Sunday Jun 29 | ||
| Event: WCOC BBQ, Sprints, Meeting at DeWeese Farm | ||
| Orienteering race 27:29 [4] *** 2.49 km (11:02 / km) | ||
| spiked:10/12c shoes: VJ Falcons 2 | ||
| Sprint B at Ratlum Mtn. Quite warm and humid, plenty of thick vegetation. Missed low on #3, off-line and short on #11, slightly off on a few others but read the terrain to correct. Probably could've been 2 minutes faster. Forerunner measured 3.16km. | ||
| Orienteering race 32:21 [3] *** 1.66 km (19:29 / km) +95m 15:09 / km | ||

| Sprint A at Ratlum Mtn. More thick stuff and some lousy navigation, plus a mental error. Thunderstorm started while I was out - the rain felt good though. Totally missed on #4 and #10 and bailed out to trails beyond them to relocate. Staying on a bearing in thick vegetation is not one of my strengths. Missed #2, but I think the map might be off in that area. Did a 180 out of #8 (which is about the time it started raining hard, so that's my excuse). Spiked #11 then proceeded directly to the finish, skipping #12 - Doh! Noticed I only had 11 splits and figured it out, so went and punched 12 and then the finish box again. That added about 2 minutes to an already atrocious performance. Oh well. Forerunner measured 2.76km, so I covered a bunch of extra ground.
AOWN - Almost too AOWN. As I was taking my shoes off at the car, lightening struck way too close. Fortunately I was mostly in the car (which may have acted as a Faraday cage) but I felt a pretty good jolt from the car to the back of my leg, which was hanging out of the car and may have been on the ground. No lasting damage and could've been a lot worse. Yikes!
Friday Jun 27 | ||
| Trail Run 39:10 [3] 4.09 mi (9:34 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| Easyish run at Hand Hollow. Started from the upper (western) parking lot so the first half is generally downhill and the second half isn't. Ran on a relatively new piece of trail (i.e. recently cleared) - about a 0.3mi loop, 25% open field, the rest in the woods. Not too hot but quite humid. FDF's were out, most bothersome in the parking lot. One confirmed kill. Will forgo a blue hat for now, especially when it's this warm. | ||

| Trail Run hills 51:31 | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| Hill intervals at Hand Hollow. 6 x 400m with climbs of ~50m (each) on the first 3, then 30, 30 and 20m. Walked a bit on the 3rd one, ran the rest. Recoveries were ~2:30 - 2:40, jogging back downhill. Splits: 234, 236, 239, 221, 224, 221. Temps in the mid-70's. | ||

| Road Run 37:35 [3] 4.39 mi (8:33 / mi) | ||

| 66N, Albany Tpke, Howes, Pitts, 66S. Nice day - low 70's. | ||
Sunday Jun 22 | ||
| Event: WCOC Crandalls Park | ||
| Orienteering race 18:03 [4] *** 2.2 km (8:12 / km) | ||
| spiked:6/7c shoes: VJ Falcons 2 | ||
| Sprint B at WCOC Crandall Park. Still a bit congested, so didn't push really hard. Lost time on #5 because the description didn't say where in the boulder cluster the bag was hung (I assumed the far side, it was tucked in the middle). Drifted right to #6. Probably lost a total of a minute on the two. Temps in the 70's and humid. Forerunner measured 2.66km. | ||
| Orienteering race 59:28 [4] *** 5.5 km (10:49 / km) | ||
| spiked:10/14c shoes: VJ Falcons 2 | ||
| Red course at WCOC Crandall Park event. Apparently the magnetic north lines on this map aren't always pointing to magnetic north. That only explains the errors on two controls however. On the other two I lost time on, I just wasn't reading the map well. Lost ~1.5 min each on #1, #3, and #10. Lost ~6min on #11, so could've been 10 min faster overall. Warm, humid, still recovering from a cold (my excuses). Forerunner measured 7.2km. | ||
| Orienteering race 23:45 [3] *** 2.2 km (10:48 / km) | ||
| spiked:6/8c shoes: VJ Falcons 2 | ||
| Sprint A and WCOC Crandall Park event. Did this course after Sprint B and the Red course, so was pretty tired and a bit brain-dead. The magnetic north aberration got me on #4 and #5, and a little bit on #7 for 4 - 5 minutes total error. A couple good claps of thunder while I was out, but no rain until after I finished (and that was a brief shower). Forerunner measured 2.75km. | ||
Friday Jun 20 | ||
| Road Run 28:57 [3] 3.31 mi (8:44 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Hooray, back running again. Still have a cold but symptoms are much less severe. I guess this is an "easy" week, although not by design. Legs were a bit tight starting out. 66N to Pitts Rd and back. Mid-60's but humid from an earlier rain shower. | ||

