Running 48:21 [3] 5.8 mi (8:20 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow Grey/Green

Hermann-Rice short. Unsurprisingly, the sticks were a bit dead. But the rain-cooled conditions helped keep the pace fairly honest. Mileagewise, August didn't quite turn out as planned, but I managed to finish with a good second half of the month. And 466 miles in 70 runs for the three core summer months is technically my best June/July/Aug ever. Time for a day off!

Running 1:57:49 [3] 11.1 mi (10:37 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow2 Blue

Saturday long run with Chris. Humid (of course) but not as wretched as some mornings. Memorial / Allen Parkway loop. Super relaxed Saturday pace kept things feeling pretty good overall. I veered off toward the end into the trails - Purple + Orange - for a touch more. Not a bad run.

Running 37:48 [3] 4.3 mi (8:47 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow Grey/Green

Hermann. The moment I walked out the door, I made the executive decision to shorten this one from the planned 5.9. Easily makes the top-3 most miserable conditions of 2014. It's like August was saying "I'm not done with you, bitch!" Gobsmacking humidity & zero breeze (unless a car drove by really fast) made for epic sweating. Bleh.

Running 1:00:45 [3] 7.1 mi (8:33 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow2 Blue

Braes + H-R long. Other than a bit of an upset stomach, this one went pretty well. Felt smooth & easy until the last couple of miles, and even then I didn't feel bad, just a little fatigued. A run of good runs this week.

Running 36:28 [3] 4.3 mi (8:29 / mi)
shoes: PureConnect3

Hermann. Repeat of last week's speed work - 3 x 0.5 mile. A little more consistent this time: 3:28 (6:56/mi); 3:40 (7:20); 3:34 (7:08). The measurements on these 1/2 mile stints are probably not perfect, but it's close. The effort on each felt appropriate. When it cools down, I'd like to see what I can do for a mile - not all out, but at maybe 90%. My guess right now: I'd struggle to run a 6:30 mile. The effort would likely leave me vomiting on the side of the path.

Running 53:03 [3] 6.5 mi (8:10 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow Grey/Green

Hermann-Rice long. Instead of looking at last week as a failure of motivation, maybe it was simply my body/mind telling me that I needed more rest. Whatever the case, like yesterday, this run was pretty damn good. Everything felt really dialed in start to finish. Go figure.

Running 48:26 [3] 5.9 mi (8:13 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow2 Blue

Hermann-Rice short. OK, back at it - just need to finish August out. Typical nasty conditions, but I was oddly unbothered by it. Legs felt super rested (imagine that) & the run was definitely one of the better ones in a while - everything felt surprisingly crisp.

Note
(rest day)

A lost weekend.

Saturday Aug 23, 2014 #

Running 29:55 [3] 3.7 mi (8:05 / mi)
shoes: PureConnect3

Hermann short. Ditched the long run this morning. Zero motivation. Did manage to get out at noon for this one, just to stretch the legs. Unbelievably hot, but I was done before the heat could wear me down.

Friday Aug 22, 2014 #

Running 36:27 [3] 4.3 mi (8:29 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow Grey/Green

Hermann. Hit the first half maybe a bit too hard & felt somewhat nauseated by the 2.5 mile mark. Walked briefly before jogging a bit & managed to get it back together enough to push the last mile a little. Nasty hot.

Thursday Aug 21, 2014 #

Running 56:31 [3] 6.5 mi (8:42 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow2 Blue

Hermann-Rice long. Worst early morning conditions of the summer. Truly wretched heat/humidity/calm wind combination. That said, managed it fairly well. Legs felt pretty good, actually. Worked to keep the motor below redline.

Wednesday Aug 20, 2014 #

Running 35:41 [3] 4.3 mi (8:18 / mi)
shoes: PureConnect3

Hermann. Speed work: 3 x 0.5 mile at plus pace with 0.25 rest between each. 7:15, 7:25, 7:35 (started to die on the last one). Liking these "get it over quick" runs.

Tuesday Aug 19, 2014 #

Running 34:51 [3] 4.3 mi (8:06 / mi)
shoes: PureConnect3

Hermann loop. Have decided to shorten the weekday runs in an effort to shake things up and get out of the late-summer doldrums. The effort was fairly hard, but this was due to pushing the pace a little rather than trying to survive the heat. Overall, a more satisfying experience.

Monday Aug 18, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Yay zero!

