as training. I let myself get into a state and got a pull to 8. After than though I got back into it. I learned to actually use the map and have an attack point. I felt like I was cruising though but from 8-finish out of 22 controls no real mistakes were made. At one point dad told me that I was going faster than he could navigate which really showed me I had been going too fast at the start. Tried to get the head up more. Felt so much better to be in control and I did allow myself to really run on the last bit but that was ok as it was easy and was still in control.

Therefore the first 7 were awful and I realise that and it is not how I orienteer. I have analysed why it went wrong and feel positive about the second half, something I must remember and not just focus on the negatives. Had a good chat with Lorna afterwards about how I am going to sort this and have a plan for training next weekend. A few people have given me advice and most importantly they have reminded me I can do it which I know I can. I've just got a lot faster but must remember I have a map for a reason!

Bad weekend but lots learned so I guess that is positive.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [3] 2.0 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: Asics GT-2150

Jogging with Dad before and then drills, sprints, strides and stretches on my own. Felt up for it.

Jog after with Huw to try and calm down if nothing else.

Orienteering race 20:33 [5] 2.7 km (7:37 / km)
shoes: Asics GT-2150

Flowing and running really well until 6, in fact was in the lead. Had a bit of a misunderstanding and palava with a gate which I stupidly let annoy me as I knew I had lots time and knew it hadn't effected earlier runners. Managed to get a back into it mostly and was flowing really well, always knowing where my next control was in the park but focus just wasn't there and at 21-22 I started navigating from 1 so went back to 21 to make sure I had got it and then went on. Even with the incident early on it was all to play for still there. Last bit fine but do not believe I was that slow on the run in....

Need to be disciplined, when things go wrong must put it behind me and carry on, the race goes on! Really really disappointed in myself after the race and a bad mood followed. Guess it shows how much I care.

Running warm up/down 7:00 [3] 1.0 km (7:00 / km)
shoes: swoops

Ran out to the top of the hill at Kinnoul with dad as that was where the course started.

Orienteering 53:00 [3] 4.6 km (11:31 / km)
shoes: swoops

Did the course with Dad to make sure we actually got something out of it rather than me just plodding around in a bad mood. He took the first 4 controls and it was really interesting to see how someone else orienteers. When I didn't have to focus on the map so much I could see so much he couldn't which shows that looking up is so important as at times he was right next to the feature or attack point. Then I took the next 4. Our focus was on attack points. First two fine just need more confidence and then got pulled by the wrong path on the 3rd but relocated quickly. 4th fine. Then over to dad again, had one blip but rest fine. Back to me for last 3 and it showed that I really need to have more confidence in myself as I went straight to a control but kept hesitating when direction etc was fine! Things to take from this, look up and be more confident.
Good to get out, much better mood after.

Note

Stretched in the evening as very tight. Feel a lot better for it and will be thankful in the morning.

Ran to CSE and back.

Strength and Conditioning 1:10:00 [3]

Running warm up/down 20:45 [3] 4.0 km (5:11 / km)
shoes: swoops

Up onto Blackford and then back after the session to KB.

Running hills 26:00 [5] 3.0 km (8:40 / km)
shoes: swoops

6x30secs on steep part.
4x2mins on less steep part.
Jog back recovery. Was getting much further this week, think it is because of good conditions.

Orienteering 50:50 [4] 5.4 km (9:25 / km)
shoes: swoops

FWTN at Riccarton, just took it steady as didn't want a repeat of two weeks ago. More good practice for the sprint as it was almost all on campus. Light was absolutely awful even though I had put new batteries in it and was feeling pretty tired but after a few controls orienteered well but struggled to flow due to being unable to see the map or where I was going properly in the dark. Still good training, pleased that I made my own decision on 16 where everyone else went to the wrong side of the building and had to run all the way around.
