Wednesday Jan 31

Road Run 37:33 [3] 4.37 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
66N, Shaker Museum Rd to cemetery, back via Howes and Albany Tpke. About 25F with a nearly full moon. Quite nice.

Sunday Jan 28

Event: WCOC Meet and Winter Meeting

Orienteering race 21:10 [5] *** 2.4 km (8:49 / km) +50m 7:59 / km
spiked:6/8c shoes: VJ Falcons
Sprint A on Bennett's Pond map (WCOC). Decent run, a little sloppy on a couple controls. Nice area - mix of open woods and barberry patches and plenty of rocky stuff. ~40F. Forerunner measured 2.80km.
Orienteering race 21:58 [4] *** 2.4 km (9:09 / km) +50m 8:17 / km
spiked:7/8c shoes: VJ Falcons
Sprint C at Bennett's Pond. Good run. Really liked the series of short legs (3-4-5-6), maybe because I hit them all pretty cleanly. Got caught by some nasty thorny stuff on the way to 7 which resulted in a significant bit of bleeding from my left knee (a few relatively small scratches which must have been deeper than typical - unless I have an artery running across my kneecap). A few band aids and some tape and I was ready for the next sprint. Forerunner measured 2.96km covered.
Orienteering race 23:11 [4] *** 2.4 km (9:40 / km) +50m 8:45 / km
spiked:8/8c shoes: VJ Falcons
Sprint B at Bennett's Pond. Another good run, although I was feeling the earlier sprints. Forerunner measured 2.88km. Thanks to Rick and Susie for fun courses. And to the weather man - one day earlier or later would've been about 20 degrees colder.
Trail Run 15:00 [2] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons
Walk/jog to the start three times.

Saturday Jan 27

Road Run 40:45 [3] 4.56 mi (8:55 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
Syring, Alb Tpke, Jefferson Hill, Bachus, Pratt, 66S. 26F and overcast - but warm enough to run outside. Some people took the day off to rest for tomorrow's WCOC sprints, but not me.

Thursday Jan 25

Treadmill tempo 13:02 [4] 1.7 mi (7:40 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
Tempo run on the treadmill. Wore a heart rate monitor just so I'd have a gadget to play with. HR was at about 155 +/- 4 at 7:40 pace.
Treadmill 17:30 [3] 1.8 mi (9:42 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
Warm up, cool down etc. Was so bored that I quit at 3.5 miles total rather than do 4 as originally planned. Maybe 15F, breezy and dark would've been better.

Tuesday Jan 23

Road Run 36:08 [3] 4.16 mi (8:41 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
32W, Smith Rd., 203N to the 2nd T'way bridge and back. 29F and dark.

Sunday Jan 21

Trail Run 1:08:50 [3] 6.53 mi (10:32 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
Pine Bush Preserve in Albany (Madison Avenue Ext. trailhead). About half on single track mtn bike trails (which are technically closed since the "protectors of nature" want people in the Pine Bush to stay only on marked trails - apparently the bikers aren't reading the rules). Nice woods but I don't think we'd be allowed to orienteer here (even though we do have a map of a different area of the Pine Bush which we've used somewhat surreptiously). Low 20's but much less wind than yesterday so it was quite acceptable.

Friday Jan 19

Road Run 35:21 [3] 4.06 mi (8:43 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
Rt 66S and back. 34F and breezy (with lots of wind predicted for tomorrow). Snowed a bit today and I almost opted for the treadmill. When I found out the temperature was above freezing, it was an easy decision.

