Rogaining race (Upside Down 12hr) 12:00:00 70.0 km (10:17 / km)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D - 3rd
Good race with Ben. Furthest I've gone in a 12hr. Completed our planned course of 66km except for not finding control 68. Lost time there which prevented us adding a 1.5km detour to get 86, which meant it was a 140 point mistake. Still under what it would have taken to win (came 2nd).
In planning we tossed up whether to do a 70km course or the 66km which was 150pts less. (Not sure what the diff between 1 and 2 was, waiting for results).
We kept a very steady pace throughout. Was impressed with Ben's pacing discipline - we rarely ran in the first half, pretty much only downhill and never for a long period of time.
Saw Tim and Glenn run off to 21 at the start as we went for 31. They beat us to 31 and then ran off up the hill to 91 where we were going and disappeared. Thought about what they were able to do in the world's in NZ in 12hrs and contemplated their fate - either winning or losing gloriously. We followed their route until they branched off to get 71 and 80, the 150pts we decided not to get. Then we were ahead for most of the SE corner. Saw a team approaching us at speed around 103/72 but they branched off. Overtook Ian T and Chip between 72 and 88. Passed John and Ricky from 88 to 47, noted they were running well down the hill.
Encountered a period of boredom around 3am, something new for me in a rogaine event, the controls started being really easy to get and standing out a mile in the paddocks. Just an hour later we're really paying for it going from 90 to 68 in the bush. Travelling 1.6k mostly on a side slope, over two watercourses and one spur we got confused by a minor spur and tried to find the saddle on this one, which put us in bushy flattish country, tried a few things, figured out where we must be (on the 1.2k ridge, about 400m away) and then decided we'd lost too much time to head back (still take a risk) to find 68 and continued north to 81. It appears to be the right decision because we were only just able to complete the rest of our course.
From 6am onwards we were back onto 6kph pace which required what felt like running 50% of the time. At 76 I calculated we had 30 minutes at 6kph to complete 3km, most of which was uphill. Arrived within a few minutes of the finish, feeling fairly ok. The running seems to refresh you.
The drive back was easier than last year. I was able to drive for a good stretch this time. Perhaps my napping while we went to pickup controls helped.
Food - est ate about 75% of what I brought. Did not feel like eating for most of it. Got tired of the muesli bars. Few raisin/dried fruit, candies helped at about 9hr mark, and equivalent of 2 shots, in the last 2hrs. Small coke at 8hr mark, gatorade bottle from 6.5hr.
Forgot to bring map pin board, luckily we were able to borrow some cardboard from the admin team.
Ground was nice and smooth underfoot, fences easy to step over, temp perfect, no bad bush. And really enjoyed the thought at the 8hr mark, just when the body's starting to feel a bit of pain, that it was only a 12hr and not a 24hr like my last two.
