Orienteering race 1:45:54 intensity: (3:56 @1) + (1:02:44 @2) + (31:56 @3) + (7:18 @4) *** 7.89 km (13:25 / km) +239m 11:39 / km

Red course at DVOA local event at Hickory Run SP using the original 1:15000 offset printed map. Map was made in 1988 (!) but is still very good - mapped by Pat Dunlavey, Mark Dominie and Eric Weyman - a classic. Vegetation has thickened a bit with lots of smaller trees having grown up over the years. Courses used the westernmost part of the map which consists primarily of broad, flat hills bisected by Black Run and Fourth Run streams.

Orienteering was slow and quite physical due to summer vegetation with ferns obscuring the footing and lots of rock underfoot. The blandness of the terrain and reduced visibility meant a lot of reliance on the compass. I did fairly well with the compass work and was able to pick up terrain subtleties near the controls to find them (also followed a few "hunches" which turned out to be correct). Only real misses were getting off line on one control and checking 3 or 4 incorrect boulders before finding the correct one at another. Plus lots of hesitations. A fun course by Rob Wilkison. Straight line distance 6.75 km.

A warm, muggy day. Some distant thunder and then some light rain as we finished up.

Park-O at Washington Park in Albany. Mostly open land (mowed grass) with many mature trees, a few statues and fountains, some playground equipment, a long narrow lake (with a bridge near the middle), and an amphitheater (where they were prepping for a production of Spamalot). Some contour detail, particularly near the lake. Phil H-T recently remapped the area so the map is vastly improved over the 1988 version.

Frank Boscoe and Brenan Tarrier made good use of the entire park and got a 4km course on a ~0.5 km^2 map. Since this is a very urban park, they used small pin flags to mark control locations (with a letter at each location which we noted on our punch cards).

An OK run with one significant error when I went to a control on an adjacent spur rather than the correct one. Also lost some time (15 sec) waiting for traffic to cross a street (3 cars, 4 Harleys). Took one longer route choice when I noticed a group posing for pictures on the bridge I wanted to cross and ended up going around the lake. Probably could've been 1.5 - 2 min faster. Mostly cloudy and muggy.

HRM needed a new battery (now fixed).

At Constitution Hill in Lanesboro MA, a BNRC property where we did a snowshoe race this past Winter. There was less snow but more mosquitoes and mud. Trails are mostly jeep road/ATV width (without too much ATV damage). A couple of muddy spots, lots of soft spots due to plenty of rain recently. I ran most of the interesting parts of the snowshoe race (i.e. not the part in the field, which is currently thigh-high grass), plus a couple of additional out-and-backs. Quite muggy.

Didn't push, didn't get hurt.

At Grafton Lakes SP, starting at Mill Pond parking area. Took the Spruce Bog trail then followed a fairly new loop trail to White Lily Pond and back. After returning to the Spruce Bog trail, continued on to the Fire Tower and Chet Bell trails back to the parking lot at the north end of Long Pond Rd where Janet had parked. The trail to White Lily Pond is in the process of being developed, so is marked primarily with flagging tape or pin flags. One portion on the return from the pond had pin flags every 5 to 10 feet but no obvious trail on the ground - very new. It's intended for mountain biking, so lots of (superfluous) twists and turns. I think the piece of land down to White Lily Pond is a new addition to the park, but it's somewhat of a peninsula, so not really a terrain addition from an orienteering perspective.

Temperature was in the low 80's (and noticeably more comfortable in the woods) so tried to keep the pace reasonable. Trails have plenty of rocks and roots. The newly minted trails were fairly soft since they are still mostly forest duff.

At Alford Springs, a BNRC property along the NY/MA border (on the MA side). Trails are pretty tame, mostly old roads now covered in grass but there are some hills. There's one connector trail which is single track. Janet dropped me at one trailhead and then parked at the other so I didn't have to run on the gravel road connecting the two to complete a loop. Did an additional out and back waiting for Janet to finish her excursion. Temp in the upper 70's but humidity wasn't too bad.

Playing at Moreau as part of the Team training weekend. Did the control pick exercise (controls 1 - 10, 13 - 17, 9 - 12, 6, 2, and #73 from the A-meet). Most were marked with either mini-flags or streamers. Since I had used most of the locations for the A-meet I focused on running hard and knowing how I would leave each control. Marshes were the fullest I've ever seen them which caused some minor confusion on a few legs. Overcast and 70ish with a shower starting as we got back to the car. Thanks to Alex for setting this up.

Trail run in Albany Pine Bush, starting from the Nature Center on Rt 155. Figured that trails in the Pine Bush would be less muddy than anywhere else (lots of sand) and they were. Some temporary ponds off in the woods but trails were generally dry. Trails in the area have been rerouted since I was last here and they've made it very clear when a trail is closed (i.e. with fences blocking access). This area has some good views of both the Albany landfill and the New York State Thruway but has the upside of easy parking and restrooms. A nice day with sun and low 70's.

Trail run from Reservoir Road in Lenox. Parked near the gate which now makes Reservoir Rd a dead end (and less convenient). Ran to south on mountain bike trails to the ovelook (facing east above Undermountain Rd) then continued toward Olivia's Overlook on the ridge trail as far as the trail junction and then headed back towards Monk's Pond. Came back up over the hill to where we parked and then did a few other small loops checking ut various trails. Low 70's so pretty nice for running.

At Kennedy Park in Lenox, MA. Beautiful day - mid 60's and dry. Lots of other people out, mostly walking. Forgot the HRM strap, so just distributed the time among the intensities.

Red course at Camp Pinnacle - EMPO local event. Summer-O (hot, humid and thickish woods). Slow going but a fairly clean run with a couple of 30 second misses and a few hesitations. Map seems a bit flaky in a couple of places with more contour detail in the terrain than shown on the map (not really a surprise to me since I've set 3 A-meet days and a BG on this and the adjoining Thacher SP map). Nice course by wwk, avoiding any nasty woods but presenting good navigational challenges. SL distance 5.2 km.

Easyish road run since it was already mid-80's at 10am. Took a few one minute walk breaks towards the end since my bruised right thigh was still a bit sore.