Wednesday Jan 17

Treadmill tempo 11:30 [4] 1.5 mi (7:40 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
Dark and 15F forced me inside and onto the dreaded treadmill. Took the opportunity to do a tempo run - mostly to fight the boredom.
Treadmill 23:00 [3] 2.5 mi (9:12 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
Warming up, cooling down and doin' some miles. Forerunner mileage and treadmill readout weren't even close.
C • Forerunner 2
Note
Can' t add to the comment about the Forerunner for some reason, so I'll add it here:
Gotcha! (maybe). FR won't work to measure distance on a treadmill (or any stationary device) since as far as the GPS is concerned, you're staying in the same place. I didn't even have the FR with me, so it read zero while the treadmill said about 4 miles. :-)

Monday Jan 15

Road Run 48:43 [3] 5.44 mi (8:57 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
32W, N on Hanley to the gas line and back. 35F and raining lightly - after a period of freezing rain earlier in the day, amounting to about a 1/4" of ice on everything. Ice coming off trees and power lines kept things interesting during the run. Off from work today for the MLK holiday so got to run in daylight.

Sunday Jan 14

Orienteering race 56:45 [4] *** 6.7 km (8:28 / km) +90m 7:56 / km
spiked:16/20c shoes: VJ Falcons
Score-O at Norray Farm (on foot - no snow for ski-o). Got 20 of the possible 21 controls, plus bonus points for finishing early. Sloppy on four of the controls, otherwise I could have also gotten the other one. Straight line distance measured from map was about 5.5km. Reported distance is from Forerunner. Orienteering here isn't difficult, but having to decide on control order, route choice, and watch the clock made for good training. Low 40's with light rain showers. Ground wasn't frozen in most places, which meant it was muddy. No problem with the ankle - didn't bother with Active Ankle. Glad I ignored the doctor's advice to stay off it for a month. :-)

Thursday Jan 11

Road Run 35:30 [3] 4.1 mi (8:39 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
66N, Shaker Museum Rd to the cemetery and back. A bit colder than it's been, 32F with a breeze out of the east.

Tuesday Jan 9

Road Run 30:29 [3] 3.57 mi (8:31 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
66S and back. 35F and dark. Lots of stress to burn off after a horrible day at work. A doubleheader: restructuring (i.e. people losing jobs) and a "rumor" that the business is for sale (could be credible since it appeared in both the WSJ and NYTimes). I survived. If you have $10 billion you're looking to invest you could own your own plastics company. :-)

Sunday Jan 7

Trail Run 32:39 [3] 2.86 mi (11:25 / mi) +120m 6:17 / km
shoes: NB 809
Run on the trails in Freund Preserve, a small piece of Nature Conservancy land only 2.5 miles away. Covered all the trails twice and then some. It was the first time I've run here with the Forerunner, so I now have the trails "mapped". Two significant hills, one climbing about 100 feet in 0.1miles and the other climbing 110 feet in about 0.15m. Went up each one once, with a mix of running and walking. First time on trails since I sprained my ankle - no problems. 45F and sunny - cooler than yesterday but still nice.
Walking warm up/down (in the woods) 8:22 [1] 0.36 mi (23:15 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
Wandered around in the woods a bit as I cooled down.

Saturday Jan 6

Road Run 46:06 [3] 5.18 mi (8:54 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
T-shirt and shorts and I was overdressed. 66F and sunny at 11am. Took the shirt off for the last 2 miles. According to all the calendars I've checked, today is indeed January 6, not May 6. If there's an upside to climate change, then this must be it. Glad I don't own a ski area in the Northeast US. 66N, Albany Tpke, Howes, Pitts,Drown, Riders Mills Rd, 66S.

Wednesday Jan 3

Road Run 32:11 [3] 3.64 mi (8:51 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
66N, Shaker Museum Rd. and back. Another non-winter day in January (40F). First run in the dark since I twisted the ankle. Carried a light but didn't need it because the moon was full. Both calves are sore - what's with that? Guess I should've taken the ramp-up approach coming back after 11 days off.

Monday Jan 1

Road Run 28:35 [3] 3.33 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
Just couldn't resist going out for a run since it was 46 degrees. Fog and mist, but quite comfortable running. 66N to Pitt Rd and back. Left calf a bit tight while running - probably more due to running two days in a row than the ankle injury. Probably should come up with some training goals for the year. Have run every day this year so far, but I don't thnk I'll make maintaining the streak one of my goals. :-)
