Wednesday May 30

Trail Run 43:27 [3] 4.39 mi (9:53 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
Hand Hollow Preserve from the (newly opened) upper parking lot. Ran the full length of the main trail and back plus an extra loop up near the pond. Low 80's but felt cooler in the woods.

AOWN: Heron's nest. Mom (or dad) was at the nest and there was baby bird activity in the nest. Couldn't see the little one(s) very well since I obeyed the signs to stay back 1000 feet and didn't have binoculars. Apparently one of the few heron rookeries in the area. Cool.

Monday May 28

Trail Run 33:54 [3] 3.24 mi (10:27 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
Trails at Sutherland Pond (Ooms Conservation Area). Mostly on trails in open fields. They mow the trails, but the grass was 4 - 5" tall so I had to lift my feet just a bit more than usual for a trail run - good O-training but I could feel the extra effort. Only about 0.3 miles of the run was in the woods. Very nice area recently made publicly accessible thanks to the Columbia Land Conservancy, the Open Space Institute and generous former landowners. Gorgeous day - 75, sunny with a breeze.

AOWN: A painted turtle crossing the trail, a pair of swans on the pond and lots of other birds. Also could hear a bullfrog near where we parked.

Sunday May 27

Note
DVOA Event at Stuckey Pond
Orienteering 2:41:04 [3] *** 13.15 km (12:15 / km) +400m 10:38 / km
spiked:13/17c shoes: VJ Falcons
DVOA event at Stuckey Pond (PEEC) - Blue Course. Sunny and in the 80's with thick woods. Bailed out after I didn't hit 14 (a trail junction of indistinct trails in green) and then did three short controls on the way back in. Course was 11.95km with 490m climb and 19 controls - a bit long given the weather and woods. I only skipped two controls plus didn't bother to find 14, although I'm sure I was in the circle. Cut about 1.5km and maybe 50m of climb out of the course. Reported distance is from Forerunner. Hit the first 6 controls cleanly and then started getting frustrated by thick woods and low visibility.

AOWN: Missed stepping on a fawn by about two steps - it didn't move. If momma was nearby, I didn't see her. Later spotted a 3.5' long black snake on a trail. Still trying to identify the actual species since it had a pattern on it rather than just being solid black.

Thursday May 24

Trail Run 44:46 [3] 4.01 mi (11:09 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
At Kennedy Park. Hot - in the 80's so didn't push. Mostly wide trails on the way out and single track on the way back.

Tuesday May 22

Road Run 31:50 [3] 3.64 mi (8:44 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
66N, Shaker Museum Rd and back. Nice day - 68 and sunny. Felt a bit sluggish at the start so switched the watch to a page where I couldn't see the pace and just ran where it felt comfortable.

On the way out I passed one of those devices which displays your speed (to try to get you to go the speed limit) facing the other direction. Well, on the way back, it detected me and told me I was going 7mph. So who's going to turn down a challenge like that? I got it to read 11 and it may have flickered to 12 for a bit. I'm gonna interpret that as an indication that those things display a bit higher than actual. But it was entertaining - and I stayed under the posted speed limit (30).

Monday May 21

Note
(rest day)
Billygoat recovery. I'm not as sore as I'd be if I ran the race, but I'm at least as tired. I enjoyed setting the course (and getting the feedback), but it's nice to be done. I'll try to get back into a more normal routine tomorrow.
C • Well deserved rest 1

Sunday May 20

Orienteering 1:00:00 [2] *** 2.0 mi (29:59 / mi)
Hanging the rest of the Billygoat controls. And then did some set-up, and a bit each of registration, finish, results, awards, and then some clean-up. No major glitches, the weather turned nice just in time for the race, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves (except maybe John F, who dnf'ed due to an injury).
Trail Run 15:00 [1] 0.8 km (18:45 / km)
Walk to the Billygoat start and back. Hey - I'm desperate for some training to log. :-)

Saturday May 19

Event: Billygoat

Orienteering 30:00 [1] *** 2.0 mi (14:59 / mi)
Hanging and picking up controls for the BG Sprints. Also setting up and taking down stuff, plus standing around for about 3 hours "supervising" the event. Rainy and cool with a bit of a breeze in the open field at Camp Pinnacle.

