Technique session with Ty Stedman. Well worth it. Glad I haven't picked up any bad habits in the stroke as I was able to execute close to good technique. Started out with the intro from Ty on the stroke - location of hands on the paddle (mark these on paddle with tape), essentially pulling yourself along as if there are poles in the water, so that body rotates, best position of paddle in the water is vertical, spearing the catch, well in front (mark on boat where I'm catching, see if improve), level position in mid stroke, relaxed hands, dropped elbows, upper arm rotating mostly with shoulder and not extending, upper hand at eye level at catch, lift out at end of stroke, power generated in a series of movements from feet to hands - reverse of kicking a footy. Lot's to think about.
Started out with an exercise to pause at mid stroke every three strokes - paddle level. Then a pause at catch. Then arms straight exercise to fire up the abs. Looking forward to my next time on the water. Could feel more power and speed coming on.
