Decided to do a longer ride to work as I have an easy day at work. Rode up to Nicholson along Roe Hwy and then turned back to South St.

KillaAvon Adventure Race - Spencer Brook

Leg 1 - MTB - 25:59
Reasonable warm up for the Orienteering leg. Saw everyone zoom off at the start and resigned myself to a day of chasing. No real issues along the way, although nearly missed the track up to TA1. Luckily saw the control in the paddock, opened the map to the O course and saw that it was most likely #8 and went up the track.

Leg 2 - Orienteering - 34:40
This I really enjoyed. Sometimes it's nice to run around a course and not have the pressure of hard nav. Strong down through to #2, where I turned around to see a trail of people behind me. This continued through the entire course - I could hear footprints behind me the whole way and a couple of backward glances prooved I was the "Pied Piper of Peterdine". I tried to fake them out after #6 when I went past a control that wasn't ours to see if I could lead anyone astray (was this one a decoy Tooms?). Made good decisions the whole way and ran hard enough to make everyone work for their free ride!

GPS suggests I did about 6min/km's for this bit, something I don't think I've ever done before (although I may be reading the splits wrong too!).

Leg 3 - MTB - 34:41
Slogged along the gravel and then bitumen to Muresk, picking up #3 along the way. Got a short draft off a couple of pairs along the way.

Leg 4 - Aerial Photo at Muresk - 13:32
Knowing that I wasn't doing the two Double-G controls, I decided to get all of these controls, plus it was a bit of fun. Fumbled a bit near 15, literally, as I dropped my race booklet. Luckily I noticed after only about 10m and found it straight away. Definitely came out on top time wise.

I really like some of the buildings at Muresk, but my favourite was the oval/cricket pitch. Man they breed 'em tough out there!

Leg 5 - MTB - 43:48
Back along the bitumen, avoiding the paddocks. Passed a pair fixing flats along the way and was really happy with my decision not to go for the optional controls.

Struggled a bit along the Avon River single track and neraly missed the control on the bridge. Luckily Ameko saw it and told his partner. I passed the word onto another pair that couldn't find it - fairs fair after all. Into Northam along the bitumen.

Leg 6 - Street Rogaine - 45:07
Started at A and couldn't see the answer, even though I was standing in the right spot - guessed at the Start Line for the Avon Descent. Again decided to get all of these to maximise the time bonuses. Legs were starting to cramp at the basketball courts and felt like a complete TOOL running in my helmet, as I'd forgotten to drop it at the TA. Got them all and was feeling rather spent. Think I probably came out 10 minutes in front of the clock.

Leg 7 - MTB - 1:13:24
Out of Northam along GE Hwy and chose to do the big hill to the optional control. What a climb! I don't think I had any gears left, but I did at least climb faster than one other guy. Nice descent turned into another horror climb on the Kep track. Massive sense of humour failure #1 at this point. Cramping a bit more frequently. Quite slow passed the Army base and up towards #26. Miss read the map here and search around the water tower fence (too early) with a couple of other people. Luckily they saw the control off around the track and we headed out. The universe was smiling for helping others I think. Wasted about 10 minutes with this brain fade. Massive sense of humour failure #2. Picked up my dummy and trudged onwards, and fortunately, downwards!

Heading down to #27 a certain Race Director managed to psych us all out at a bridge too early (see photos apparently) that had us searching the wrong bridge. Slogged it out back to the finish!!!!

Phew!

Word is I came 3rd, although I haven't seen any results. Had to take off almost straight away to get back to the kids as Ceri has been a bit crook all weekend.

Massive thanks to Tooms and Boltboi and all of the helpers.
