Tuesday Jul 31 | ||
| Trail Run 40:33 [3] 3.84 mi (10:34 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| Kennedy Park in Lenox, MA. Hot day but not too humid. Probably about 80F in the woods. Didn't push too hard. Plenty of hills. | ||
Sunday Jul 29 | ||
| Trail Run 55:30 [3] 5.13 mi (10:48 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| Trail run in Albany Pine Bush (Blueberry Hill and environs). Hot and humid. Had planned to for an hour but felt like I was struggling to keep going, so didn't make an effort to stretch the run. Some of the trails were a bit overgrown, with scratchy things projecting out into the trails. Shorts plus scratchy things plus sweat is not comfortable. :-( | ||
Saturday Jul 28 | ||
| Road Run 31:19 [3] 3.61 mi (8:39 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #7 | ||
| Shaker Museum Rd. and back. 76F with the dew point only a few degrees lower. Sprinkled for most of the time.
AOWN: Spotted a family of skunks crossing a recently mowed field. They first looked like a big ball of black and white fur moving across the field. As they got closer I could tell it was an adult (mom, I assume) and at least two little ones hanging very close. I didn't go close enough to tell if there might have been a third sibling on the far side. Surprised to see them out in the daytime.
Wednesday Jul 25 | ||
| Road Run 31:02 [3] 3.61 mi (8:34 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #7 | ||
| 66S, Richmond Rd to Bashford and back. Two days in a row! (mostly because I know I won't be able to run tomorrow - EMPO's Annual Meeting with pizza and beer probably involved, which will preclude running.) Apparently this was just a "jog" to some. Felt like running to me. Low 80's. | ||

Tuesday Jul 24 | ||
| Road Run 29:28 | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #7 | ||
| 66S and back. 2 x 0.25 mi at ~1:43 pace. Not sure if two reps counts as an interval workout, but that's what I did. Low 70's, partly cloudy. | ||
Sunday Jul 22 | ||
| Trail Run 1:48:43 [3] * 7.73 mi (14:03 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| Trails at Moreau Lake SP, across the Palmertown Range (the undeveloped area of the park, except for trails). Ran the range from the west to the east, mostly on the East Ridge and Ridge Run Trails with an additional out and back partway along the West Ridge Trail. Janet dropped me at the west end, then drove to the other end where she hiked a loop, parking at the high point on Spier Falls Road.
First part of the run was ~600' climb in about a mile to the top of the plateau. Then lots of small ups and downs on mostly single track trail with plenty of rocks and roots - pretty technical. Trails were tough to follow at times because even though they're marked, they're not always distinct on the ground. Probably had to stop to check for markers about twenty times, with a few significant excursions onto unmarked trails. About 400' descent at the end to get down off the plateau. Great woods and terrain up on top but the logistics of running an O event here would be challenging. There are no roads to get you up on the plateau (except maybe the one to the medium security prison just south of the area). Outstanding weather - 70's, sunny and fairly dry. Carried a camelback but was still underhydrated at the end.
| Walking warm up/down (Hiking) 12:37 [1] 0.55 mi (22:55 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| Short out and back walk to meet Janet along the trail I knew she was returning on. | ||
Friday Jul 20 | ||
| Trail Run 38:04 [3] 3.83 mi (9:57 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| Trails at Hand Hollow. Fom the upper parking lot, so the first half was generally down and the second half up. Cooler day than it's been - low 70's, partly cloudy with a breeze. Humidity was down too, although it showered for a couple of minutes as I drove home.
AOWN: A heron at the rookery (down at the water, not in the nest).
Tuesday Jul 17 | ||
| Road Run 38:50 [3] 4.55 mi (8:31 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #7 | ||
| Syring Rd, Albany Tpke west (actually north) to the gas pipeline and back. 1:43 faster on the return than going out, probably due to the ~80m of climb on the way out vs. ~20m on the return. Low 80's and sunny but humidity wasn't too bad.
AOWN: a great blue heron took off from the pond along Albany Tpke as I approached.
Saturday Jul 14 | ||
| Road Run 34:02 [3] 3.9 mi (8:43 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #7 | ||
| 66N, Shaker Museum Rd., back via Howes and Albany Tpke. NIce day - 78F, sunny and dry. | ||
Wednesday Jul 11 | ||
| Trail Run 1:06:02 [3] ** 6.33 mi (10:26 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB 809 | ||
| Trail Run at Bradley Palmer SP (near Topsfield, MA). I was in the area on business, had done a bit of research beforehand and had some time to get a run in. Extensive trail network with numbered posts at almost every intersection. I had a copy of the trail map (which shows the numbers) so set up a course using trail junctions as control points. Forced me to stay focused as I ran. Trails range from single track, to grass, to old carriage roads. Area would make for interesting orienteering (sprints with all the trails?), although at this time of year parts of the woods looked pretty thick. Does NEOC still make maps? Maybe CSU?
Still very humid but about 80F, so cooler than the last few days (which has been my lame excuse for not running). AOWN - Saw two foxes hanging out atop a large dirt pile. They left pretty quickly when they spotted me. Some FDF's, but they weren't too bothersome. Score was about even, in the low single digits, although the one I caught in my mouth may have survived. Ewww.

Saturday Jul 7 | ||
| Event: Finger Lakes Rogaine | ||
| Orienteering race 5:58:00 [2] ** 14.2 mi (25:12 / mi) | ||
| spiked:11/15c shoes: NB 804 - Size 10 | ||
| Finger Lakes Rogaine - 6 hour as team "Ramble On" with Janet. Got 640 points (out of 3300) but missed two 70-pointers which we attempted, due to thick woods and flaky map in the control areas. Bailed out after about 35 minutes on the first one and had to give up on the second one to get in on time. 2nd overall, 1st mixed, but in a field on only 9 or 10 teams. Very nice rogaining weather - sunny and about 80F. Distance is estimated actual distance covered. Straightline distance was about 15km. | ||
Friday Jul 6 | ||
| Road Run 36:22 [3] 4.22 mi (8:36 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #7 | ||
| Run from my folks place in New Holland, PA. Morning run. Sunny but muggy. Mostly flat. | ||
Thursday Jul 5 | ||
| Walking (Hiking) 30:00 [1] * 1.4 mi (21:25 / mi) | ||
| Walk on nature trail at Middle Creek Wildlife Mgt Area (PA) with my 89-year-old parents. Actually took over an hour, since we went at their pace. They were quite impressive since this trail was not an improved trail, but had rocks, roots and other obstacles (including an 18" diameter log across the trail at one point). Looks like my genes say I've got a chance at competing in M90 someday. :-) | ||
Wednesday Jul 4 | ||
| Road Run 36:26 | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #7 | ||
| Run at the in-laws condo. In the morning - cool but muggy (and sprinkling a bit). One mile tempo run at 7:15 pace. | ||
Tuesday Jul 3 | ||
| Walking (Hiking) 2:00:00 [1] * 3.5 mi (34:16 / mi) | ||
| Hiking at Cape Henlopen SP (Delaware). | ||
Monday Jul 2 | ||
| Road Run 42:15 [3] * 4.34 mi (9:44 / mi) | ||
| shoes: NB878 - #7 | ||
| At the in-laws condo in southern DE. Logged as a road run, but about half was on the "natural surface" trail shown on the map of the development. It turns out that the trail is layed out but not yet developed except for some boardwalks across wet areas, so I followed stakes with surveyors tape through the woods for a while until I couldn't find any more stakes and then turned around. Woods are pretty open pines and being in Delaware, there were no hills. Ran in the morning. Sunny, low 60s and low humidity (not typical of July weather here). | ||