Sunday Aug 17, 2014 #

Running 1:02:33 [3] 6.4 mi (9:46 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow2 Blue

Hermann-Rice long. Late-morning effort in absolutely brutal heat - Reel Feel of 105 (and it felt hotter than that). Pretty much just a survival run. Very slow pace with some preemptive short walks thrown in. Slight route variation so I could stand under the splash fountains near the lake - man, it felt good. Not sure there was much to be gained by running in these conditions...

Saturday Aug 16, 2014 #

Running 1:38:20 [3] 9.0 mi (10:56 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow Grey/Green

Lieberman/Memorial to Montrose/Allen Parkway/Memorial. Met the group at 7:00 and for some reason decided to join Siva and Gabby on the roads rather than the others for trails. Probably because it was nasty hot and I figured there might at least be a breeze out of the woods. Wasn't a bad run at all. Chill pace with some walking and typical Siva photo seasons until the last couple of miles with Siva picked it up & I just couldn't follow suit. Considering that I struggled to even get out of bed, I'm fine with the effort.

Friday Aug 15, 2014 #

Running 48:46 [3] 5.9 mi (8:16 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow2 Blue

Hermann-Rice short. Notwithstanding the skanky mid-August conditions, the day off helped, as things felt much better today. Kept the pace relaxed until the last couple of miles when the pace became a bit more crisp. Running on fumes the last 1/2 mile, but overall a strong run.

Thursday Aug 14, 2014 #

Note
(rest day)

Decided I'd be better served by sleeping in and taking a zero after feeling less than 100% the last couple of days.

Wednesday Aug 13, 2014 #

Running 50:28 [3] 5.9 mi (8:33 / mi)
shoes: PureConnect3

Hermann-Rice short. Maybe a half dozen short-ish progressions around Rice made for today's "speed work." Still really flat. Pretty sure I'm battling some sort of low-level bug, as my stomach has been jacked up and my energy low. Bleh. At least the humidity was relatively low for mid-August. Nice breeze from the north made things less sucky than they would have been otherwise.

Tuesday Aug 12, 2014 #

Running 1:02:53 [3] 7.1 mi (8:51 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow Grey/Green

Hermann-Rice long + Braes. In one word: flat. Legs were flat, motor was flat, psyche was flat. Not a horrible run by any stretch, but just kind of meh. This essential quality is reflected in the pace. Despite the horrid humidity, weatherwise it was noticeably less miserable than yesterday.

Monday Aug 11, 2014 #

Running 49:33 [3] 5.9 mi (8:24 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow2 Blue

Hermann-Rice short. After spending much of the last 4 days soaking in cool lake waters, this was a predictable shock to the system. True dog days conditions - the only solace to be had is that it won't get much worse. Everything felt pretty decent, though, especially over the last couple of miles.

Friday Aug 8, 2014 #

Running 1:03:15 [3] 5.2 mi (12:10 / mi)
shoes: PureConnect3

Lakeshore Loop at Lake Norman State Park. Got away for a fun run on some awesome trails at a very nice park. Less than a mile in, the sky opened up and it rained hard for the next couple of miles, which was cool (literally and figuratively).

Tuesday Aug 5, 2014 #

Running 55:05 [3] 6.5 mi (8:28 / mi)
shoes: PureFlow2 Blue

Hermann-Rice long. The morning check of the weather conditions confirmed that all traces of the weekend's not-completely-horrific weather were gone. Went into this one with low expectations, but it turned out to be pretty good. Everything felt remarkably strong throughout. Pace wasn't overly quick, but if that had been the intent, I think the motor would have been there for it.

Day-o-rest

Sunday Aug 3, 2014 #

Running 37:02 [3] 4.2 mi (8:49 / mi)
shoes: PureConnect3

Hermann. Debated whether to take a zero today after yesterday's long one. Decided to go out, but kept it short and slow. Mid-day was hot, but not terrible - slightly lower humidity and a solid breeze helped a lot. Leg felt surprisingly ok.

Saturday Aug 2, 2014 #

Running 2:32:35 [3] 13.2 mi (11:34 / mi)
shoes: Altra Lone Peak 1.5

HSP with Chris. Good to get out of town. Overcast and relatively mild (albeit super humid) conditions meant no overheating worries. Instead, it was just a case a dead legs after about 9-10 miles. No trail legs yet. All in all, a remarkably decent run for early August.

Friday Aug 1, 2014 #

Running 35:23 [3] 4.3 mi (8:14 / mi)
shoes: PureConnect3

Hermann. Wanted to keep it short but not slow. Overnight rains knocked about 10 degrees off the heat index, so conditions were good. Not unhappy with the pace, but it was never smooth or particularly easy. I think the summer slogging has made me even slower. Need to keep up with the speed work and maybe use Fridays for this sort of shorter & slightly quicker run.
