Orienteering race 59:47 [5] *** 5.9 km (10:08 / km) +240m 8:25 / km
spiked:14/17c shoes: VJ Falcons
Day 1 at Fair Hill (Interscholastics). An OK run except for errors at controls 3 and 4 resulting in a loss of about 7 - 8 minutes. Was sloppy on the attack going into 3 and didn't read the detail in the circle carefully, so I think I went right by the bag without seeing it. Searched up and down the stream for a while before finding it. Hurried out of 3 trying to make up lost time and headed up the (almost) parallel reentrant to the right of the one I needed. Relocated on the fields. The rest of the run was OK except for another 30 seconds lost chasing the wrong bag on #14 even though I knew it wasn't the one I wanted. Managed to (just) break an hour but was well off the leaders' pace. Not a good run.
Orienteering race 19:09 [5] *** 2.7 km (7:06 / km) +60m 6:23 / km

Sprint at Fair Hill (non-sanctioned). Nice course, in the woods but with lots of trails and plenty of route choices. Started one minute behind Mike Minium. Caught Mike at 4 then made an error on the way to 6 crossing a smaller stream on a trail and thinking it was the larger one (lost ~20sec) and he regained the lead. Punched after Mike at 8 then took the route to the right while he went left and I beat him to 9 by 30 - 50m. On my own the rest of the way in. Ended up 20th overall (out of nearly 100 who did the sprint). Earned 23 sprint points (18th male) which ties my 6th lowest score so far - so no net gain.

Sunday Mar 25

Orienteering (Field Checking) 2:00:00 [2] *** 6.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
Flagging most of the rest of the Billygoat controls at Thacher. Also checked out (and flagged) one of the sprint courses at Pinnacle. Did a bit of mapping to update the area at Camp Pinnacle where they've put in some fences to contain horses. Found most of the control locations OK, but there's one that's "bump in the snow which I think has a stome wall under it". I'll let the vetter check that one.

Snow today varied from none (in the fields at Pinnacle) to up to my knees on the leeward sides of some hills and it was all pretty wet. I was at the highest elevations on the map today, hence more snow. I used snowshoes for the first loop but then went without them through some areas where I could've used them. A successful day considering the conditions. Temperatures in the 40's but the forcasted "sun later in the day" never materialized. Actual time out was about 4 hours.

If the Billygoat were run today, the recommended footwear would be plastic bags. :-)

Orienteering (Field Checking) 2:00:00 [2] *** 6.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
Flagging control locations for the Billygoat at Thacher SP. Between zero and 15 inches of wet snow on the ground (and there wasn't very much zero!). Did most of it on snowshoes but the snow was pretty soft and heavy so it was a bit of a slog. Actually spent about 4 hours but didn't want to inflate the training time too much. Got streamers at 14 locations (more than half) with only one questionable one (it's hard to find rocky ground when it's under a foot of snow). Started out sunny and upper 40's then it clouded up and I finished up just as the rain/sleet started in earnest. The highest elevation controls remain to be flagged and I'm sure there won't be less snow there.

Friday Mar 23

Road Run tempo 11:28 [4] 1.52 mi (7:32 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Tempo pace but broken into 3 x 0.5mi with ~2min easier in between. Tempo intervals? Don't know if it makes any sense as a workout, but it's what I did.
Road Run 24:06 [3] 2.7 mi (8:55 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Rt 66S and back. The non-hard stuff. 50F and sunny except the sun was low in the sky and the southernmost 1/2 mile of the run was all shaded so it was a bit cool.

Wednesday Mar 21

Road Run 35:41 [3] 4.1 mi (8:41 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Back on the roads again. Spring is here but it doesn't quite feel like it yet. Sunny but 38F and breezy (from the south). Rt. 66N and back.

AOWN: Spotted what I think is a merganser swimming in the Kinderhook Creek and then flying up the stream. My first thought was "why is there a big woodpecker swimming in the creek?".

Orienteering race 59:20 [4] **** 6.1 km (9:44 / km) +315m 7:44 / km

Flying Pig Classic at Miami Whitewater - South. Woods more open than on the northern part of the park. An excellent course by Matt Robbins - lots of leg length variety, plenty of direction changes and good use of the very complex "badlands" areas. About 2 - 3 minutes of errors. Sloppy on 4 and 5 and drifted off to the left on 6 and had a bit of "where the heck am I" anxiety when I saw buildings which I didn't expect to see. Managed to recover fairly quickly and ended up with a decent run. Early start (9:12am) so it was even colder than the previous days - low 30's but sunny.
C • 2nd! 2
Note
Yowsa! When we got home from the Pig, there was about 15" of snow waiting in the driveway. Shoveled our way into the house (glad we had shovels and boots in the car) and then fired up the snowblower for an hour or so to get the car in. Glad we paid extra to park in the garage at the airport so we didn't have to dig the car out there.

