Orienteering race 2:46:25 [4] ***** 11.89 km (14:00 / km) +1499ft 11:45 / km
shoes: Innov8s

NAOC Long, at Burnt Mountain, Hanover, NH. Well, I went to all the controls in order, in less than the time limit. That much at least was an achievement. Actually I only had real problems with 4 controls:
3 - couldn't decipher the map around the control.
7 - this was a long leg, and I was doing fine until an attackpoint about 3/4 of the way through the leg. But then I couldn't find a marsh. And eventually I found a trail and couldn't work out which trail on the map it was. I somehow managed to relocate off the bare rock at the top of the just west of the control, but still can't work out how I got there.
12 - went past the control thinking it wasn't mine, and then was trying to make features on the map round the control match the ground to the west of it. A woman told me she'd disturbed some yellowjackets.
13 - ????? - was going to go to the road to the north to relocate, but eventually found some features around 14 so went there to relocate.

With a few possible exceptions (eg Hickory Run in PA) this is probably the hardest area I've orienteered in. I've been in terrain a bit like this in the Lake District in England, but there there's been no trees, so you can actually see the rocks in the distance. Here was technical and poor visibility. I haven't been as uncertain of my location as I was towards the end of 7 in a long time, or wandered as aimlessly as I was on 13.

NAOC Middle at Oak Hill (Storrs Pond), Hanover, NH. Much less accurate than I would have liked (although my GPS tracks don't always suggest that).

Apex. Went counter clockwise for a change, so I could do Grubstake in the light. Unfortunately this meant going down Enchanted Forest as it was getting dark, which was a bit scary - I could hear coyotes howling, plus at least one case of an animal running through the undergrowth by the creek. Actually saw a raccoon, and a rabbit.
Used my new headlamp from about the top of Enchanted Forest down.
