Orienteering race 1:56:50 intensity: (1:00:00 @3) + (56:50 @4) *** 11.27 km (10:22 / km) +448m 8:39 / km

NEOC local event - Score-O at Mt. Norwottuck. Nice course set by Phil with 32 controls varying in point value from 30 to 90 and well distributed across the map (printed at a scale of ~1:11,500, to fit on an 8.5" x 11" page). Two hour time limit. Scored 1300 out of a possible 1840.

Did a counterclockwise loop, picking up most of the controls to the south of the mountain then climbing up the east shoulder (to #91). At 91 I took a minute to analyze my options with about 42 minutes left. Chose to cross the ridge (go north) and pick up more low point controls rather than go for the higher point controls on the southern (steep) hillside. Pointwise I think I could've gotten about 10 more points on the south side if I had executed perfectly (which I didn't do the way I went). Going to the north side insured a straight in trail run when it was time to bail.

Control order: 32-33-57-62-81-92-52-63-82-74-93-56-71-73-91-53-61-51-65-55-34-31.
Should have done 42 between 33 and 57 as it only added about 300m. Missed a bit on 92, 74, and 65 for a total of 6 or 7 minutes lost. Probably could have picked up 45 or 43 on the way in, but was concerned about the time.

Mostly sunny and barely 40F - OK for runners but a bit chilly for the volunteers.

A bit of a struggle to get out the door and to keep moving. Just one of those days but at least I did it. Low 50's, a bonus for late November. Shaker Museum Rd and back.

Red course at HVO/DVOA event at Lewis Morris Park. Wide open woods with some barberry and other prickly stuff and big hills. Not much rock underfoot so the running was fast (quite a contrast to Bushy Ridge). Missed a bit on a few early controls just being sloppy. Also lost a minute or so when I encountered the eight foot high fence shown on the "corrections" map which I failed to look at. Probably could've been about 5 minutes faster overall. Temps in the 40's and sunny while I was running. Didn't start Forerunner until the 1st control, so added 750m to the distance and 7 min to the time. Straightline distance was 7.0 km with 240m climb.

Red course at HVO local event on Bushy Ridge map. Bushy = blueberry and mountain laurel, most of which is undermapped since the map is old. Orienteered fairly well even though moving with any speed was a challenge. A few small errors, all on the order of a minute or so. Temps in the 40's so good for running. Straightline distance 6.6km. Climb not stated but I count about 290m for the route I took.

Crashed pretty hard on a trail near the end of the course resulting in some damage to the Forerunner, a few scrapes and a jammed left index finger (plus whatever additional damage reveals itself overnight). Forerunner appears to still work but has a big scratch on the lens and a spot on the display - followup testing tomorrow.

Red Course, EMPO Club Champs at Moreau Lake SP. Vetting a course which I designed and Phil H-T hung the flags. The course was mostly down by the lakes and partway up the hill but nothing up on the plateau (due to the possibility of hunters and flying bullets). Most of the control sites had been used in the A-meet so I had been to all but one of them before. Execution was mostly OK - hit all of them well but wandered a bit off the line on a couple of legs. Had to move two of the bags (and adjusted two others by 10 - 15 meters). Probably would've been about 55 minutes without the bag moving. Straightline distance was 5.5km with 240m of climb. Super weather - 50's and sunny.
