EMPO event at Kinns Road

Orienteering race 1:08:44 [4] *** 5.0 km (13:45 / km)
spiked:16/23c shoes: VJ Falcons 2

EMPO local event at Kinns Road Park. A less than stellar performance, due in part to a map which is a bit flaky in places. Also, a couple of the controls were not hung on what I think was circled on the map - a difference of opinion between me and the course setter. Lots of controls since there is a heavy trail network. A good course in spite of the map. And a gorgeous day, 70's with low humidity and sunny. Forerunner measured 6.66km (and climb of over 800m - I don't think so!).

Road Run intervals 36:48 intensity: (28:09 @3) + (8:39 @5) 4.34 mi (8:29 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

5 x 0.25 mi with 0.25 mi recovery. On the roads, using the Forerunner to measure the distances (with the convenient "Distance Alert" feature). 66N , Bacchus Rd, Pratt Rd, 66S. Cooler than yesterday but still a bit muggy - in the 70's. And the FDF's were out, but not in great abundance. No need for tacky blue hats.

Splits: 1:49 (part uphill, actually 0.26 mi), 1:37, 1:39, 1:45 (uphill), 1:49 (uphill). Target pace was ~1:40. Average recovery time was 2:20.

Trail Run 56:17 [3] * 5.05 mi (11:09 / mi) +200m 9:55 / mi
shoes: NB 809

From Olivia's Overlook parking area on Richmond-Lenox Road. Burbank Trail loop plus a foray on some unmapped mountain bike trails for about 1.5 mi. Very nice trails on the ridge running NE-SW to the west of Lenox, MA. Quite well maintained but with plenty of rocks and roots. The mountain laurel was in full bloom. Warm and muggy (low 80's). Climb is a conservative estimate - from the parking area to the highest point is about 150m climb and there's lots of other up and down. Found a nice overlook to the east at the end of one of the mtn bike trails.

Orienteering race 32:04 [5] *** 2.35 km (13:39 / km) +140m 10:31 / km
spiked:7/11c shoes: VJ Falcons

Sprint A on Ratlum Mtn map. A very physical course (thick woods, lots of climb). Significant errors on three controls with some additional route choice and/or execution errors on other legs. Probably could've been about 5 min faster. Nice course by Charlie. Now all that's needed is an infestation of laurel weevils.

Orienteering race 24:04 [4] *** 2.1 km (11:28 / km) +110m 9:05 / km
spiked:7/7c shoes: VJ Falcons

Sprint B at Ratlum Mtn. A very good run (good enough to be the fastest of the day on the course!). Found all the indistinct trails I was looking for and only got delayed a bit by vegetation on one leg (6-7). Another nice course by Charlie. And the weather was just about perfect - sunny and in the 60's with a breeze to keep the bugs away. And a great BBQ by WCOC. Thanks to Rhonda and Charlie for hosting us.

Road Run 27:53 intensity: (25:53 @3) + (2:00 @5) 3.32 mi (8:24 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

Rt 66N to Pitts Rd and back. Did about 8 "power pole to power pole" pickups on the way back. 65F, partly cloudy and breezy - first full day of Summer(?).

Thursday Jun 21, 2007 #

Note

Thunderstorms started just as I was about to go out to run - ate dinner instead. Bad Glen.

Tuesday Jun 19, 2007 #

Trail Run 41:17 [3] 4.03 mi (10:15 / mi)
shoes: NB 809

Trails at Kennedy Park. Quite muggy.

Sunday Jun 17, 2007 #

Orienteering race 1:20:38 [4] *** 6.4 km (12:36 / km) +230m 10:41 / km
spiked:11/15c shoes: VJ Falcons

Red course at Paugussett SF (WCOC). Good run on a hot day (80's and sunny). About 5 minutes of errors spread across several controls. Focussed on keeping map contact, especially through the technical areas (of which there were plenty). Biggest errors were due to being distracted by other people - need to work on this. Very nice course by Dave Webber.

Walking (Hiking) 3:45:00 [2] ** 7.1 mi (31:41 / mi)
shoes: NB 809

Hike at Moreau Lake SP checking out the western part of the park for possible O-mapping (we already have aerial photos). Terrain is pretty nice - mix of beech and oak forest with summertime visibility of 70 - 100m along with very open hemlock areas. Some detailed contour areas (glacial) with lots of rock features throughout (but not real rocky underfoot). Could be fast but challenging. It also has some pretty good views of the southern Adirondacks and the Hudson River. The area is labeled as the "Palmertown Range" on the USGS Gansevoort (NY) Quadrangle. http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=43.2289&lon=-7...

