West Point A-meet middle distance. Sloppy orienteering resulting in several small errors for about six minutes total lost. High on 2, off right on 3 (a very short leg), misread hills on 4 and got way off to the right, chased a bag on 6 but probably only lost a few seconds, too far right on 7, missed a big fast trail on 8, almost overran the last control. But the weather was quite nice - sunny and 60's. SL distance ~4 k. A snafu at the start when they ran out of control descriptions and also had to reuse some maps. Started about 25 min later than originally scheduled.

Sprint at Camp Buckner. Better orienteering than in the middle but simpler controls. Several woods legs with the requisite amount of rockiness. Pretty tired so kind of sluggish for parts of it. Straight line distance 2.1 k.

Billygoat at Earl's Trails, set by PG. A very fine course on a day with perfect weather (sunny, upper 40's - low 50's). Ran well, considering my recent training. Lots of help on most of the controls, JJ in the middle part, Peggy towards the end, and Alar saved me from momentary confusion on the brink of disaster on the way to 15. Skipped #17, which was OK but maybe not optimal. I was originally planning to skip 18 but changed my mind leaving #16. One of my faster Billygoats - shirt # 19. Straight line distance 12.0 km. About 37th overall.

Control pick up at Lock 7 after EMPO local event. Didn't run a course, pretending to taper for the BG tomorrow. Jogged quite a bit carrying stands, etc. so this was enough to loosen up the legs a bit. Low 50's with a breeze. Quite muddy underfoot.

Lugging water at Moreau plus final checks at a few points. Two trips up the hill with 4 gal of water each time. Janet and Rob were there to help so we got a total of 18 gal up the hill and 8 actually placed at control sites. We better not get a prolonged period of sub-freezing temperatures in the next few weeks. Woods were pretty dry. Marshes and depressions water-filled (and still some ice in many). Woods were wonderful as usual. Mid 50's, partly sunny.

Red course at Blue Mountain - local HVO event. Great terrain and map but junky woods due to storm damage a few years ago. Decent running weather with temp in the low 50's. Lots of short technical legs with one longer route choice leg. Nice course by Dave Webber. One big error wandering around looking for #10 checking out every dot knoll until I found #11 to relocate (lost 10-12 min). Off a bit on a few of the earlier controls until I learned that rock shown on the map is big or really big. Probably could've been ~15 min faster. Straight line distance 6.1 km.

Sprinkly and 55F. Got rained on in the last 1/4 mile. Legs mostly recovered from the weekend.

Middle distance at Flying Pig - Ransburg Scout Reservation map, south of Bloomington, IN. Wide open woods with steep spurs and reentrants plus the man-made features of the scout camp. OK run except cor controls 10 and 11. Stopped short and puzzled for a bit at 10. Down the wrong reentrant for 11. About 3 minutes lost total. Temp in the 60's, woods dry. Straight line distance 3.3 km, 200 m climb.

Went 1- 2 vs. Soupbone for the weekend, so the Flying Pig lifetime record stands at 13 - 11 in my favor.

Long Course on Yellowwood map - Day 2 of Flying Pig. A good run on a very physical course (lots of climb without a lot of opportunities to avoid it). Missed a bit on 1, hesitant on 6 and spent a little time unsure of exactly where I was on the leg from 5 to 6. Probably didn't lose more than 2 minutes total. Woods were open and runnable except for some occasional deadfall or logging slash. Visibility was excellent. Temperature about 60F, mostly cloudy so good for running. Straightline distance 7 km.

Course was probably about 20% longer than it should have been, especially considering the steepness of the area. Good thing the weather was dry or it would've been quite a slippery mudfest.

Trail Run warm up/down 8:23 [2] 0.85 km (9:52 / km) +42m 7:55 / km

Walk, run, jog, climb to start.

Sprint on Indiana University campus - 1st day of Flying Pig. OK run except for one control. On control 14 got confused and thought I was on the line from 12 - 13. Lost almost 2.5 minutes trying to figure it out. A few other small misses and hesitations. Out of the money since 2.5 minutes is a huge mistake in a sprint.

Course was long for a sprint, probably by 3 - 6 minutes. A few longer legs and fewer controls may have made a good course even better. Straight line distance 2.7 km.

Perfect day weatherwise, low 60's and sunny.

This is Spring? 34F with a breeze. At least it was daylight. Time to start tapering for the Pig.