Sunday Jun 15 | ||
| Road Run race 22:04 [5] 5 km (4:25 / km) vdot: 44.4 | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Father's Day 5k Road Race at The Crossings of Colonie Park. Fairly flat with first 0.5k and last 0.75k on roads. The rest was on paved walking/bike path about 6 feet wide. The path curves around quite a bit, so I tried to stay to the inside of the curves when I could.
Finished 51 of 270 overall and 2nd in M55-59 age group. Target time was 21:30 (6:55 pace). Hit the first mile OK, but with the temps in the low 70's and dewpoint in the 60's, it wasn't going to happen. Splits: 654, 713, 718, 38. Forerunner measured each mile long by 0.01 - 0.02 mi. It's a USATF Certified course so that's close enough for me.
| Road Run 24:00 [3] 2.5 mi (9:36 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Warm up before (1.0 mi), cool down after (1.5 mi). | ||
Saturday Jun 14 | ||
| Road Run 22:20 [3] 2.56 mi (8:43 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Easy road run on 66S to loosen up. Low 80's with dewpoint in the upper 60's. Ugh. | ||
Thursday Jun 12 | ||
| Road Run tempo 35:50 | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| 2 mile tempo run in 14:41 (7:20 pace) plus warm up and cool down. N on 66. Low 70's, low humidity, sunny - very nice. | ||
Wednesday Jun 11 | ||
| Road Run 44:00 [3] 5.16 mi (8:31 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| A morning run from the hotel in Evansville, IN (here on business - pretty sure I wouldn't come here for any other reason). First and last part along busy roads with limited shoulders in places. Other part on a road with less traffic but no real shoulders either. In the 60's and sunny - much more pleasant than it's been in the Northeast. | ||
Sunday Jun 8 | ||
| Road Run 59:43 [3] 6.62 mi (9:00 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #8 | ||
| Longish, slow run about half on dirt roads. High humidity training. Air temperature in the upper 70's, dew point about 70. It had been quite a bit warmer but early afternoon thunderstorms dropped the temperatures to a reasonable level. 66N, Pratt, Bacchus, Riders Mills to Dorland, back to Drowne, Pitts, Howes, Shaker Museum, 66S. | ||
Saturday Jun 7 | ||
| Orienteering race 34:30 [4] *** 4.4 km (7:50 / km) +120m 6:54 / km | ||
| spiked:16/16c shoes: VJ Falcons 2 | ||
| Green/Red course at EMPO local event at Tawasentha Park. Most controls were orange level or less, about the best you can do here. Clean run except for some hesitation on a short leg where things looked different than I expected. Ran fairly hard since I caught up to a guy who is fairly new to orienteering but is a faster runner than me and we flip-flopped for several controls. Quite hot (80's) and humid. Forerunner measured 5.04km.
Helped pick up controls afterwards (time not logged). Especially fun was the water control with all of the crushed poison ivy plants around it.

| Trail Run 48:55 [3] 4.08 mi (11:59 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| South from Olivia's Overlook down the ridge of West Stockbridge Mountain. Went as far as an overlook above the toll barrier on the Mass Pike. Trail was a bit gnarlier than I had expected - lots of rock and roots, some steep ups and downs (even though it's along the top of the ridge), and hard to follow in places due to light usage and multiple paths. Good terrain running training.
The weather also contributed to the gnarliness. It had rained earlier in the day so the rocks were wet and slippery and with the dew point not much below the air temperature (upper 60's), there was no chance of much drying happening. O-shoes would've been appropriate. Slipped a few times but managed to not actually fall. AOWN: Saw about a half dozen efts on the trail. Good thing they're bright orange.

| WCOC event at Hemlock Hills, starting at Ned's Mtn. Road entrance. Very good course on a fine map (in progress) by Rick and Susie Dewitt. Many short technical legs with lots of legs crossing and direction changes plus one looong route choice leg and a couple of medium length legs. Had about 4-5 minutes of errors, 2-3 minutes of which were on the last control - I guess I shut the brain off early. Missed a bit on #12 which was an odd feature, one of a row of depressions in a reentrant/stream bed. Also lost some time on execution and/or non-optimized route choices. Excellent weather - 70's and sunny. | ||