Friday May 18

Orienteering 2:00:00 [2] *** 7.0 mi (17:08 / mi)
shoes: NB 804 - Size 10
Hanging bags for the Billygoat and Sprints and lugging water to a couple of BG controls. Cool (50's) and overcast but no rain. Lots of short loops with driving in between. Spiked most of the controls. Visibility a bit lower now that the leaves are out - makes it easier to hide the bags. :-)

Wednesday May 16

Road Run 29:03 [3] 3.32 mi (8:44 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
66N to Pitts Rd and back. Light rain but didn't wimp out. Mid 60's, so quite nice. Spotted a red-tailed hawk (he spotted me too and flew off).

Tuesday May 15

Note
(rest day)
Tapering for the Billygoat? Nope - just being a slug. Missed an AOWN experience - about 10 minutes after I would have started a run we got about 3 minutes of pea-sized hail in a brief thunderstorm. Nice rainbow afterwards.

Sunday May 13

Trail Run 1:04:12 [3] 6.2 mi (10:21 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
Trails at Skidmore College North Woods, just north of the college. Nice area with a moderate trail network. Some carriage roads and some single track, mostly made by mtn bikes (probably without consent of the land owner). Ran around exploring without a map - pretty easy to keep track since the area is well defined by development all around plus has a power line through it which leads right to the parking area. Absolutely gorgeous day - sunny and 60's.
Note
Good thing we were planning to go to Saratoga today so it wasn't an inconvenience to stop by Kinko's to pick up the re-do on the Billygoat maps. They had printed a file I had sent earlier as a test of quality and appearance rather than the "Final" version. Now I have twice the number of maps I need (since there were only minor changes which did not affect the course). Maybe we should offer a discount for late registrants - Nah.

Saturday May 12

Event: Huntington SP Local

Friday May 11

Road Run tempo 11:12 [4] 1.51 mi (7:25 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Tempo run. Mostly on dirt road (Bashford and Richmond) with rolling hills. Warm but not too hot (78ish). Pushed pretty hard on the last big uphill to keep the pace up.
Road Run 22:14 [3] 2.56 mi (8:41 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
The rest of the run. 66S, Richmond, Bashford S. Started the tempo at the turn around (2.03mi). Right knee twinging for first half mile or so. OK later.
Note
Pick up the Billygoat maps tomorrow - about 90 entrants so far. Sprint maps are done. Fewer than 30 doing the sprints - easy sprint points for those who are coming!

Wednesday May 9

Road Run 29:26 [3] 3.32 mi (8:52 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Rt. 66N to Pitts Rd and back. Hot - 84F. Felt sluggish, possibly because I had a bigger lunch than usual. Right knee a bit sore during and after run - don't know what's up with that.

Sunday May 6

Event: Pond Mountain Local

Orienteering 1:33:02 [4] *** 7.8 km (11:56 / km) +210m 10:31 / km
spiked:13/15c shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Blue Course at WCOC local event at Pond Mountain. One control was circled incorrectly on the master map - spent about 15 minutes on what should have been a 5 minute leg and then went on without ever finding the boulder that the bag was actually on. Orienteered well otherwise with smallish errors on two controls and a 3 or 4 minute error on another. Forerunner measured 9.9km actual distance covered. Beautiful day - mostly sunny and almost 60F. Nice map and a nice course.

Saturday May 5

Event: EMPO - Moreau Lake State Park

Orienteering race 1:32:39 [4] *** 6.75 km (13:44 / km) +245m 11:37 / km
spiked:11/13c shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Red course at EMPO local event at Moreau Lake SP. OK run except for a huge error on one control - a parallel error which I then compounded by waiting to relocate about 10 minutes longer than I should have. The map is a bit flaky in places and some of the controls were hung on imprecise features (e.g. "thicket" when the green blob is almost the size of the control circle). Pushed hard (level 5) for the first 9 controls but then backed off after screwing up #10. Over 10km actual distance by the Forerunner - 2.6 of which was on the leg I messed up - beeline length ~800m. Nice weather, partly sunny and 60's.
Orienteering 1:05:00 [1] *** 4.7 km (13:50 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Picking up controls at Moreau. Mostly walked.

Friday May 4

Event: US Team Trials

Thursday May 3

Trail Run 45:24 [3] 4.62 mi (9:49 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
At Kennedy Park in Lenox, MA. Perfect weather - 60's and sunny. Trails were not as muddy as I thoght they would be. Just a few soft spots. Several unleashed dogs but they were all very well behaved.

Tuesday May 1

Road Run 35:49 [3] 4.07 mi (8:47 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
66N, Albany Tpke. Still a bit sore from the weekend at the beginning but felt better as I got into it. ~60F and overcast.
