Road cycling 35:00 [3]

The usual. I am feeling guilty as I did absolutely no study this weekend. Literally none. Where is the motivation??

Traffic lights were a pain today.

Road cycling 34:00 [3]

There was a headwind to battle against so I will count this as good training :)

I'm going to skip the run for today - cycling will have to do - I had an orchestra rehearsal after getting back from the hospital so that took most of my time this evening, and the rest will have to be dedicated to study/case history writing.

Seriously wondering whether I should continue with the med school orchestra this year... first rehearsal was a bit depressing... we have lots of cellos though! but not a single one playing in time... gargh. It better improve or I will leave the rest of them to sort it out - lame, I know, but I have my new quartet which is going super well so I can always just focus on that. Plus another orchestra I agreed to play in... oh yes, it all adds up...

Orienteering race 39:29 [3] 3.9 km (10:07 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Another course at Whakaipo Bay. Wasn't feeling too great... just quite slow and tired. Made a bad mistake at number 7... went way past the control then realised and had to turn back. Also number 3 was pretty horrible because it was in the wrong place and I chose the route to the left which meant a lot more distance and having to wade through the lake :( (at least the lake was quite pleasant but it did slow me down).

So overall, not the best weekend for me. Think I learnt something from it though!

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Orienteering race 22:53 [3] 2.5 km (9:09 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Short course at Whakaipo Bay, was good and pretty easy apart from number 9 which I lost probably 3 minutes on... I'm still sure it was way too low! Grr.

Orienteering race 1:06:00 [3] 6.1 km (10:49 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Katoa Po leg 5. What a shocking run, may have been one of my worst Katoa Po runs ever :( Sort of started off ok, but then was pretty bad at keeping my direction on the long leg to 5 - ended up way off track and had to recorrect. Then at 7 went one system too far to the right - which involved wading through a marsh - and then I realised and had to go back through the marsh. Grr, very time consuming. Then after that I was running fast but navigating hopelessly - pretty much overshooting every control or not getting my exit direction right. Then running fast to the next one but again not navigating well and so losing more time...

I think I just needed to stop for a few seconds and take a break and refocus. I really was not concentrating well at all :(

Running 55:50 [3] 11.1 km (5:02 / km)
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

Happy run :) I did this run pretty late because earlier today I wasn't feeling great - tired and had a headache. But then later this evening I felt really good, so I went out and ran. It was a good pace I think and didn't feel too hard. I ran on lots of the usual roads - Maskell, around Fern Glen, down Towai to Madills Farm, up Hawera, down Southern Cross, up Grampian Dr then back along St Heliers Bay Rd.

Really enjoyable run, I feel like the subthreshold run I did was helpful in getting me to run at a decent pace.

And at least the timing of this run should be good practise for Katoa Po tomorrow :)

Running warm up/down 11:30 [3]
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

Managed to get up at some ungodly hour and did the warm up with Mike starting from the Olympic pool in Newmarket.

Running tempo 1:02:10 [4] 12.9 km (4:49 / km)
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

Extended the subthreshold run from last time by going as far as the BP along Remuera/St Johns Rd, then turning around and going down Lucerne Rd and the rest of the loop etc. It actually felt really good, even easier than last time! I don't know if this means I should have pushed harder? Even Ayr St at the end wasn't so bad. My strategy was not to take the uphills too fast because that can really mess things up, and to be a bit more aggressive the rest of the time. It is difficult judging these things I find.
7 AM

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

Did a 9 minute warm down back and forth along Parnell Rd waiting for Mike but he obviously was doing a longer run, so then I gave up and jogged for 6 minutes around the edge of the domain to uni.

Road cycling 36:00 [3]

It is actually so cold these days!
4 PM

Road cycling 32:30 [3]

I have much to do tonight - made Toby's birthday cake finally, have to finish off a presentation for tomorrow - so probably won't run. I will save the "happy run" for Friday :) Why do I always have such busy Wednesdays?

Anyway I also need a bit more sleep if I am to get up sometime between 5-5:30 so I can do the killer subthreshold run again with Mike :)

Road cycling 37:00 [3]

Slow this morning... can't really remember why though! Just didn't make the effort I guess, and it was windy.
4 PM

Road cycling 50:00 [2]

Cycled to Self's Farm for the orienteering, it wasn't a great ride - there was a ton of traffic to battle with and some long waiting periods at traffic lights. Also a rather strong headwind for most of the way! So I just took it easy.

It would be interesting to try different routes for getting there - I wonder if there is a way to avoid a lot of the traffic... I went through Newmarket, down Manukau Rd which is always pretty bad, then through Onehunga, over the bridge to Coronation Rd, then Mahunga Dr, Robertson Rd, Massey Rd and Tidal Rd.
6 PM

Orienteering race 57:29 [3] 8.0 km (7:11 / km)

Didn't enjoy this much today :( The problem was that my mother was supposed to bring my gear for orienteering so I didn't have to carry it with me - I left it by the door for her to pick up and even sent her a reminder text, but she forgot it!! Parents... gosh sometimes there is just nothing you can do.

Anyway so then I had to run in cycling gear which was weird (padded shorts and all), and pretty awful shoes, and also didn't have a proper sports bra... so overall that ended up being quite uncomfortable.

I don't know if that was the only problem too - I just didn't have the enthusiasm today and didn't push hard at all. Some days the motivation isn't there for one reason or another.

But the course was good, I will say that :) and navigation was totally fine also, no problems there.

(Anyway I'm actually not very upset with my mother, these things happen :) I mean you have to cut them some slack after everything they do for you!!)