The only problem is one of accessibility (and A-meet logistics). The area is on a plateau with about a 500 foot climb to access it. The only road which goes significantly up the hill is the one to a medium security prison located south of the State Park land. Trails access the plateau, but would a bus ride followed by a 1.2k walk to start with 150m of climb be OK?

Road Run intervals 8:22 [5] 1.25 mi (6:42 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

Road intervals. 5 X 0.25mi targeting ~1:40 pace with 0.25mi recoveries. Splits: 1:33 (downhill), 1:40, 1:43, 1:47 (uphill), 1:39. Used the Forerunner to measure distances. Recovery times were 2:23 +/- 4 sec.

Road Run 26:20 [3] 2.91 mi (9:03 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

Warmup, cooldown, recoveries. Ran on 66S with a run up the Richmond Road hill for the fourth interval. Nice day: 70F and mostly sunny.

Trail Run 43:49 [3] ** 3.47 mi (12:38 / mi)
shoes: NB 809

Beebe Hill SF - ran to "No Bottom Pond" on trails, then circumnavigated the pond, which was mostly a bushwack, and then took trails back to the car. The pond is quite a bit larger than shown on the USGS topo due to beaver activity along the stream draining the pond. Much of the "trail" is a woods road which is mostly covered with high grass so the going was tough. Ran into a few thick areas while off the trail - O-clothes would have been more suitable than the shorts and singlet I was wearing. Couldn't take the trail route back I had intended because the trail was flooded so just doubled back the way I came. Overcast and 70's but quite humid. Interesting area around the pond with some karst and some 5m high cliffs - need to explore beyond the cliffs to see what's there.

Orienteering race 22:36 [5] *** 2.51 km (9:00 / km)
spiked:7/10c shoes: VJ Falcons

Sprint A at Crandalls. Very nice woods. Sunny and in the 70's. A bit sloppy with the compass on a couple of controls. Forerunner said I covered 3.13km.

Orienteering race 24:53 [5] *** 2.62 km (9:30 / km)
spiked:7/8c shoes: VJ Falcons

Sprint B at Crandalls. Made errors mid-route on three of the legs but was OK near the controls. Went to the cliffs south of 5 before getting it right. Another nice course. Measured 3.43km with the Forerunner.

Orienteering race 53:41 [4] *** 4.44 km (12:05 / km)
spiked:11/14c shoes: VJ Falcons

Green course at Crandalls. Started at a more moderate pace since I had already "sprinted" over 5km. Picked it up towards the end since I was visiting controls I had already been to on the sprints (but mostly from different directions). Very fine area up on top of the hill (controls 4 - 7) with lots of detail and open woods. Lost about 3 minutes on #3 which was in a non-field-checked area (so I should've been more deliberate than I was). Lost a minute or so each on #2 and #12 being overconfident since I'd already visited the sites (and had spiked #2 twice!). Missed splits towards the end since the Forerunner was full - I guess the message I was getting to delete old splits meant something (like the "check engine" light?). Forerunner measured 5.5km.

Other 1:00:00 [2]

Cutting, splitting, and moving firewood. Some rare upper body and core work - if only I did this two or three times a week. Warm, but not as hot as last weekend. About 3 hours actual time.

Thursday Jun 7, 2007 #

Road Run 35:33 [3] 4.2 mi (8:28 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7

66N, Pratt Rd (big hill), Bacchus, 66S. First road run in a while. Wimped out the last few days - was traveling and just didn't get up early to run in the morning even though the opportunity was there.

Orienteering race 56:07 [5] *** 6.1 km (9:12 / km)
spiked:13/15c shoes: VJ Falcons

Red course at EMPO local event at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. More of a long orange course, since that's all the map will allow. Plus I've set courses here a few times and revised the map a couple of years ago, adding a few of the features which were used as control sites today. Lots of trail running and not very much climb but plenty of effort needed to cross the rough open areas. Overcast and quite muggy. Rained after I was done. Actual distance covered was 7.8km per the Forerunner.

Orienteering 38:52 [3] *** 4.1 km (9:29 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons

Control pickup at Five Rivers. Ran/jogged most of the time, which got interesting by the time I had a jug of water and trash from a water stop, three epunch stands and a bag of control flags. Raining lightly, but fairly warm. Mostly on trails. Distance is Forerunner distance - I didn't run sub-10 min/km picking up controls!

Other 1:00:00 [2]

Running the chainsaw cutting up a couple of trees which came down in a "locally heavy" thunderstorm last Thursday. One hickory which has been dead for quite some time and a cherry which was still alive - both good (free) firewood. The hickory is about 24" in diameter and I'm still about 12' from the base - may not go any further. Not sure this really counts as training, other than good practice sweating (it was sunny and 80's). Actual time was about 2.5hrs and included moving the cut pieces into a somewhat organized pile.
