Friday Feb 29

Road Run 29:55 [3] 3.57 mi (8:22 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
S on 66 and back. 25F with a breeze from the south. Cold, but better than the treadmill.

Wednesday Feb 27

Treadmill intervals 45:00 5.44 mi (8:15 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
6 x 3 min @ 7:03 with 2:00 recovery plus warm up and cool down. A long time on the treadmill.

Sunday Feb 24

Trail Run 1:38:51 [3] * 9.92 mi (9:58 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
Trail run at Pine Bush Preserve, starting from the Discovery Center. About 2 or 3 inches of snow on the trails so it was a bit slippery in places (probably should've used the YakTrax). Mostly sunny with temperatures in the low 30's so a fine day for running. Spent quite a bit of time on the west side of the road, exploring some of the "unofficial" trails which branch off the official loop. On the east side of the road, the northernmost loop (the yellow trail) was closed so they can clear cut the area in the interest of habitat restoration (removing "invasives" to restore the scrub oak and pitch pine which is supposed to be growing there). Loving nature with chainsaws and heavy equipment?

Saturday Feb 23

Walking (Snowshoe Hike) 1:35:00 ** 3.1 mi (30:39 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
Snowshoe hike with Janet at Hand Hollow Preserve (in the part I had never been in). One big climb (~100m) on an old road, and then wandered around in a generally flat area. A nice pond near the top and generally open woods. Trails have been streamered in the area but not yet cleared, so we did the exercise of trying to locate the next streamer to keep following where the trails might eventually go. Got to a few dead ends and also bushwacked a bit (actually it was almost all bushwacking since there has been no work done to clear the trails). Low 30's and overcast with about 3" of snow on the ground (so we didn't really need the snowshoes).

Thursday Feb 21

Road Run 37:40 [3] 4.45 mi (8:28 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
66N to the gas plant (Tennessee Gas Pipeline pumping station) and back. Cold (22F), but clear and dry so I opted for the roads instead of the treadmill. A good decision.

Tuesday Feb 19

Treadmill tempo 38:15 4.5 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Tempo run 2.5mi @ 7:35 pace, plus a mile each to warm up and cool down. This was mentally tough but I did what I had planned to. I guess reading the scroll along the bottom of the screen on CNN isn't enough distraction. Thought about reading a map while running on the treadmill but that would probably be a recipe for disaster.

Sunday Feb 17

Trail Run 1:31:45 [3] 9.41 mi (9:45 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
Trail run at Camp Saratoga in Wilton Wildlife Preserve (N of Saratoga Springs). Trails were packed snow, "groomed for skiing" but firm enough that I was leaving no footprints. Several small hills, some steep. Temperature in the low 30's with some breeze which wasn't really noticeable in the woods. Finished just in time as it started to sleet and rain.

Friday Feb 15

Treadmill 32:10 [3] 3.55 mi (9:03 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Treadmill - played with the incline to keep from being totally bored. Was still bored, but falling temps and increasing wind with snow and ice outside made me wimp out. Didn't need a slide rule since the treadmills display both mph and min/mi.

Thursday Feb 14

Other (Downhill Skiing) 1:00:00 [2] *
Skiing with my Valentine at Gore Mtn. Conditions were quite good since they had gotten 8 - 10" of new snow and not the sleet/rain/slop mix enjoyed further to the south and east. There may have been a bit of sleet on the lower part of the mountain since there was some crusty stuff on ungroomed trails, but once we figured that out we stayed up high and it was great. A pretty good workout for the legs since I skied a bunch of moguls and glades.

Tuesday Feb 12

Treadmill intervals 42:10 5.05 mi (8:20 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Intervals - 8 x 2:00 @ 7:03 pace with 1:30 recovery. Plus warm up and cool down. This may be the first time I've ever done more than 5 miles on the treadmill.

Sunday Feb 10

Orienteering 1:25:30 [3] *** 10.46 km (8:10 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Orienteering in da Bronx. HVO event at Van Cortlandt Park. A score-O with 29 controls worth a total of 1790 points with a 90 minute time limit. Got 1050 points (16 controls) plus 200 bonus points for finding the MD's compass which he had dropped while hanging controls (in was right under the marker at one of the more remote controls). Map is 18 years old so vegetation wasn't accurate and there were many new, unmapped trails. Was sloppy on several controls and even gave up on two of them. Still, it was good to get on a map in February in the Northeast (without skis). Weather was good - low 40's with the sun out, but a bit breezy. Hit snow squalls on both the drive down and back as a strong cold front moved in, so we lucked out.

Saturday Feb 9

Road Run 39:39 [3] 4.57 mi (8:39 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Syring, Alb Tpke, Jefferson Hill, Bacchus, Pratt, 66S. Very light rain and then some snow. 35F. About half of loop is on unpaved roads, which were a little sloppy but firm.

Thursday Feb 7

Treadmill intervals 40:00 4.66 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
3 x 3min + 2 x 2min @ 7:03 pace (alternating 3 and 2) plus 1 min @~6:50 with 2 min recovery between.

min/sq km value approaching infinity, using the earth surface as the reference coordinate system (i.e. neglecting the traveling through space thing - which, now that I think about it, would create a point-to-point path and thus the area would be undefined). If there's a practical value to calculating time per unit area circumscribed by a workout, I haven't figured it out yet. :-)

Wednesday Feb 6

Road Run 36:57 [3] 4.28 mi (8:38 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
66N, Albany Turnpike, back via Howes, Shaker Museum Road. 34F and damp (but not raining). I needed to get out after two days of travel.

Sunday Feb 3

Trail Run 1:27:27 [3] 8.59 mi (10:11 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
Albany Pine Bush from Madison Avenue Extension. Trails mostly snow and ice covered with occasional "sand-mud", which had a quite different feel to it. I think the ground was still solid an inch or so below the mud so the ground was initially very soft and then solid - not easy to run on. Stayed on the marked trails in the preserve but also did a couple of miles on mtn bike paths which are not in the preserve (although it's not clear to me who owns that land, I just hope they don't develop it). Nice day, low 40's with a bit of sun.

Saturday Feb 2

Road Run 37:10 [3] 4.15 mi (8:57 / mi)
The "south block" clockwise. Richmond and Bashford roads were a mix of mud, ice and slush - a bit of HTFU training. The ice was the best surface to run on since it was (mostly) sanded. 35F and overcast.
