Hiking 5:40:00 [3] 11.8 mi (28:49 / mi) +2200ft 24:29 / mi
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295-v2

GMNP. Dog Canyon to Pine Springs via Tejas Trail. A bit lazy breaking camp (my fault mostly) meant a less cool start than would have been ideal. Felt like utter shit up the nearly 1600 foot climb out of Dog Canyon to Lost Peak - quesy and weak the entire way. But, as usually happens when you're out there for awhile, things turned around a few miles in and the rest of the day was very solid (if not always easy). The middle portion of the Tejas was just lovely - a bona fide pine forest that just appears out of nowhere. When we hit the intersection with the Bush Mt and Bowl trails unexpectedly fast, the executive decision to dump water and hike down to Pine Springs was made. The 3.8 mile downhill off the ridge was surprisingly challenging - fairly technical in sections & exposed throughout. Overall, another great trip to the Guads.

Hiking 6:30:00 [3] 11.4 mi (34:13 / mi) +1750ft 29:52 / mi
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295-v2

GMNP. Bush Mountain campsite to Dog Canyon via Bush Mt and Marcus trails. After a fitful night's sleep because of crazy high winds, this turned out to be a real pleasure - probably the most enjoyable day of hiking out there. Gorgeous weather, a couple of challenging (but not soul-destroying) climbs, and an early arrival at a nearly-empty Dog Canyon.

Hiking 5:00:00 [3] 6.1 mi (49:11 / mi) +3100ft 33:12 / mi
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295-v2

GMNP. Pine Springs TH to Bush Mountain campsite via Tejas and Bush Mountain trails. A sobering grind up to the ridge with a 35 lbs. pack. But so good to be in some big outdoors. Est. vert to come.

Running 45:44 [3] 6.0 mi (7:37 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Hermann-Rice short. Best six-miler in some time; really dialed in today. Felt smooth and controlled throughout - the feeling of regaining running shape. Finally.

Running 34:40 [3] 4.4 mi (7:53 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Hermann loop. Just sort of tired this morning, so I kept it short. Started to feel a bit better toward the end.

Sunday Apr 21, 2013 #

Running 53:38 [3] 6.0 mi (8:56 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Grit

Sunday morning trails. Managed to not crack my skull on anything today. Yay. Legs were turning over nicely and was a very solid run overall. Starting to feel like I should back there.

Running 1:27:26 [3] 8.5 mi (10:17 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295-v2

Mid-morning trails. Gorgeous morning and almost a perfect run. Everything felt very solid and save for cracking my skull on a low-hanging tree limb, it would have been an A+ run. Thought about cutting it short for a few minutes, but the wound was more of an oozer than a gusher, so I stuck to the original plan. Glad I did.

Running 23:08 [3] 2.9 mi (7:59 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Late-afternoon Hermann short. A test of the summer plan. Legs were a little post-day-off dead, but it was over before it really bothered me. I like this short stuff!!

Wednesday Apr 17, 2013 #

Running 48:31 [3] 6.0 mi (8:05 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Hermann-Rice short. Every instinct in my being said "stay in bed; you don't want to go out there." Yet, somehow, I managed to drag my ass out the door. It is often unwise to ignore instinct. To some this run up: Blech. And let it be known that April 17 marks the first morning of 2013 to require the following: no shirt, post-run standing under the fan, and the use of the shower to both clean and cool the core (no warm water this morning). The stuffing of shoes with newspaper can't be far behind.

Running 58:20 [3] 6.0 mi (9:43 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Grit

Late-afternoon trails with Chris. Well, this one sucked pretty much start to finish. Very warm - 83 - and super humid. Tough conditions at this time of year before one is acclimated to the heat. Had Chris not been there, I would have walked more and/or bailed early. That said, we did log the miles, so that's something.

Running 40:10 [3] 5.1 mi (7:53 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Hermann - Braes loop. Legs felt predictably sluggish after Saturday's effort, but they started to come around late. And nothing really hurt, which is always a big positive.

Walking 40:00 [3] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Pure Connect

Walk through Hermann Park with Cathy and Hannah to check out the Japan Festival. Needless to say, really leisurely.

Running 2:37:55 [3] 15.5 mi (10:11 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295-v2

Hogs Hunt 25K. Last-minute decision to run this one. Glad I did. Lovely morning. Nice to run in a social setting every so often. Felt pretty solid overall, although some left calf tightness had me running a bit tentatively late in the game.

Thursday Apr 11, 2013 #

Running 35:45 [3] 4.5 mi (7:57 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Hermann loop. Lunchtime getaway run. Really straightforward and consistent. Felt solid from the get go. Honest but not especially hard pace. Kept it short in case I decide to run the Hogs Hunt 25K on Saturday. Gametime decision that...

Wednesday Apr 10, 2013 #

Running 47:48 [3] 6.0 mi (7:58 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Hermann-Rice short. Tried to focus on form this morning after reading a good piece on the cycle of injuries. Legs were somewhat achy, but not completely lifeless.

Tuesday Apr 9, 2013 #

Running 47:08 [3] 6.0 mi (7:51 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue

Hermann-Rice short. Mild morning. Although the legs didn't feel exactly electric, everything felt reasonably good. Pretty solid pace overall.

Sunday Apr 7, 2013 #

Running 55:52 [3] 6.0 mi (9:19 / mi)
shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295-v2

Trails: Endless/Green. Felt surprisingly solid. Very busy morning on the trails. Lots of bikers. 25% were courteous and/or knew what they were doing. The rest were a bunch of stupid d-bags. Not enough to spoil a nice run though.

Saturday Apr 6, 2013 #

Running 1:45:17 [3] 10.0 mi (10:32 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Saturday from Chris's house. Maybe 2.5 on the hard stuff and the rest was trails. Felt pretty good throughout, although definitely had some fatigue toward the end. Just nice to be able to run long enough to actually get fatigued without some body part breaking down or falling off.

Friday Apr 5, 2013 #

Running 35:26 [3] 4.4 mi (8:03 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Hermann loop. A short late-afternoon run. Energy was good even if the legs didn't feel exactly terrific.

Wednesday Apr 3, 2013 #

Running 47:46 [3] 6.0 mi (7:58 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Hermann-Rice short. The rainout I was secretly hoping for failed to materialize (the wicked thunderstorms rolled through hours earlier), so I had no excuse. Felt a bit rickety early on, but then settled into a reasonable pace. Other than general fatigue-ish aches, none of the usual suspects bothered me at all. So this one goes down as a nice run.

Tuesday Apr 2, 2013 #

Running 48:00 [3] 6.0 mi (8:00 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Hermann-Rice short. Although things weren't feeling exactly spry, none of the machinery was acting up and I managed a good, consistent effort and pace throughout. Plus, I got my ass out of bed and ran in the morning for the second day in a row. I am awesome.

Monday Apr 1, 2013 #

Running 41:30 [3] 5.1 mi (8:08 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue 2

Hermann + Braes. Getting my lazy ass out the door this morning was a win. The run itself was uneventful. Flat-ish legs, but not terrible. Rinse and repeat. That's the whole goal right now. Time approximate as my watch battery died.

Walking 28:49 [3] 2.1 mi (13:43 / mi)
shoes: Pure Connect - Electric Blue

After-work Braes loop to stretch out the legs and back.
