Running race (High Altitude) 5:34:08 [4] 13.32 mi (25:04 / mi) +2382m 10:01 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend
Pikes Peak Ascent. This is basically one long uphill up Pikes Peak from Manitou Springs, a total of 7185 ft of ascent over 13.3 miles (more ascent than going up Scafell Pike (highest mountain in England) from sea level twice!). It's actually more of a hike than a run, but I've put it as running as it's a race.
Met Bob Ward and Doug Berling (both RMOC) at the start although I never saw either of them after the first few minutes (they both were faster than me). The first 1/2 mile or so was flat through Manitou Springs, followed by a mile uphill on a road past the bottom of the Pikes Peak Cog Railroad. The rest of the race was on trail.
First came a brutal steep uphill, known as the W's (due to all the switchbacks). This part of the trail was so crowded it was impossible to go very fast, which was good as it forced you to save energy for later in the race.
The trail continued up for a bit past the top of the W's, and at some point here I actually found myself alone for about 15 seconds!. Then quite a long flat section with even a few down hills before the climb resumed again to reach Barr Camp.
The next section (to treeline) was a long steep uphill - it was almost back to the crowdedness of the W's. Finally a long climb above treeline to the summit. I started feeling the effects of the altitude about 1/4 of the way from treeline to the summit, but generally fared better than on the Mount Evans Ascent in June, and definitely better than some people (although I lost a lot of places in this section - and definitely lost people I'd been with since some time before Barr Camp).
For the record, the winner (Matt Carpenter) took 2:12:56 - he went on to win the Marathon (up and down) the next day.

Walking 35:49 [2] 2.6 mi (13:47 / mi)
shoes: Asics (pair 3)
One loop round Washington Park counter clockwise, whilst everyone else ran round twice clockwise. Did the loop in 35:49 which is only about 11 minutes slower than my usual running speed. It rained fairly heavily off and on - the raindrops were cold in comparison to the air temperature.

Note
Taper week - It's forecast to be record high temperatures this week so it's good that I'm not going to be pushing myself at all.
