xc skiing 1:30:00 [2]

So incredibly gorgeous with the heavy snow falling and the trees heavy laden! But words cannot describe it. Went out with Sandi to the KOA. Mostly had to cut our own trails. Good thing I wore gaiters because my ankles completely disappeared. Sandi, who doesn't own gaiters, had to tuck her pants in her socks. Quite a sight! Luckily the snow covered them.

Uptown. Should have worn snowshoes. Snow way too deep!

snow shoe 1:49:00 [3]

Snowshoe in Bracebridge with Debbie. Some great vistas and a few scary moments when we broke through the ice, slid down the hills and dodged trees. Lots of fun and gorgeous weather for a snowshoe!

Big loop at Hardy Lake with Paula. Sooo very, very cold. Had to keep our faces covered. We should have brought some more food other than the granola bar we shared because I felt a little confused and sluggish at the end. Carried my water under my shirt against my belly (thank god for the extra fat) and it stayed a nice temperature. Last time I went in this cold I carried it in my waist pouch and it froze.

A couple of places we stopped in the glorious sunshine and soaked up the rays. You could feel your parts thawing.

Had the most amazing snowshoe ever!! Emily and i braved the storm and headed out to Hardy Lake. More than a foot of fresh snow!! It was like a winter wonderland. Visibility across the lake was nil. At times, blankets of snow would plop down from the trees. During the last 15 minutes the sun came out. It was spectacular!

xc skiing 49:15 [4]

I braved the elements again and went for a quick ski. The trails close at 5 so there wasn't much time. Nice to have some new snow but that means more friction. Plus lots of debris on the the trail and blown over sections. Crazy winds but a great ski!

Thanks to cyclegirl1, I squeezed it in. Hopefully it doesn't keep me up.
Chamomile tea and a good book should do the trick. Pretty tired anyway. Was up at 4:30 this morning to get Larry to the airport.

Hopefully winter comes back tomorrow...

xc skiing 1:50:00 [3]

Lovin' these sunny days! Supposed to rain tomorrow so I went for another loop. Skied the first loop with Sandi and the second with Kristen.

Sore right knee on the second loop which I think is a result of a tight IT band. (same problem last year). Followed with a good stretch and the foam roller.

I was meeting Lori for coffee today in Huntsville so we thought we'd strap on our snowshoes and try out the trails at Arrowhead provincial park.

Great trails and an absolutely gorgeous day out there with that blue, blue sky and bright sunshine. We took time for pictures and yakking. Did the Stubbs Falls trail and ,of course, checked out the falls. The mist had frozen on the trees which was beautiful!

Note

Tonight we enjoyed the Banff Mountain Film festival at the Algonquin Theatre in Huntsville. About 24 of us met for dinner beforehand at The Cottage restaurant. Great company and wonderful stories about trips and adventures.

The festival was awesome. My favourite film was called Take a Seat: Dominic Gill's 32000 km ride on a tandem bike from the northern coast of Alaska to the southern tip of South America. Picking up random strangers along the way.
Great clips about skiing, biking whitewater kayaking and climbing & lots of crazy stuff that I'd never do!

Finally it's snowing today. Not much but enough to make it all clean and pretty. We still have a good base for snowshoeing (a couple of feet). But the ski trails are messy and icy. So this should make things better.

As a result of yesterday's strength work I am having trouble with stairs and getting in and out of my car, and pretty much sitting down or standing up. Not sure what I'll manage for activity tonight...

Pretty pleased with my results at the Thomass event yesterday. Although there were a couple of controls I could have done better. Next time!

biking 30:00 [2]

strength 34:00 [3]

Really worked up a sweat here.

Core 18 min.
Walking lunges 8 min.
3 sets of 40
Ball squats 8 min.
3 sets of 20

Realized I've been neglecting my strength workouts. Need to work glutes to balance strong hip flexors and work core. All that to prevent imbalances that trigger back and hip problems for me. (and my back/hip have been acting up lately).

Too bad that's what it takes to remind me. If only I had a little warning light that blinks "danger, danger!"

biking 1:02:18 [3] 19.27 km (3:14 / km)

Little unmotivated today.

orienteering (approx.) 1:12:00 [4]

Awaiting results.

Absolutely a great Thomass event at Forks of the Credit, put on by Caledon Navigators. Phatty designed a fun and challenging course.

Terrific food, especially the famous "Crash brownies"!

orienteering 1:08:00 [4]

Challenging training event for the upcoming Snowshoe Raid put on by Bob Miller.

