Setting at Avon Valley
Ceri and I had decided to make this event ultra-simple on the setting side, so the intent was to put out half the controls each and then check the other half.
We got to the Quarry Rd turn off near the airstrip only to be stopped by a padlocked gate. Shit bum mother fucker was heard uttered once or twice, as we had half of the controls and water and the start up Quarry Rd. Oh well, looked like we were lugging water.
Back to the airstrip - where the fuck is the toilet (that the ranger said was in good nick, so we didn't book another toilet) that used to be right here where the pile of blue metal is? Shit bum mother fucker. So much for making the event easier to organise. Ceri did a mad dash around on foot while I did some circle work in the car. Ceri managed to locate the new dunny further away and nicely hidden from view.
Alright, controls to put out (after the obligatory bush poo on the way). I headed out to the first control, which is on the Starter course - a mound next to a pit in light yellow. Ping in off the end of a ditch, yep that's the other pit over there, ours should be here. WTF!!!! No mound, no pit, bugger all light yellow. Shit bum mother fucker!!! New control site back out on the main road. This setting caper sucks.
The rest of the loop was really good, except for some VERY interesting granite interpretation. The bush was really open and will mean that the courses will be quite fast. Loop done, back to the car.
Ceri's loop had no troubles, so out to check her controls. Perfect as usual and except for small patches of green, we've managed to pick the best parts of this map I think. On the way back to the airstrip I noticed a small track leading off the northern end that we could bush bash a bit to get around the gate on Quarry Rd. So we did and managed to get all of the water out with a minimum of lugging. Glad we bought a car with AWD!
Anyways - if you're thinking of coming out tomorrow, please do. The courses are largely very open and will be quite fast. Just don't step in the bush poo!
