Orienteering 1:00:00 [1] ***

Hang some bags, hang around, take down some bags, count the bags, go home. Sleep.

Orienteering 20:00 [2] *** 2.0 km (10:00 / km) +30m 9:18 / km
shoes: NB 804 - Size 10

Got a report that number 7 on Green Y was on the ground and had been rehung. Walked/jogged from BeaverDam Road, down the cliff line to the trail to find a bag hanging right beside the trail about 50m from Green Y number 7 (also on Blue, Red Y and Green X - #254, the cliff just ater crossing the swamp). Turns out that the bag was one from Day 1 which had been dropped during pick-up. 254 was fine and still hung right where it was supposed to be. Thanks Valerie for finding the rogue bag (and for all your other help). Hung around for a while watching people visit the control and then climbed back up the cliff line and back to the car.

Hang some bags, hang some streamers, put out some water.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1] ***

Hanging bags and other stuff. Actually spent about 5 hrs at Thacher and Pinnacle, but no point inflating the training hours.
What a spectacular day - 60 and sunny. And that's the forecast through the weekend, so no rain to deal with! No significant leaf out yet.

Road Run 28:31 [3] 3.3 mi (8:38 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #5

Rt 66N? Found this time on my watch (associated with the date) so I must have gone for a run and just forgotten to record it. Must've been focussed on something else. (added 5/4/06)

Note

This A-meet stuff is starting to dig into my workout time. There's a lot of detail involved getting 124 flags hung in the right place at the right time!

Trail Run 1:09:26 [3] 7.0 mi (9:55 / mi)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

Trail Run at Hand Hollow Preserve. On trails, logging roads and some through the woods. Lots of water on the trails and some occasional mud. Poured rain most of the day but it had tapered off some by the time I ran (4pm). The sun actually came out for a few minutes near the end of the run - the only sun the whole weekend.
Almost went to the Five Ponds event but wimped out when I saw 40s and pouring rain - gotta stay healthy for next weekend.

Other 1:00:00 [1]

Lugging water out for the A-meet. Also streamered the Day 1 white and yellow courses. Low 40's and rain. Cold, but sitll a great day to be in the woods (based on the belief that any day in the woods is better than a day not in the woods). One week to go and things appear to be mostly under control.
Thought about the irony of competitive orienteering: We orienteer because we like to be in the woods but when we race, we try to get out of the woods as quickly as possible.

Road Run 34:21 [3] 4.0 mi (8:35 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #5

Rt 32 west and back. Ran a bit faster than intended.

Road Run intervals (hills) 12:50 [5] 1.6 mi (8:01 / mi) +120m 6:30 / mi
shoes: NB 878 - #5

Up the hill on Pratt road (see 3/29 entry). 4 x ~0.33 mi (with 25m climb) + 2 x ~0.15 (with 10m climb) with jog back down for recovery. Splits 2:39, 2:42, 2:42, 2:47, 1:01, 1:00.

Road Run 40:41 [3] 4.3 mi (9:28 / mi)

Warm up (1mi), Cool down (2mi), and the recovery stuff.

Tuesday Apr 18, 2006 #

Road Run 26:57 [3] 3.0 mi (8:59 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #5

Shaker Museum Rd to Thruway Bridge and back.

Sunday Apr 16, 2006 #

Trail Run 1:40:25 [3] 9.0 mi (11:09 / mi)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

At the bird santuary (officially the Wilson M Powell Wildlife Sanctuary, owned by the Alan Devoe Bird Club) and environs. The "environs" is all the adjacent, generously "posted" land. There are lots of trails which obviously get used by more than just the land owners. If the owners actually live on the land, I haven't gone far enough yet to find their houses (may have to run as far as a large city near New Jersey).
Distance is estimated. Upper 50's and a bit breezy, but nice for running. Saw a turkey, a deer and maybe a turkey vulture or two.

Saturday Apr 15, 2006 #

Road Run 28:36 [3] 3.2 mi (8:56 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #5

Jefferson Hill Road loop ccw. Sunny, upper 60's but felt pretty warm. Hilly

Thursday Apr 13, 2006 #

Road Run 31:00 [3] 3.6 mi (8:37 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #5

Rt 66S, Richmond Rd to Bashford and back. Half paved, half dirt.

Wednesday Apr 12, 2006 #

Road Run 35:48 [3] 4.0 mi (8:57 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #5

Rt. 66N, Albany Tpke - out and back. Legs tired - either from the weekend or from taking two days off (due to a surprise trip yesterday for work down to WCOC land).

Orienteering race 58:51 [5] *** 6.35 km (9:16 / km)
spiked:12/14c shoes: VJ Falcons

Day 2 of NEOC Spring Rock Festival. Wolf Den map at Mashamoquet Brook SP. A very good run with less than 2 minutes of errors. Lots of open woods and trail running early and late in the course. More mountain laurel and techincal stuff in the middle. Fun course. Ran pretty hard. Calves were tight early in the run but loosened up after a few controls.

Orienteering race 45:51 [4] *** 3.6 km (12:44 / km) +105m 11:07 / km
spiked:12/16c shoes: VJ Falcons

Day 1 of NEOC Spring Rock Festival. A nice middle distance course set by Pete Bundschuh. Lots of short, technical legs. Map at 1:7500.
Did well through the first 10 controls except for some brief hesitations to make sure I was reading the map correctly. Sloppy approach to 11 from a very strong attack point. Drifted off the line and wasn't watching features on 12 - lost 3-4 minutes. Misread that I needed to climb 3 contours to get to 15. About 6 minutes errors total. 5th in M50, 10th overall on Green X.

Trail Run 49:19 [3] * 8.5 km (5:48 / km)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 10

At Thacher, mostly on trails but a little in the woods. Was supposed to meet Bill Jameson (vetter for the A-meet) to check a few points but due to a communication mix-up we were both there but at different times. Oops. We've got evrything figured out though. A fine April day, 38F with snow flurries. :-) Plus some snow on the ground. It was warmer in January! Ran along the (big) cliff - could seen the Green Mountains (but they were white).

Sunday Apr 2, 2006 #

Road Run 32:31 [3] 3.5 mi (9:17 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #5

Syring Rd., Albany Tpke out and back. Legs tired from the last two days of orienteering. Very nice day - upper 50's and sunny.

Note

Finalized the courses for the Short and Long Champs today. Distance and climb data should be on the website in a day or two.

Orienteering race 1:33:47 [4] *** 7.1 km (13:13 / km) +250m 11:14 / km
spiked:21/23c shoes: VJ Falcons

April Fool's Score-O at Brooksvale (WCOC). Got 22 out of 26 controls plus the Bonus control (actually, I got to the feature the bonus control was supposed to be on but the bag was hung on a parallel feature). Four minutes overtime but the penalty was only 1 point per minute (controls were worth 5, 10, or 20 points). Nice day in the woods though a bit warm (60's). Since it was April Fool's Day several of the controls used unconventional control locations or bag placements (on top of 3m boulder, 0.1m boulder). Fun and good orienteering practice. Only the second time I'd been on this map so there was very little familiar terrain.