An outstanding weekend event put on by the OCIN folks. Great organization and lots of good orienteering.

Orienteering race 20:17 [5] *** 2.5 km (8:07 / km) +100m 6:46 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: VJ Falcons
Flying Pig Sprint at French Park. Fun sprint with first half in the woods and second half across open fields. Minor error on first control (~15 sec) and a big error on #5 (~1:45 - got confused by the bridge(s) in the terrain which weren't explicitly shown on the map and got into the wrong ditch). Upper 30's and breezy.
Orienteering race 19:49 [5] *** 2.4 km (8:15 / km) +120m 6:36 / km
spiked:13/13c shoes: VJ Falcons
Flying Pig Sprint at Burnet Woods. Second sprint of the day - a bit more open than the first but with plenty of climb. Clean run. Went more or less straight from 12 to 13 - road route may have been faster.

Flying Pig Middle Distance at Miami Whiterwater - North. Nice technical course with a series of 4 sprint type controls at the end. About 3 min total of errors - stopped a spur short on the long leg (#3) and was too far downhill on the quite short eighth leg (#7 may have been farther downhill than shown on the map). Apparently others made more errors since I ended up with the fastest time on the Green course. Temps in the low 40's with some breeze.

Thursday Mar 15

Note
(injured)
Right calf (and hamstring to a lesser extent) still sore from the Valley Goat, so I've been resting them - hoping to be OK for the Pig. Had some cramping during the Valley Goat which apparently the muscles did not like.

Sunday Mar 11

Event: Valley Goat III

Orienteering long 2:26:53 [4] *** 14.3 km (10:16 / km) +545m 8:38 / km
shoes: VJ Falcons
Valley Goat III, Long version. Beautiful day, 40's and sunny with a bit of breeze. Nice course, but some brutal climbs and descents on rocky hillsides (occasionally partway down the hill and then back up). Flip-flopped with Karl Ahlswede and Phil Bricker through most of the race, taking different lines but usually helping each other into the controls. On the verge of cramping a few times but managed to control it by walking. Couse started and finished on the Mt. Misery map with a loop on the Mt. Joy map. Forerunner measured 16.1km distance.

Updated the distance after measuring it on the map - a 10% bonus over the advertised 13km. Plus 545m of climb based on my route.

Long - Splits

Saturday Mar 10

Road Run 29:27 [3] 3.33 mi (8:51 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Rt 66N and back. Above freezing! 39F with a breeze out of the south so not quite T-shirt and shorts weather yet. New shoes - starting to feel a twinge in the right knee and the shoes I was wearing have hit 300 miles, so I thought it might be time to try some new ones.

Thursday Mar 8

Treadmill intervals 10:00 [5] 1.42 mi (7:03 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
Intervals on the treadmill. 5 x 2:00 @ 7:03 pacewith 1:30 recovery.
Treadmill 25:00 [3] 2.65 mi (9:26 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
Warm up/Cool down and the in between stuff on the treadmill. Had three days off since I just couldn't motivate myself to get on the treadmill yesterday and it's too darn cold to run outside. The weather starts to warm up tomorrow so maybe this will be the last treadmill session for a while.
C • We can only hope! 1

Sunday Mar 4

Event: Pine Hil Sprints

Road Run 51:56 [3] 5.8 mi (8:57 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
66S, Richmond, Bashford, 32W, Smith, 203S, 32E. 30F with a breeze from the West. Knees a bit sore, probably from skiing.

Saturday Mar 3

Other (Downhill Skiing) 1:00:00 [2]
Downhill skiing at Jiminy (at night) with Rob. Like skiing in sugar (aka loose granular). Pretty good once I figured out how to ski in it. About 15,000 ft of vertical in about 3 hours (let's hear it for detachable lifts and no lift lines!).

Friday Mar 2

Treadmill tempo 11:30 [4] 1.5 mi (7:40 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
Tempo run on the treadmill. Sleet/slush/rain earlier in the day so I wimped out to the treadmill.
Treadmill 14:30 [3] 1.5 mi (9:39 / mi)
shoes: NB 878 - #6
The not-tempo-run part.

Thursday Mar 1

Other (Downhill Skiing) 1:00:00 [2] *
Skiing at Gore Mt. Beautiful day - Sunny and upper 20's - low 30's. Skied in the glades a bit, so there was some stuff higher than 2 intensity.
