Orienteering race 1:26:15 [4] *** 8.8 km (9:48 / km)
16c shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Queen's birthday day 2 at White's Line. Not as good as yesterday, again I had a couple of mistakes which cost a few minutes each :( Not good. Thinking about it, most of them occurred because I didn't check my exit direction and really just ran off after the previous control. For example, I ran out of control 2 in kind of the wrong direction and so spent longer slogging through the rough felled area, and ended up on a road perpendicular to the one I wanted to be on. Then my bad mistake at control 9 was because of a similar sort of thing... I didn't check my exit direction and then confused one ridge with a perpendicular one.

Also, I still lose time on the longer legs :( Have to be more aggressive! I know I can run harder on these.

Oh and the other thing that happened today was that I was a lot more tired! The terrain was hard work - my heart just sank when after the looong leg to 7 I turned my map over an saw a very long leg to 8 right through the middle of the felled area! Fortunately I found an unmapped vehicle track to run on for some of it but it was still tough.

That hill on the road to the event centre felt a lot harder after the race than it had beforehand!

Orienteering race 23:00 [5] **** 3.2 km (7:11 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Relay in the afternoon on the Mushroom Rd map in the really intricate area :) It was a two person relay with the women running first, then the men - I was in a team with Darran. It was a brutal sprint up the hill to the start triangle, then we all had a control in a vague area of the map, then dove straight into the detailed part :) I made a mistake at the pivot with Kate and Amber, and also hesitated on a few of the other controls - everything happened so quickly and there were lines going everywhere on the map... I had to stop and make sure I was getting them all in the right order. Then somehow I was out of sync with most of the people on my loop and ended up running a lot of it by myself :( Sad, because I didn't have someone there to push me. But I did see some of the Aussie girls a bit further ahead on my loop so I guess I finished just a bit behind them.

Should have been more accurate but I always find it hard to concentrate on the map when everyone is running so fast!

Orienteering race 1:05:47 [4] *** 8.0 km (8:13 / km)
23c shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Queen's birthday day 1 at Telephone Track I think it was. Had an ok run, there were good and bad parts... Made a mistake at 7 as it was quite vague and couldn't see the group of knolls I was looking for :( In hindsight it would have been better to approach the control from the track to the right, much safer. But I was actually ok for the notorious control 6 which lots of people messed up. Then I had a moment of lost concentration around 14 which meant I went too low and hesitated around there for a while before going up higher to get the control. After 6 I had caught up to Rachel and from then on we were sort of taking the lead back and forth for the rest of the course. There were a few moments where I got ahead and should have got away from her, but some small mistake would allow her to catch up.

Then I went through the spectator control, and to my extreme surprise someone said I was in second place! So then I kind of freaked out and of course I made a mistake, at number 21 :( Went to 22 instead and then didn't use my compass to get back to 21 but got back to it in some roundabout way :( Stupid! Anyway, lost second place and a few minutes because of that. But I still was third so that's a very good result for me :)

Goal for tomorrow - have an even cleaner run! Concentrate 100% of the time - it is in that one moment where you let your mind drift that everything falls apart. Oh and be more aggressive on the long legs - I have a tendency to slow down and hesitate more than I need to.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Warm up, didn't warm down... oops. It was rainy though and I didn't much feel like it.
4 PM

Orienteering race 16:38 [4] 2.4 km (6:56 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talons

Sprint at Massey Campus, Oteha Rohe. It was raining the whole time so the concrete and those wooden slats were very treacherous! That slowed me down a bit. Also I didn't plan ahead very well in this race, I seemed to stop at a lot of the controls to figure out my plan for the next leg... not ideal. Also made a few mistakes going to the wrong side of the building a couple of times :( But ok given the conditions I guess.

I like this map a lot though! Good fun :)

My legs were sore, so the warm up and down were a good idea this time.

Note
(rest day)

No training today... I managed to stay awake all night on the delivery unit! But it was so quiet so it was a bit of a struggle... then heaps of women came in in labour around 4am so I helped with a few deliveries then :) I thought I would be able to stay for teaching in the afternoon but I was so tired - so I left about 11 and slept for 7 hours straight.

Road cycling 33:30 [3]

I wasn't sure whether to go to the hospital this morning as I am mean to be on delivery unit all night. But I thought I should at least make an appearance and maybe go to the neonatal ward round (which was actually really good!). So I'm glad I went :)
12 PM

Road cycling 32:00 [3]

Just stayed for the morning and then cycled home again :) But I didn't manage to get any sleep... and anyway, I had arranged to do some tutoring.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

Warm up through Churchill Park and a bit of Tahuna Torea.

Running intervals 15:00 [5]
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

15 x 30:30s on the Tahuna Torea tracks and the track to Pt England. It was getting a bit dark towards the end but still manageable. My legs were a little tired! To be expected I guess.

Running warm up/down 20:02 [3]
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

Warm down back home along Taniwha, Roberta then Riddell. The pace was still quite good :) I was actually in a hurry though as I had to get back to the hospital... lucky I was fast :)

Running warm up/down 25:00 [3]
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

Warm up and down for the O'Hagan's 5km. I thought it would be a bit colder than it actually was, but the weather was pretty nice.
6 PM

Running race 19:57 [5] 5.0 km (3:59 / km)
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

O'Hagan's 5km race at the waterfront. The course is different again from the last time I did it, lots of road works going on. I was a bit disappointed with the race overall... I think I last ran one around the end of last year and the time was pretty similar (5 seconds faster) and yet I have done a lot of good training in that time... So what does this mean, was all that training for nothing? Why didn't I improve :( :(

The first half was a good speed I guess - reached halfway around 9:30... but this means I slowed down SO MUCH on the second half, though it felt way harder. How do I stop myself from doing that?

Hmm.

Wow, pretty slow this morning :(

Road cycling 32:30 [3]

Felt a little bit stronger riding home today :)

Running 32:08 [3]
shoes: Adidas adistar ride

Recovery run, though I'm not actually sure what I was recovering from... It felt good to run again though! I felt pretty strong. Went down to Dingle Dell to run through there but it was actually quite dark already, so I just ran back home.
