Orienteering race 1:05:52 [4] *** 5.3 km (12:25 / km) +791ft 10:07 / km
22c shoes: Innov8s

US Middle Distance Orienteering Championships - Carter Caves State Park, KY. Lots of short legs near the start, followed by more limestone. Vegetation easier than yesterday. Even colder than yesterday at the start, but warmed up more quickly. Chest hurting a bit, but didn't significantly affect my running.

To the long O start

Orienteering race 2:14:42 [4] *** 12.52 km (10:46 / km) +1985ft 8:40 / km
15c shoes: Innov8s

US Long Orienteering Championships, Carter Caves State Park, KY. A race in 2 parts - the first part, lots of long legs through some (sometimes) nasty vegetation including greenbriar. The second (shorter) part through more detailed limestone features, a bit like what we'd experienced in the model event yesterday.
I messed up number 1, and couldn't make sense of the contours around number 7 (there seemed to be an unmapped flat area to the NW of the control). With Ted Good 9-10, but I went too far north going into the control and he got ahead. Made a bit of a mess leaving 11, followed by a nasty climb up to 12. Otherwise a clean run. My chest was hurting a bit again towards the end.
Cold at the start, but didn't take long to warm up.
I saw someone drinking from one of the gallon water bottles at the first water point - yuck!

Hiking 1:28:43 [1] 2.11 mi (42:03 / mi) +463ft 34:49 / mi
shoes: Innov8s

On the model map at Carter Caves - lots of limestone cliffs, bottomless pits, plus a small caves and a natural bridge.
3 PM

Orienteering race (Urban) 28:14 [5] *** 4.3 km (6:34 / km) +335ft 5:52 / km
23c shoes: Brooks road pair 2

US Sprint O Championships - Morehead State University Campus, Morehead, KY. Typical Campus sprint. No problems, except one where I went along a dead end passageway, and another where I didn't see the gap in a wall (obscured by the line connecting two controls). Cold - started snowing as we were leaving the event.
GPS tracks look to be a bit screwy. If they're to be believed, at one point I scaled a 10m wall!.
