Road Run 34:52 [3] 4.09 mi (8:32 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt 66N, Albany Tpke and back. A route I used to call 4.0 miles, but the GPS says it's more like 4.1. Nice moonlight run - 61F - another "last day for shorts". No ghosts, goblins or ghouls spotted.

Orienteering race 1:11:54 [4] *** 6.15 km (11:41 / km) +375m 8:58 / km
spiked:11/13c shoes: VJ Falcons

Red course at Osbornedale SP (WCOC) with lots of climb. A pretty clean run with only small errors. Probably could've been 2 - 3 minutes faster. A windy day with temperature about 50F. Map is a bit dated vegetation-wise. Some nice areas of runnable woods, some areas with enough deadfall to slow you down. Course was somewhat convoluted to get the distance on this fairly small map. Thanks Rich and Jim for setting the course, etc.

Road Run 26:49 [3] 3.07 mi (8:44 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt 66S. A bit warmer than it's been (47F) but I missed the sunny part of the day. Got a run in today since the prediction is for heavy rain tomorrow.

Road Run tempo 11:46 [4] 1.59 mi (7:24 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Tempo run - something to do to keep from being too bored. :-)

Road Run 22:11 [3] 2.53 mi (8:46 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

The rest of the run. Rt 66N, Shaker Museum Rd. to cemetery and back. Did the faster stuff between 1.0 and 2.6 miles. 41F, some breeze and dark.

Tuesday Oct 24, 2006 #

Road Run 28:39 [3] 3.33 mi (8:36 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt 66N and back. Dark, cold (42F), breezy and sprinkling - nice day for a run.

Event: Sebago Lake

Orienteering race 1:36:31 [4] *** 7.6 km (12:42 / km) +340m 10:23 / km
spiked:14/16c shoes: VJ Falcons

Sebago Lake - South. Red Course. Apparently, we didn't use up all the blueberry and rocks at the Highlander last weekend because there was still plenty left. :-) Did fairly well navigationally except for one control where I completely lost track of where I was (while on a trail!) and spent about 5 minutes figuring it out. I wasn't even sure which way to go to relocate for a few minutes. Ended up that I was only about 100m from the control. It's been a long time since I've felt so totally lost, but it was reassuring that I was able to figure it out without having to go several hundred meters to relocate. Lost about 10 minutes total, 2 or 3 of which was on a bag I think was hung further up a reentrant than where the circle was. Nice, but cool day, nice woods and fun course. Map seems to be a bit outdated vegetation-wise.

Road Run 31:35 [3] 3.58 mi (8:49 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

32W, Jefferson Hill Rd, Albany Tpke, 66S. Hilly. 49F and breezy. Skipped WCOC Tarrywile meet (been there, done that) to catch up on winterizing around the house. Still need to put the lawnmower away and get out the snowblower.

Thursday Oct 19, 2006 #

Road Run 31:59 [3] 3.61 mi (8:52 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

66S, Richmond Rd to Bashford and back. Almost 60F. Looks like it might be the last run in shorts for a while. No apparent remaining effects of the Highlander (other than the scrape on my right arm from a fall just before control 24). Ready for more Harriman on Sunday!

Wednesday Oct 18, 2006 #

Road Run 23:39 [3] 2.64 mi (8:57 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt. 66N. A relatively short run to loosen the legs up. Felt OK once I got moving. Much easier recovery than from last year's Highlander when I couldn't run for nearly a week.

Sunday Oct 15, 2006 #

Orienteering race 5:23:59 [4] *** 24.6 km (13:10 / km)
spiked:21/25c shoes: VJ Falcons

Hudson Highlander. A bit cool but nice for running (or walking later in the race). My fastest Highlander ever (by 8 minutes) and my 10th finish. Nice course by Dan Schaublin and his cohorts. Lots of trail running options which was offset by plenty of (unmapped) blueberry, overgrown swamps and of course, rocks. Kept from cramping until about 10 minutes from the end when I fell and a calf cramped. Walked most of the final loop. Navigated pretty well on those legs I did on my own (surprisingly, most of the first orienteering loop). The GPS says I actually went 29.4km.

