Saturday Aug 16

Note
Pikes Peak Ascent
Running race 3:14:22 [4] 9.32 mi (20:52 / mi) +1500m 8:38 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend
Pikes Peak Ascent. Like most of the wave 2 runners I got turned around between Barr Camp and A-Frame - this is to the point where I was turned round. Weather was cold and wet - just like Britain (!) - apparently higher up it was brutal. I'd have to have been at a pace approx 1.5 hours faster than my last years 5:30 time to have been allowed to finish! I was slightly slower than last year, but given the conditions wasn't that bad.

Splits at aid stations (cumulative in round brackets) [2007 in square brackets]

Ruxton Road 24:59 (24:59) [24:03]
Incline 26:59 (51:56) [26:22]
No Name Creek 31:49 (1:23:45) [31:17]
Bob's Road 22:58 (1:46:43) [22:09]
Barr Camp 42:31 (2:29:13) [40:39]
To 4 miles to go sign (where I turned round) 45:08 (3:14:22)

Walking 2:55:55 [2] 9.32 mi (18:52 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend
Walking back down after the turn around. Stopped at Barr Camp to put on some drier clothes (which I had originally saved for above A-Frame). The sun came out for a bit below Barr Camp!

Note
Apparently the conditions today on the Pikes Peak Ascent were the worst in over 40 years (ever?). I didn't get above tree line, so didn't have more than cold and rain, but those who got higher got snow, wind, cold etc - having to go down was apparently vastly better than carrying on through the last few miles.

Walking 35:24 [1] 2.6 mi (13:37 / mi)
shoes: Asics (pair 4)
Walk counter-clockwise round Washington Park as both recovery from the US Orienteering Championships (last weekend) and a taper for Pikes Peak (next weekend). Met Chris half way round who was recovering from a half ironman, so we walked together.

Monday Aug 11

Cycling 24:18 [2] 4.52 mi (5:21 / mi)
Commute - tired.
Note
My left ankle was still hurting this morning and making me limp. However, by the time I left work, I could only feel the problem if I really stretched it.

Sunday Aug 10

Orienteering race 1:46:42 [4] **** 10.78 km (9:54 / km) +220m 8:59 / km
(injured) shoes: Integrators pair 2
US Champs day 2. Was a bit nervous about my left ankle, but icing it last night helped, and it didn't really bother me during the competition.

The first part of the race was similar to yesterday. Later there were lots of wide open flat areas to cross, which meant that there were periods of relatively dead running. This terrain was rather too fast for my liking.

I started off with JP and Neil Barlow starting 8 and 12 minutes behind me respectively. I overshot no 7 (my first big mistake of the weekend), when both of them passed me. This made me nervous on no 8. At no 11 I couldn't really make sense of the contours on the map, I was in a re-entrant instead of on a spur, until I saw Greg Balter and Mike Minium leaving the control. From here until no 18 I could often see Mike gradually getting further and further away.

The last 3 controls were within full sight of the finish, which made me a bit nervous. Like many people I made a mistake on the last one. Later stood at the finish watching other people making mistakes.
Control Pickup 1:00:00 [1] ****
(injured) shoes: Integrators pair 2
Picked up controls in the NW corner of the map (where the courses had started) in the rain.
Note
(injured)
My ankle wasn't too bad when running today, but hurts this evening.
