Wednesday Oct 31

Road Run 31:00 3.65 mi (8:30 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
A few road intervals. 4 x 400 with 2:00 recovery. Splits: 145, 146, 142, 142. About 55F. 66N and back.

Monday Oct 29

Road Run 35:54 [3] 4.2 mi (8:33 / mi)
shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Dug out the tights and gloves but no hat yet. 41F and on the way down. 66N, Shaker Museum Rd. and back. Probably ran a bit harder than I should have, which I tend to do when it's cooler.

Saturday Oct 27

Event: WCOC DuO #3, Huntington

Orienteering race 1:07:35 [4] *** 7.1 km (9:31 / km) +140m 8:40 / km
spiked:17/21c shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Long course at CNYO event at Gilbert Lake SP (two loops/maps, basically a short orange course (2.8k) followed by a green course (4.3k)). Raining, fairly hard at times, but temperature was about 60F, so rather nice for running. Every reentrant was a stream (including lots of unmapped ones). Lost about 6 minutes total spread among 4 controls. Was slightly off on a few others but spotted the bag and corrected. Nice to get a chance to finally run on the map (it was used 3 years ago for the Halloween Howl A-meet but I was involved helping run the event and didn't compete).

Thursday Oct 25

Road Run intervals 38:43 4.6 mi (8:25 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Full Moon Road Intervals. 6 x 0.25mi with 2:00 recovery. Splits: 142, 143, 141, 142, 145, 145. Last two were slightly uphill. Up and down Rt 66.

AOWN: Several dozen Canada geese honking and flying in formation as I started. They seemed to be headed toward Canada.

Wednesday Oct 24

Road Run 28:27 [2] 3.07 mi (9:15 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
An easy run, trying not to push the pace (even though it was cool and I wanted to run faster to get warmer). 66N, Albany Tpke and back.

Monday Oct 22

Road Run 37:23 [3] 4.38 mi (8:31 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
Beautiful day, sunny and mid-70's. By the time I ran, the sun was gone (i.e. set) and it was in the upper 60's but it was still very fine. North on 66 and back. The Forerunner was in metric mode so I occupied my mind multiplying the per km pace by 8/5 and doing some base 60 math. Saw a couple of deer on the way back and was concerned that they might dart out into the road and make a car swerve into me - they ran the other way (only by chance since deer appear to be quite ignorant of the ramifications of interacting with cars).

Sunday Oct 21

Note
Quite sore today after yesterday's event. Bumps and bruises on the shins and plenty of other muscle and joint aches and pains. Good orienteering, but pretty physical stuff.

Saturday Oct 20

Event: WCOC Four Map

Orienteering race 28:32 [5] *** 3.42 km (8:21 / km)
spiked:8/9c shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Map #1 - Club Getaway. Decent run. Missed #5 by about 50 meters, but I think it was hung further down the reentrant than mapped. Probably about two minutes of total errors, mostly due to not executing cleanly. Tough to read the map printed at ~1:12500.
Orienteering race 33:32 [4] *** 4.09 km (8:12 / km)
spiked:5/5c shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Map #2 - Pond Mountain. Good run, a bit hesitant near #3 but fine otherwise. Tried to focus on reading features (the way it's supposed to be done!). Long run in to the finish (650m with ~40m of climb).
Orienteering race 42:22 [4] *** 4.3 km (9:51 / km)
spiked:2/6c shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Map #3 - Macedonia. Struggled on this one, and missed on controls 2, 3, 4, and 6. Total errors of probably about 6 minutes. Map was tough to read and I was tired from the previous two maps. Note that distance for this and the other maps is total measured by the Forerunner tough to tell what the straight line distance was since the map scale was very approximate.
Orienteering race 52:26 [2] *** 2.61 km (20:05 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Map #4 - Skiff Mountain - Night-O. Really the same map as #3, but with moonlight instead of sunlight. Got quite confused by the walls near #2 and bailed out after about 30 minutes. If the walls in the area are mapped correctly, they certainly didn't show up that way on this map printing at night. I think I was wandering around about 50 - 100 meters north of where the bag was hung. Navigated perfectly back to Peter's house. :-)

Club Getaway, long - Splits

Pond Mt., Long - Splits

Macedonia, Long - Splits

Tuesday Oct 16

Trail Run 44:40 [3] * 4.75 mi (9:24 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
Arastradero Open Space Preserve, west of Palo Alto. Trail run on paths ranging from single track to wide gravel. Almost no rocks or roots. Some hills with nice views from the high points. Upper 50's with showers threatening.

Green Day 1 - Splits

Tuesday Oct 9

Road Run 18:26 [3] 2.0 mi (9:13 / mi)
shoes: NB878 - #7
A short, easy run on the roads to see if the legs still work. Knees and lower legs a bit sore but was able to run OK. Rt 66 S and back. 58F, overcast.

Sunday Oct 7

Event: Hudson Highlander 2007

Orienteering long 6:30:35 [3] *** 31.1 km (12:34 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons 2
Hudson Highlander XII. One of the more physically and mentally challenging Highlanders. A warm day, probably reaching the upper 70's. Met the primary goal for the day, finish the race to keep the streak alive (11 so far - didn't start the first Highlander). Came very close to a second goal, avoid cramps. Only cramped once on the first leg of the second orienteering loop (just after the trail run). Mostly walked from then on, with an occasional short jog.

Had significant problems with two legs, #2 (King of the Mtn) and #11. On #2 I drifted south of the line I thought I was on and made all the features match. Ended up on the open hilltops about 500m south of the control and then headed north until I found other people searching for the control. Probably lost about 15 min. On #11 I took the more southerly route where the nice trail through the laurel shown on the map was quite overgrown. Spent much more time in the laurel than is pleasant and finally used the laurel/swamp interface to get myself out. Probably another 15 minutes lost.

At #12 hooked up with Susie Dewitt, Dave Levine, and Chris(?) and we stayed together for the rest of the race. Team orienteering certainly helped on the relatively technical last loop.

Actual orienteering distance was 24.9km (measured by J-J). I covered 31.1km as measured by the forerunner. Climb was accurately described a "loads".

Another fine Highlander put together by the HVO team. Thanks to all the volunteers who make it possible.

Thursday Oct 4

Trail Run 37:49 [3] 3.9 mi (9:42 / mi)
shoes: NB 809
At Kennedy Park (Lenox, MA). 70's and a bit muggy/ Not what I'd expect for October 4. Twenty years ago today we had a foot of (unpredicted) snow - lots of tree damage and no power for five days. I'll take today's weather. :-)

AOWN: Spotted a fisher crossing the road on my way into work. Looked like a mink, only bigger. Wouldn't want to tangle with one of these in the wild - they're one of the few animals who prey on porcupines.
