Long distance at Waipoapoa. I don't know why, but I had a very negative mindset today... :( I just felt from the beginning that everyone would be faster than me, and there was no point in trying. And then I saw some of the controls on that 1:15,000 map and they were just circles around a sea of little black dots... you couldn't even read the contours underneath! Yes control 4, I am talking about you. So I kind of gave up :( Which is really stupid! Because there is no excuse for not trying to do your best.
Anyway, so the first few controls were ok I guess... number 4 and 5 I made mistakes on though, they were some of the ones in the rock detail. What I should have done instead of despairing was just stopped for a bit to figure out the map as best I could, and then made a decent attempt to hit the control accurately. But instead I just sort of checked out a whole bunch of different rocks in approximately the right area :S 6 and 7 were ok, though I slowed down heaps for number 7. Controls 8 and 9 I was very hesitant navigating to... this is when I started doing that thing where I doubt the control will be where I think it is, and keep stopping and checking the map even though all the features around me are matching up.
Then number 10 I made a bad mistake on :( very bad. Lost probably 4 minutes. I stayed to the right of the stream following some earthbanks, and I thought they were all matching up nicely, but then when I crossed the stream to get to the control, nothing seemed to fit. After some time I realised I was too low, though this took a while because I struggled to read the rocks... was looking for a patch of trees but didn't see them for ages either!
The controls after that were all much the same I guess... just felt like I was slow and was also doubting myself all the time. Chose a bad route to number 21, too much down and up! Was not sensible.
Anyway, when I saw how everyone else did I was a bit surprised, because I wasn't as slow as I thought. Without the stupidity at number 10 and making more of an effort to read the detail I would have done ok. So in conclusion, I need to learn how to snap out of a negative mindset! And I need more practise with 1:15,000 maps!!!
