Running 47:41 [3] 5.5 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: Asics Hyperspeed

Hermann Rice short. Felt pretty good, although I died a bit over the last mile. Muggy as hell.

Running 5:00:00 [5] 15.5 mi (19:21 / mi) +4200ft 15:24 / mi
shoes: Trail Attack 4 (2)

Michigan Bluff to Devil's Thumb and back. Way underestimated this one. Great fun running down to Eldorado Creek. Huge climb (2400') up to Devil's Thumb - hard effort. Jumped a rattlesnake on the way up - fun. Bombed parts of the downhill heading back to Eldorado, but paid the price - took a nasty fall & wiped out my legs with the effort. Rested in the creek at the bottom - felt tremendous, but I think my BP cratered a bit and was low on calories. The climb up to Michigan Bluff was absolutely brutal. Hardest climb on my life - had nothing from the get-go. Humbling. Still, an amazing, eye-opening afternoon.

Hiking 50:00 [3] 2.5 mi (20:00 / mi) +600ft 16:18 / mi
shoes: NB MT790(2)

Descended down to Green Gate aid station to watch the lead runners. Hot climb up afterwards.

Running 2:30:00 [3] 11.0 mi (13:38 / mi) +1800ft 11:48 / mi
shoes: NB MT790(2)

Robie Point to Highway 49 crossing on the Western States course with Chris. Great fun for me (Chris, not so much - GI issues). A good bit of climbing. Gorgeous scenery. Legs felt surprisingly lively.

Thursday Jun 24, 2010 #

Running 26:30 [3] 3.2 mi (8:17 / mi)
shoes: Asics Hyperspeed

Hermann loop. Conservative short run to loosen up before the weekend.

Tuesday Jun 22, 2010 #

Running 58:10 [3] 5.5 mi (10:35 / mi)
shoes: NB MT790

Trails in a torrential downpour. Crazy stuff. Lots of water and insane mud slowed things down. But it wasn't no 108 degree heat index! MT790s were "interesting" shoes in these conditions. On the one hand, they had all the traction of Crisco-covered glass. On the other hand, they drained amazingly, didn't collect mud, and remained light throughout. Nasty lightning toward the end cemented the decision to cut things short.

Running 47:38 [3] 5.5 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: Asics Hyperspeed

Hermann / Rice short. Felt fine, but died a little toward the end. Warm and humid (of course); really looking forward to a change in scenery.

Running 2:00:00 [3] 8.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Asics Hyperspeed

Joined Mary for a slice of her crazy mid-June 24-hour run. Distance and time are approximate. Very slow pace mixed with a good deal of walking. Heat of the day on a very hot day. 104 heat index. Just cooked. Purely a time-on-the-feet effort.

Friday Jun 18, 2010 #

Running 30:00 [3] 3.5 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: Asics Hyperspeed

Morning session on the hotel dreadmill in Henderson. Hate running inside, but mixed in a little speed play and incline to keep things from getting too boring.

Thursday Jun 17, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Travel to Nevada.

Wednesday Jun 16, 2010 #

Running 48:39 [3] 5.0 mi (9:44 / mi)
shoes: Asics Hyperspeed

Allen Parkway / Memorial loop with Chris. Two good things about this run: 1) my lower leg felt fine; 2) the new Hyperspeeds should be really nice moderate-mileage road shoes. Everything else about the run sucked tremendously. Heat was just stupid (total convection oven stuff) and I didn't do very well in it.

Tuesday Jun 15, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Taking one more day off before trying to get back at it.

Monday Jun 14, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Rest day. Leg still hurts.

Sunday Jun 13, 2010 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Lower leg pain + life = day off.

Saturday Jun 12, 2010 #

Running 1:50:47 [3] 9.5 mi (11:40 / mi)
shoes: NB MT790(3)

Miserable group trail run. Felt nauseated much of the time. Reduced to long stretches of walking over the last few miles. No fun at all.

Friday Jun 11, 2010 #

Running 47:42 [3] 5.5 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: Cumulus 10

Hermann - Rice short. Actually not a bad run. Legs felt pretty strong throughout, although the heat was horrendous (as usual). Considered adding an extra mile as penance for yesterday's zero day, but the lure of air conditioning and ice-cold Gatorade was too strong.

Wednesday Jun 9, 2010 #

Running 49:13 [3] 5.5 mi (8:57 / mi)
shoes: Cumulus 10

Hermann - Rice short. Very pessimistic going into this run. Pretty fair amount of leg pain yesterday. But, surprisingly, nothing really bothered me too much. Unfortunately, the weather was nearly as unbearable as yesterday - the heat and humidity of a Burmese jungle. Unable to do much with my runs in this weather other than survive and log the miles.

Tuesday Jun 8, 2010 #

Running 57:39 [4] 6.2 mi (9:18 / mi)
shoes: Cumulus 10

Hermann - Rice long. The actual weather conditions at 5:30 this morning (from Accuweather.com): Temp. 78. Humidity 97%. Reel Feel 93. Wind: 0 (yes, that's ZERO. There was NO wind). This is not only why "Reel Feel" / Heat Index etc. is worthless (93 my ass), but if there's a hell for runners, this is what the weather's like there every day. Absolutely the most brutal morning of the year. Hands down. Won't be running with a shirt anymore. Still feel woozy three hours later.

Monday Jun 7, 2010 #

Note
weight:174lbs (rest day)

Back to the normal schedule. Gym for work on core and quads.

Sunday Jun 6, 2010 #

Running 1:16:40 [3] 6.75 mi (11:21 / mi)
shoes: NB MT790

Trails. Brutally hot and humid. Mid-morning is a tough time to run back there. Mixed in a good bit of walking late. Plenty of aches in all the usual spots, but the legs felt fairly strong and I was able to deal with the heat reasonably well. Not a fun run, but necessary.

Saturday Jun 5, 2010 #

Running 1:39:05 [3] 9.5 mi (10:26 / mi)
shoes: NB MT790(3)

Memorial loop + trails with HTREX. Pretty solid pace for a Saturday run. Hot as balls. Crazy humidity. Still, felt pretty good throughout.

Friday Jun 4, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Bailed on today's run. Tired, ambivalent, weak-willed.

Thursday Jun 3, 2010 #

Running 54:19 [3] 6.2 mi (8:46 / mi)
shoes: Cumulus 10

Hermann - Rice long. Really good run for the second day in a row. Solid back-to-back runs = increasing fitness. The rain-cooled morning didn't hurt either. A couple degrees can make a big difference.

Wednesday Jun 2, 2010 #

Running 47:12 [3] 5.5 mi (8:35 / mi)
shoes: Cumulus 10

Hermann - Rice short. Sometimes a day off makes a real difference. Just a good, solid meat & potatoes base-building run. Legs felt strong throughout. Hardly any aches.

Climbing 15:00 [3] +360ft

24 floors at work (two sets of 10, plus a bonus 4). Gets kinda warm in the stairwells...

Tuesday Jun 1, 2010 #

Note
weight:176lbs (rest day)

Gym for some core and quad work. Hate the gym. Weight up, but feeling the opposite. Oh well.