Unfortunately, Rebutt and I went out way too far to get back on time within the 1 hour time limit. Therefore, our total was in the negative. Oops!

Good lesson for the Raid...

Note

Great AR wrap up party! Nice to see so many friends there and really enjoyed the slideshows from Leanimal, Bash and BobTheNavigator. Those were some extraordinary races and quite inspiring!
However, Bob takes the cake for perseverence! The next time one of us gets wimpy in a race I will recount Bob's tale of his infection in the "nether region" and how he still managed to finish the race. :)

swimming (laps/pool) 1:11:00 [3] 2.0 km (35:30 / km)

This time I didn't pack my bag the night before and, as a result ,sleep poorly because of worrying about getting up on time. I just went to bed and told myself that if I woke up early enough I would head to the pool.
Well, I woke up at 4:15 and hopped out og bed. Lots of time for a coffee , toast and a glass of milk before heading to the pool. In the water at 6:30. Woo hoo!

Great swim but I have to say I prefer swimming in the Lake where I only have to turn 5 times while swimming this distance. In the pool I have to turn 78 times!

Meeting with the dietitian at ten, we'll see what I learn...

Great early morning ski. The tracks were messy but nice and fast! Really trying to improve my technique. First fast ski I've had in a bit so it was a lot of fun!

We could use some fresh snow, though.

With my daughter gone for the weekend and my husband home, I decided to skip the Thomass event put on by the TOC and stick close to home.

Went out for a group snowshoe at Porcupine Ridge in Bracebridge. Followed that with take-out chinese at Gary and Debbie's. Good times with good friends.

xc skiing 2:00:00 [2]

Went out skiing with some less experienced skiers which was good for me because I had to keep things low key. Lots of fun and very social. Gorgeous weather to boot!
We were out there about 3 1/2 hours but only skied about two. Usually this section takes me less than an hour.

Have to consider buying new boots because I got new blisters again. I'm positive the size is fine and I've tried all kinds of socks.

Very low intensity stuff today . Went to the chiropractor for treatment on hip/back thing. Feeling much better after treatment but have been advised to take it easy this weekend. sigh...

xc skiing 46:00 [3]

What a gorgeous sunny day! Because of that, I decided to start off on the Marsh trail to enjoy the sunshine. This year I guess they're grooming it (quite roughly) for skateskiing. Seeing as I usually only ski on groomed, trackset trails, that was a bit of a challenge. Twice, I simply fell right over!

The rest of the trails were groomed nicely for us classic skiers so it wasn't a problem.

Only downside? Blisters. Will have to try different socks although I recall the same problem last year. Will have to research...

Better do some stretching.

Note

Found out today that there is a dietitian in our health centre and that it's covered by OHIP! So I've made arrangements to meet with her on Monday. Pretty excited!

Still, thanks Bash for recommending Crash (or is it PGB) to me. I might feel more accountable if I actually meet in person with someone.

Yeah! Nailed one of my goals. I don't think I'll be able to make Friday's spin class because I have to take Danielle to horseback riding. But maybe something will work out.

As for the running, I guess I'll have to try it with my grips. Can't find any Yak Trax in town.

hiking 30:00 [2]

Easy day today due to sore hip and knee. Probably IT band.

Pretty cold out there today! Dare I say even colder than yesterday?

Note

Not sure what all my goals are or will be but here are two I've decided on:

1 Try winter running this week and get at least one session of running (hopefully outdoors otherwise track) in per week.

2 One swimming session/week. I really enjoyed ,and was proud, of my 2k swims at Gull lake this past summer. Plus it will keep me from overtraining certain muscles.

3 Join the spin class Fridays at the Bike Shop. (guess that's 3)

Debbie, Cheryl and I braved the -31 windchill and did the trails near our house. Stopped to jump (read: slide down) some cliffs for thrills. Soooo cold we had to cover our faces on the ridges.

Note

Today I spent a little time reflecting on 2009. Although it was not a racing year for me due to injuries, it turns out that there were more memorable outdoor adventures this year than any other.Quite a few with new friends others with long time buddies.

So I think the injury provided me with a new perspective on enjoying the outdoors at a non-competitive level which turned out to be quite rewarding.

This year my main goal is to train smart and thus be injury free (knock on wood), and to be able to enjoy the outdoors as often as possible both at a competitive level and just for the fun of it.
