Road cycling 35:13 [3] 13.34 km (2:38 / km) +148m 2:30 / km

Massive headwind, felt like I was going backwards almost. Legs got extremely tired.

Running 50:00 [2] 9.2 km (5:26 / km) +172m 4:58 / km
shoes: New Balance W890 GH2

Ran with my friend Tom again, like last week. It was a very enjoyable run with quite a few hills - we ran around the domain tracks, down Parnell Rd, up Gladstone, down Brighton and up Ayr St. Then through the domain again.

Legs were a bit sore after the weekend (and this morning) and really needed a good stretch.

Strength and conditioning 1:05:00 intensity: (40:00 @0) + (25:00 @1)

Core session at the gym, it was good, but my arms were actually tired from the weekend... I think from pulling myself up hills. Definitely need better arm muscles! Arms seem to work as much as the core muscles in a lot of the exercises.

Then did a fantastic stretching session which helped my calves a lot! Didn't really stretch properly after the races and then sat in a car for 2.5 hours driving home.

Running warm up/down 6:26 [2] 1.14 km (5:39 / km) +15m 5:18 / km

Orienteering race 1:37:57 [3] 8.83 km (11:05 / km) +391m 9:05 / km

What to say about this race... it has put me in a very bad mood and I am in danger of becoming very negative about life in general. First 10 controls went well, a bit of hesitation and indecision but generally ok. However, I was getting frustrated by just how slow I was and not being able to run half the time. Then saw Rachel and Greta at 10 and was then a bit more motivated... but left my orienteering brain behind. Took a dumb route choice to 12 then ended up on the wrong spur - relocated reasonably quickly, but it takes forever to get anywhere in this damn forest so it ended up wasting heaps of time as I had to do a whole extra climb. I knew this was the sort of mistake I should never let happen and yet it did, and I was so so mad at myself. Then Amber caught me and I lost all motivation and had mentally given up. Dragged myself around the rest of the course.

Very unhappy that I let the mistake bother me so much - yeah it was bad, but get over it. No excuses for not doing your best in any part of the race. Should probably focus on all the good things I did in the first 50 or so minutes but am finding this very hard to do right now.

Orienteering race 43:59 [3] 4.23 km (10:24 / km) +241m 8:05 / km

Ok race, felt really tired and slow. It was rainy and muddy and I had no grip on the hills. Was lousy at choosing routes to some of the controls, still scared of climb. I need to get stronger and run like a man.

Orienteering race 25:35 [4] 4.01 km (6:23 / km) +112m 5:36 / km

"Sprint" which was way too long and felt like a summer series race in a very boggy park with some areas of dodgy mapping... Was very tired and running at snail pace, and was also not thinking too much in the future. I need to do a lot more sprint training because I think I've lost the ability to run fast.

Road cycling 33:19 [2] 13.35 km (2:30 / km) +149m 2:22 / km

This was a bit rough... legs were so sore from yesterday, then had a pretty strong headwind up the hill again. Mega slow despite trying to fight the headwind.
3 PM

Running 1:00:02 [3] 11.4 km (5:16 / km) +298m 4:39 / km
shoes: New Balance W890 GH2

Run from uni up 3 volcanoes. This run did not start well - I had pretty bad abdominal pain which kept getting worse and worse as I was going up Mt Eden :( Had to stop at the top and sit down, and was considering giving up the run. But after waiting for a bit, by some miracle it went away. So I continued on the rest of the run :)

Though my legs were still super sore they were actually moving quite well. Also managed to squeeze in about 7 minutes of barefoot running on the domain fields at the end. Wish I could have done more - I love it so much! Did notice after last time that my lower soleus was a bit tired, which apparently happens when you start barefoot running. But after today I feel good :) No niggles at all so far with running so I am praying that it will stay this way!!!
5 PM

Road cycling 29:18 [2] 13.41 km (2:11 / km) +102m 2:06 / km

Felt ok but legs still sore of course. There was this guy riding a bit in front of me - I thought about trying to draft behind him at one point, but then decided to just stay by myself. Then at Mission Bay a car knocked him over :( I stopped for a bit to see if he was ok - I think he was - and there were lots of others around anyway. Could have easily been me... Really have to watch out for those cars turning right in front of you :(

Note

So excited for Whangarei now!!! Can hardly remember the last time I orienteered in Whangarei - it was some random OY years ago. I remember it being fun though!

Legs you have 1 day and a bit to recover so hurry up.

Road cycling 30:36 [2] 13.35 km (2:18 / km) +168m 2:09 / km

I left late today after trying to do some work at home in the morning. Also I was feeling so tired this morning... but then by about 11am I felt really good, so I went to uni. Legs felt strong and this ride was pretty enjoyable :)
5 PM

Cross trainer 15:00 [3] 3.1 km (4:50 / km)

Warm up on the cross trainer... felt harder than it should have been.

Gym 55:00 [1]

Good gym session, I need to get back into this. Started off with core which was great, one of those days when I could really make myself suffer. Then did arms and some leg strengthening, and finished with stretching and rolling.

Went to the doctor today as I want to get my ferritin/iron/haemoglobin checked. She also gave me some good advice about trying to keep my sleeping patterns more consistent. I have been aware that my sleeping can be a bit erratic and insufficient sometimes.... This is probably part of the explanation for why I always seem to be so tired in the mornings these days.
7 PM

Road cycling 27:32 [2] 12.51 km (2:12 / km) +81m 2:08 / km

Home from the gym, legs a lot more tired after squats etc.

Running 55:11 [3] 11.09 km (4:59 / km) +208m 4:33 / km
shoes: New Balance W890 GH2

Glendowie hills run + 10 mins of barefoot running at the end. The hills were tiring, but I managed them better than I have been lately, so I will say that's progress.
