Miwok. Really disappointing day. Everything felt really pretty solid. Weather was perfect. Trails were Cali-buff. Even the hard fall I took early on was all show, no hurt. Then the fucking foot started up & it was clear it wasn't going to fade away. The climb out of Randall was incredibly frustrating, as my legs were super willing (to the point of running short sections), but the foot pain was agonizing. Worse, I was starting to overcompensate in ways that were simply not sustainable for 62 miles. So I did what I had to do and hobbled back down to Stinson when the chance came and the day was over. Not sure what to do about the foot, which is clearly a structural issue. For now, the summer makes it easy to keep the runs short. Long term, I'm not sure that these long efforts are options any longer.

Hermann. And so it is done. Whew. Nice, super-relaxed effort on a lovely, cool morning. Everything felt good to go. Nothing left to do but pack...

Hermann-Rice short. What is it about runs during the taper? With everything ostensibly rested, shouldn't they feel better? Nothing wrong with this one - legs were strong, nothing hurt. But it seemed like there should be more pep, even though the pace was solid. It is what it is. 4 super relaxed tomorrow & then the work is done.

Hermann-Rice long. Welcome back, summer. Oh yeah - you suck. As did this run, generally. First couple miles were fine (maybe at too chippy a pace even), but when I hit the Rice loop, the 85-degree heat index and the overwhelming, sickly-sweet smell of honeysuckle in full, riotous bloom, began to grind me down. The legs were there, but the cardio wasn't, as breathing became far more labored than it should have been. A little perfume of honeysuckle is a nice reminder of Spring. Being suffocated by the smell . . . not so nice. Off tomorrow, followed by short and easy Tue and Wed. Almost there.
