US champs Ultralong at East Fork State Park, hosted by OCIN
Mass start event never ceases to amaze. Some good follows, definitely some bad as well. Ran with Tom for most of the day, along with a pack of 3 other strong runners through the middle part of the race. Somewhat turned off the brain from 16 to 20, trying to keep up the pace. After the water stop between 20 & 21 decided to split off a trail route with Nicolay. Had wanted to take that route, but would not have chosen to go it alone. Ran the footpath to the north-south creek trail without looking over my shoulder. I had no idea where Tom and the OUSA duo had gone - either ahead or behind - but found myself alone for the rest of the race. Wanted to push hard, but not blow up now that I was running solo. Luckily didn't have any issues with the remaining controls and finished the event with tired legs but happy spirit. Ended up pulling out a 4th place run, but got the bronze in the USA category. Happy to finish so well amongst such a competitive crowd. I think Tom and I ran smart, sitting in the back when needing to, but holding our own when in the woods by ourselves.
Great weekend of orienteering! So much fun to hang out with the MNOC crew, cruising 11 deep at this distant event. Definitely makes the event a success, no matter the results.
