Trail Run 1:12:02 [3] * 7.0 mi (10:17 / mi)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

Trails at Saratoga National Historical Park (site of the Revolutionary War battle, not Saratoga Spa State Park). Warm and muggy but mostly cloudy so it wasn't too uncomfortable. Trails are pretty tame - no rocks, a few roots and mostly mown grass in the open areas. Nice place for a run, particularly since it was Memorial Day. By the way, the American troops won, halting the British in their attempt to get to Albany from Canada.

Orienteering race 27:35 [5] *** 3.05 km (9:03 / km) +105m 7:43 / km
spiked:8/11c shoes: VJ Falcons

Sprint #1 at Forest Park (Springfield, MA) on courses set by Phil. High humidity, forest wet from rain overnight. Generally small mistakes totaling 2 - 3 minutes. A bit long but a nice course with a good mix of wooded and park-like legs.

Orienteering race 33:20 [4] *** 3.47 km (9:36 / km) +115m 8:14 / km
spiked:11/13c shoes: VJ Falcons

Sprint #2 at Forest Park. Even warmer than for the first sprint. Another nice course by Phil. Ran fairly cleanly with only about 1 minute of errors. May have done better with some different route choices. High temperatures, physically tough woods legs and longish course with plenty of climb made it tough to go at "sprint" speed.

Road Run 26:55 [3] 3.0 mi (8:58 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #5

Rt. 66N, Shaker Musuem Road to T'way bridge and back. 67F and humid. Felt sluggish due to humidity and 4 days of sitting in meetings and not getting a chance to run.

Orienteering 2:02:03 [3] **** 7.3 km (16:43 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons

Blue course at HVO event on Moneyhole Mountain map. An exercise in relocation and adjusting to the map. Map is 20 plus years old and is missing a few details - like the Appalachian Trail which runs across the whole map! And much of the map could be vertical green (blueberry). The vegetation often obscures handy navigation features like stone walls. Actually did fairly well with the relocation part, stopping and being able to read the features to determine where I was whenever I lost contact. A real confidence builder when you think that "the control should be right over there" and it is. Probably could have been 15 - 20 minutes faster. Started to sprinkle about halfway through and was raining by the time I finished.

Road Run 44:00 [3] 4.9 mi (8:59 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #5

32W, Jefferson Hill Rd, Mashodack, Bacchus, Pratt, 66S. 55 and overcast - nice for running.

Road Run 31:05 [3] 3.6 mi (8:38 / mi)

Orienteering race 2:26:50 [4] *** 12.4 km (11:50 / km) +450m 10:01 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons

Billygoat at Macedonia Brook. With Charlie Leonard most of the way, but also with several others for significant pieces of the run. Kept the pace pretty even. Probably the first Billygoat (of thirteen) where I didn't cramp up - maybe I've finally figured it out. Weather was 50's with ocasional sprinkles which may have helped with cramping.
Distance adjusted for 400m saved by skipping #10.

Orienteering race 14:41 [5] *** 1.8 km (8:09 / km) +50m 7:10 / km
spiked:4/6c shoes: VJ Falcons

Pre-Billygoat Sprint #1 - Mostly in the woods. Off a bit on controls 4 and 5 but generally in contact and reading the right amount of stuff for a sprint.

Orienteering race 15:24 [5] *** 1.9 km (8:06 / km) +45m 7:15 / km
spiked:4/5c shoes: VJ Falcons

Pre-Billygoat Sprint #2 - Also mostly in the woods. Driftred a bit right going to 3 to go around swamp. Should've gone straight through 'cause I got my feet wet anyway.

Trail Run 32:08 [3] 3.2 mi (10:02 / mi)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

At Hand Hollow Preserve. Almost drizzling, but not quite. Distance estimated.

Road Run 35:56 [3] 4.0 mi (8:59 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #5

RT 66N, Albany Tpke and back. Bruise on right heel from weekend. Fortunately it's not right on the bottom of the heel but rather off to the inside. Felt it more on downhills but tried not to let it affect my stride. Probably stepped on a rock the wrong way at WP.

Orienteering race 1:17:10 [4] *** 5.89 km (13:06 / km) +170m 11:27 / km
spiked:12/16c shoes: VJ Falcons

Day 2 of West Point A-meet. Even with about 12 min of errors, managed to be fastest M50 and about 6th fastest overall on Green X. Fastest time was 63min. 50's and mostly sunny. Typical West Point stuff, though less steep stuff than yesterday. NIce course, including about 120m across Lake Stillwell on a pontoon bridge.

Orienteering race 1:00:47 [5] *** 4.93 km (12:20 / km) +170m 10:31 / km
spiked:8/12c shoes: VJ Falcons

West Point A-meet - Day 1. On the "Long Pond Mountain" map. Typical West Point stuff - lots of rock (more than actually mapped) and plenty of climb (haven't counted it yet, but I'm sure I did more than "optimum"). No big errors but probably 7 - 8 minutes of smaller ones. A rain shower about 20 minutes before I started but dry during the race. Temp in the 60's. Second overall on Green X by 39 seconds. One second ahead of George W. :-)

Orienteering race 24:32 [5] *** 2.88 mi (8:31 / mi) +100m 7:41 / mi
spiked:13/18c shoes: VJ Falcons

US Team Fundraiser Sprint - set by Peter Gagarin. Ran a bit harder than intended. Several small errors.

Trail Run 43:00 [4] 4.5 mi (9:33 / mi)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

Trails at Kennedy Park in Lenox, MA. Warmest day so far this year, with temps in the 70's. The park is a great place for running (and is popular with the local mountain bikers). It's owned/maintained by the Town of Lenox but is relatively undeveloped (one official parking lot, no other facilities, but access from a couple of other places including the parking lot of a local bike and outdoor equipment shop). I estimate about 10 miles of trails and even though I've run here 15 - 20 times, I still need to pay attention to be sure I know the way back to the car. It's about 25 miles from my house, but only a small detour on the way home from work, and especially good for runs on hot days like today since it's all wooded. The place would make a nice local o-map since the woods are open and there are numerous rock features and plenty of hills. Unfortunately, it's pretty far from any significant orienteering population.

Road Run 29:01 [3] 3.3 mi (8:48 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #5

N on Rt. 66 to Pitt Rd and back. First real run in about a week except for the occasional run/jog while hanging or retrieving bags at the A-meet. It had showered earlier, so I wore raingear, but didn't need it.
