Rogaining race (Bright Lights ZigZag 6hr) 5:53:45 [4] 23.61 km (14:59 / km) +981m 12:24 / km
shoes: Hoka Challenger ATR orange

6hr rogaine with Joel. We did not expect to be competitive, neither of us having trained since the last rogaine 4 weeks ago, and seeing a number of strong running teams in the field. But everything went well and we made some good decisions and had a few lucky breaks to end up leaving only the 60 pointer at the far end of the map out, and so winning b/c Ricky's team left two controls out.

A hot day and thick scratchy bush for a lot of it. We managed to cool down from a big pool of the Helena river water after about the first 2 hrs. Some beautiful views and discovered nice mtb tracks - will need to go back. A lot of it is also old training grounds, a lot of it done with Wil in our night runs from a few years back, so enjoyed seeing the various spots again.

We must have been a few minutes ahead of Ricky and Pete when we reached 90 and then had the same controls to finish, this was about 5:05 from the trace, made a quick decision to go for it, again b/c we were not being competitive we didn't mind if we made a mistake and came back late. Then it was hell for leather trying to find 109... found the creek, saw we were too high and then followed it down a bit and found it. Then, 100 was down about 300m down the ridge line to a non descript rocky point. Luckily we saw a feint track on the map below it, so just went for it, and found it first go. Then 91 was mostly a track run contour, and then mostly track to 78, and then all track to 77 and finish - so made it with a few minutes to spare.

Not my normal rogaine experience - not expecting anything, dubious fitness (I had a calf strain a week ago, and still with a baddish cold, Joel feeling under trained as well), and then a low stress enjoyable rogaine, and back still feeling fairly fresh to find out we won.
