Saturday May 24

Event: US Team Trials

Orienteering race (Sprint) 34:04 [4] *** 3.49 km (9:46 / km) +83m 8:43 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend
DVO A meet + WRE - sprint at Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA. Although I'd run on campuses before (Rice, University of Calgary, CU Boulder), this was the first time I'd run on one with so many passage, steps etc - i.e. places you could easily get blocked. I actually found I quite enjoyed it - needing to to make quick decisions even at my running pace. Mostly downhill course helped the pace, if not my speed. Only real bobble was right at the very end, I saw the finish banners and so naturally went to the end of them thinking it was the last control - it was the finish. Several others made the same mistake.

Blue Sprint - Splits

Thursday May 22

Cycling 18:19 [3] 3.87 mi (4:43 / mi)
Commute. Windy on the way home.
I actually forgot to write this down yesterday, so I've split the total between the two days.

Wednesday May 21

Cycling 18:18 [3] 3.87 mi (4:43 / mi)
Commute

Tuesday May 20

Cycling 18:32 [2] 3.86 mi (4:48 / mi)
Commute

Monday May 19

Cycling 17:46 [2] 3.8 mi (4:40 / mi)
Commute
Note
Looking at the results from yesterday shows why you should never think about how others are doing whilst on the course. Others the same standard as me took comparable lengths of time, and I beat some who should have beaten me by a long way.

Sunday May 18

Event: RMOC White Ranch

Orienteering race 2:32:32 [3] *** 7.7 km (19:49 / km) +545m 14:38 / km
shoes: Integrators pair 2
RMOC - White Ranch - Red Course. Not the greatest performance in the world! The first control was OK, although it was a bit of a struggle up a very steep hill. On no 2 I got confused in the boulders west of (before) the control - thought I'd overshot, and lost 10 minutes (had to relocate from a trail way above the control).
From here on I spent a lot of time unable to distinguish between boulders, cliffs and bare rock (and there were no heights of anything on the control descriptions, which wouldn't be an issue if the control was on the only rock feature in the area, but the rock features were everywhere). Sometimes I'd arrive in the circle, on the feature and still waste time looking for the control (in one case this was because the control was on the wrong cliff).
Plus I had no energy, it was too hot, and I get dehydrated towards the end. The course was rather physical for red - more a blue course (as evidenced by the more than 1.5 hour winning time).
Note
My prediction about the courses for the controls I saw yesterday was correct.
