Saturday Jun 30

Running race (Road) 42:38 [5] 3.5 mi (12:10 / mi) +300m 5:59 / km
shoes: Asics (pair 3)
Leg 30 of the relay. After getting up at 2:15 am, so the first member of our team could start at 4:15am (an hour earlier than we were expected to be at the start of leg 25 given our original schedule), I was running at around 9am. This leg was up a hill that got steeper and steeper, past old gold mines, and ended with a mile downhill into Virginia City. Definitely my favorite of the three legs I ran.

Virginia City is an old mining town, with an old main street, and is also associated with Mark Twain. It was a fitting place for the final van exchange of the race (each team had two vans with 6 runners each - or in our case 5 runners).

Our first van stayed behind for a bit to watch our faster team (which had started later), do their exchange.

Friday Jun 29

Running race (Road) 53:29 [4] * 5.5 mi (9:44 / mi) vdot: 31.7
shoes: Asics (pair 3)
Leg 2 of the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey. This is a 178 mile relay course with 12 people running 36 legs. However, due to the Angora fire near S Lake Tahoe (over the Fallen Leaf Lake orienteering map), the middle 12 legs were cut, and the race restarted at leg 25 around the time the teams would have got there. However, as two members of our team dropped out, I got to run 3 legs anyway. I was in a team with my old running club from Houston: Bayou City Road Runners.

This leg started off along a bike path by the Truckie River; on the western edge of Reno, Nevada; but most of it was along a road with no shade by Interstate 80 (punctuated by another short bike path). Slightly uphill.

Didn't push myself too hard, as I have to run another leg in about 3.5 hours!

NB - The race had a staggered start based on expected finish time - so even on this early leg I didn't see many other people.
Running race (Road) 43:17 [4] 4.7 mi (9:12 / mi) vdot: 33.5
shoes: Asics (pair 3)
Leg 6 of the Reno-Taho Odyssey (relay). This was a leg I was supposed to be doing. Now in California, the leg was mostly slight downhill by Boca Reservoir, but into a strong wind. Hot.

Tuesday Jun 26

Running 48:54 [4] 5.2 mi (9:24 / mi)
shoes: Asics (pair 3)
Usual 2 laps of Washington Park (clockwise), 24:00 and 24:54. Humid.
Note
The route of next weekend's Reno-Tahoe relay has been modified due to the wildfires. Awaiting news of where we'll actually be running (well, we know the first and last bits are the same!).