Friday Oct 13, 2006 #

Road Run 31:03 [3] 3.5 mi (8:52 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt 66S and back. High 40's.

Wednesday Oct 11, 2006 #

Road Run 27:11 [3] 3.08 mi (8:50 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt 66N, Albany Tpke and back. Wore the reflective vest for the first time, indicating the start of the cold and dark season - bleh. Actually wasn't cold today (58F), but it's coming.

Note

EMPO Event at Grafton Lakes SP

Orienteering race 1:12:16 [4] *** 6.0 km (12:03 / km)
spiked:10/12c shoes: VJ Falcons

Red course at EMPO event at Grafton Lakes SP. One 3 minute error, otherwise fairly clean run. More great weather and a nice course by Pat Dunlavey.

Orienteering 45:50 [2] *** 3.0 km (15:17 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons

Picked up controls at Grafton Lakes SP since I hadn't had enough orienteering in the last 4 days. :-) Combination of jogging and walking. Picked up 9 intermediate and advanced controls.

Sunday Oct 8, 2006 #

Orienteering race 1:23:36 [5] **** 7.1 km (11:46 / km)
spiked:9/12c shoes: VJ Falcons

NAOC Long Course on Rocky Ridge map. A nice mix of (very) techinical legs with route choice legs (including one that was 2.3km long). Had a pretty clean run through the first six controls then lost about 8 minutes on 7 and 8, in both cases by not being certain of my attack point. Clean the rest of the way. Took mostly trails for the long leg but lost maybe a minute by getting caught in a marshy area that was thicker than the map showed. Another day with outstanding weather.

Saturday Oct 7, 2006 #

Orienteering race 47:24 [5] **** 3.7 km (12:49 / km)
spiked:6/12c shoes: VJ Falcons

NAOC Middle Distance on Rocky Ridge map. Subtle, complex contour and rock detail with lots of rock underfoot. 10-11 minutes of errors spread among about 4 controls. Could have been much worse since relocation in some of the areas was quite tricky. Distraction by others led to a 5 minute error on #10 which should have been a straightforward leg. A mediocre run at best, but good enough for 9th in M45-54 (and 3rd among those 50+), so many others struggled even more. Still 19 minutes behind the winner. Outstanding weather again today (60's and sunny).

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] **** 3.0 km (20:00 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons

Walking (and a little jogging) on the training map for the NAOC. Challenging terrain.

Friday Oct 6, 2006 #

Orienteering race 16:10 [5] *** 2.4 km (6:44 / km)
spiked:16/16c shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

Sprint at NAOC on McMaster University map. Course 2 (Older folks course). Fun and fast course with lots of route choices around buildings. Missed a better route to number 4 and lost about 20 seconds. Otherwise pretty clean except for the occasional hesitation. Definitely a course for the runners. Outstanding weather - mostly sunny and about 15C (that's Canadian for ~60F).

Orienteering 20:00 [3] ** 2.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

Jogging around the training course plus assorted other "warmup" (like to the car a few times to get things I forgot).

Thursday Oct 5, 2006 #

Road Run 22:07 [3] 2.55 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 9.5

Short run south on Rt 66 and back with 5 or 6 pickups on the return. Brisk (50F and dropping) - wore long sleeves and tights, and didn't feel too overdressed. Trying out the shoes I'm planning to use for tomorrow's NAOC sprint.

Tuesday Oct 3, 2006 #

Road Run 37:06 [3] 4.25 mi (8:44 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6

Rt 66N, Pratt Road, Bacchus, 66S. One big hill in the second half of the first mile. 63F with sprinkles. Quite humid for October.

Sunday Oct 1, 2006 #

Orienteering race 1:29:07 [4] *** 7.25 km (12:18 / km) +230m 10:37 / km
spiked:13/17c shoes: VJ Falcons

Red Course at Trout Brook Valley. Raining, but in the 60's, so plenty warm. A very nice course in really nice woods with an excellent map. One 5 minute error on #5 when I checked a feature 30m away from the feature with the bag on it, lost contact and couldn't make things match the map for a while so made a big loop until things started to make sense again. Also a few smaller errors on the short legs (# 10 - 13). Probably ~8minutes total errors. The GPS said I actually went 9.21km, which seems reasonable.
